Wallace MacClean Johnston

Wallace MacClean Johnston died Monday at Meeker Nursing Center. He was 91.

He was born on August 11, 1909, in Caldwell, Kan.

He was a retired civil engineer for Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.

On May 16, 1998, he married Ola Mae Clarke in Yuma, Ariz.

No services are planned at this time.

Lavoy Baylis

Lavoy "Ruff" Baylis died Tuesday in Norman. The Hennepin, Okla., resident was 74.

He was born Dec. 2, 1926, in Maud, the son of Mack and Neoma Strickler Baylis.

Baylis attended Harjo Schools and graduated in 1947.

He married Doris Denson in 1944.

He and his wife later moved to Countyline, Okla., to work for Shell Oil Company.

Baylis played baseball for Pan American Oil Company.

He opened the Baylis Welding Shop and later owned and operated the Countyline Grocery Store until 1962. He then worked for two years for Brooks Construction. After moving to Tecumseh, he operated a restaurant. In 1965, he began working at Tinker Air Force Base and retired on Jan. 1, 1986.

On July 17, 1991, he married Linda Dickerson in Eureka Springs, Ark. They lived in Hennepin, Okla., and ranched and farmed in the Arbuckle foothills.

Survivors include his wife of the home; daughters, Sheila Jones of Oklahoma City, Diane Thomas of Commanche, Gayla Hudson of Tecumseh and Becky Reed of Duncan; son, Brad Weaver of Pooleville, Okla.; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Gaye Higdon of Shawnee.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Fox Funeral Chapel in Davis. Bro. Virgil Trout and Hurshel Baker will officiate. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Tecumseh Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Fox Funeral Home.

Gene Gray

Gene Gray, 79, died Tuesday in Shawnee.

He was born in Chandler March 28, 1921, the son of W.S. and Maggie (Wolfe) Gray. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Lucille Crail in Davenport on Sept. 2, 1941.

He worked for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority for 31 years before his retirement.

Preceding Gray in death were his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife of the home; daughters and son-in-law, Natalie Rose LaGere of Oklahoma City and Paula and Steve Lambert of Whitesboro, Texas; brother, Richard Gray of Chandler; sister, Una Herd of Chandler; a grandchild; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel in Chandler. Ron Edwards will officiate; burial will follow in Oak Park Cemetery of Chandler.

Mary Lou Allen

Mary Lou Allen, 92, died Friday in Shawnee.

She was born on April 16, 1908, in Tecumseh, the daughter of Bert and Ollie (Gerelds) Robison.

She was a graduate of Tecumseh High School.

On Feb. 26, 1928, she married Virgil Lee Allen.

She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, serving as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir.

She also was a member of the Remus Demonstration Club and was a homemaker.

Preceding her in death were her husband; parents; sister, Aletha Mae McGee; and brothers, Elburn and Lawrence Robison.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Verna Marie and Floyd Akin of Maud; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Cleta Allen of Bethel; grandchildren, Danny, Gary and Ricky Akin,Toni Batttles and Terry Walker; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ruby Allen of Moore; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel, Tecumseh. Bill Roberts will officiate. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery.

Patrick Altier

Patrick Altier of Davenport died Tuesday in Temple, Texas. He was 9 years old.

Services are pending under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service of Chandler.

Rosa Nipper

Rosa Nipper died Tuesday in a Midwest City hospital. The Earlsboro resident was 78.

She was born in Johnson Community, Okla., on Feb. 15, 1922, the daughter of Herschel D. and Leola (McAlister) Belcher.

On July 8, 1939, she married Willie Nipper.

She was a homemaker and had been a member of Fairview Baptist Church since 1945. She and her husband worked together on their family farm.

Preceding Mrs. Nipper in death were her parents, twin granddaughters, Billie Sue and Terrie Lou Bennett, and five brothers, H.D., John, Frank, Howard and David Belcher.

Survivors include her husband of Earlsboro; three daughters and sons-in-law, Zeta and Ron Carty of Earlsboro; Wynonia and Dean Bennett of Earlsboro and Zelda and Gwin Prather of Earlsboro; seven grandchildren, Cody Bennett, Lee Ann Helvey, Bobby Bennett, Rose Fulton, Mamie Shannon, Angie Price and Alan Prather; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Johnson of Shawnee; Mary Strong of Earlsboro and Dorothy Sanders of Detroit, Texas; and three sisters-in-law, Wilma Montgomery, Melba Buoy and Mabel Uldrich.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Fairview Baptist Church. The Rev. Bythel Friend will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Tim Emmons. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park; arrangements are under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.

Jackie Colleen (VanMeter) Talley

Jackie Colleen (VanMeter) Talley, 67, died Monday in her Mannford home.

She was born in Shawnee on Dec. 8, 1933, to Jack and Lena VanMeter.

Preceding her in death were her parents and one sister, JoAnn Ham.

Survivors include her children, Carol Ann Arthur and husband Dennis of Bristow; Kenny Lee Bertram and wife Sharon of Tulsa; and Dennis Keith Bertram of Broken Arrow; the father of her children, Bennie Bertram of Drumright; one sister, Linda VanMeter McAfee of Mannford; five grandchildren, Stephen Allen Smith of Bristow; James Kelly Smith of Bristow; Marion James Smith III of Sand Springs; Austin Wallace Bertram of Tulsa and Tyler Edward Bertram of Tulsa; and three great-grandchildren.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Crossroads Community Bible Church in Mannford. Pastor Kenneth C. Kern will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at the Tecumseh Mission Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Mannford Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Rosie Gaines

Rosie Gaines died Tuesday in Shawnee at the age of 65.

Services are pending under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home.

Frank W. Owens

Longtime Stroud resident Frank W. Owens, 72, died Tuesday in Oklahoma City.

He was born on Sept. 12, 1928, in Stroud. The son of Arthur and Emma (Gazelle) Owens, he was a resident of Stroud for most of his life. He was a member of the Stroud Christian Church and the Stroud American Legion. He served in the U.S. Navy and had retired from the Oklahoma Turnkpike Association.

On Dec. 11, 1949, he married Patricia Fulkerson.

Preceding Owens in death were his parents, one son, David, and three brothers.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; three sons, Buddy Owens of Oklahoma City; Rickey Owens and wife Mickey of Yukon; and Randy Owens and wife Tina of St. Paul, Minn.; one brother, R.B. Owens of Lawton; one sister, Agnes Brewer of Stroud; nine grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Stroud Christian Church. Randy Ethridge will officiate; burial will be in Stroud Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Funeral Home in Stroud.

Burnell Dewitt Harris

Former Stroud resident Burnell Dewitt Harris died Monday in Sitka, Alaska, at the age of 50.

He was born in Oklahoma City on April 10, 1950, the son of Dewitt Clinton Harris and Ella (Star) Boyd. He moved to Alaska from Stroud when he was 17 years old. He worked for the Fishing and Wildlife Department in Juneau, Alaska.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother.

Survivors include two brothers, Merle Boyd and James Star of Stroud.

Services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Sac and Fox Nation. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hunter Family Cemetery in Cushing. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Stroud.

Hazel Delma Early

Hazel Delma Early died Tuesday in Meeker at the age of 83.

She was born on Dec. 12, 1917, in Attalla, Ala., the daughter of Charley and Maybell (Thompson) Fletcher.

On May 23, 1933, she married Joseph Early. She lived in the Sparks area for several years, moving here from California. Mrs. Early was a nurse.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, one brother and one sister.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Biddles and Clifford Early, both of Sparks; and eight daughters, Francis Pettit of Tehachapi, Calif.; Barbara Anqlin of Lamont, Calif.; Joyce Turner of Sparks; Linda Watkins of Sparks; Kay Wolford of Meeker; Paula Davis of Park Hill, Okla.; Cinda Wolford of Meeker and Rosie Davis of Tahlequah.

She is also survived by two sisters, Suzie Cook of Boaz, Ala., and Betty Layfield of Attalla, Ala.; 40 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Chandler.

Louis A. Smolinski

Louis A. Smolinski of Meeker died Wednesday in Meeker. He was 84.

Services are pending with Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Vera M. Dunaway

Vera M. Dunaway of Shawnee died Wednesday at a local hospital. She was 79.

Services are pending with Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
