Ada L. Byers

Lifelong Seminole resident Ada L. Byers died Sunday at Pioneer Nursing Home. She was 89.

Byers was born Dec. 25, 1910, in Seminole County to John and Mary (Marshall) Byers. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her nephew, Jack Davis, Seminole; and sister, Molly Thomas, Bakersfield, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and five sisters.

Graveside services were Monday at Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Hester officiating.

Louellen Newberry

Former Shawnee resident Louellen Newberry died Monday in Temple, Texas. She was 88.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Further announcements will be made by Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

William J. Brown Sr.

Lifelong Shawnee resident William J. "Bill" Brown Sr. died Saturday at a local nursing home. He was 63.

He was born April 12, 1936, in Oklahoma City to Percy and Jean (McCoy) Brown.

He married DeAnn Burk April 20, 1973, in Shawnee.

Brown graduated from Shawnee High School and attended the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma Baptist University. He was retired.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and Gold Prospectors Association of America.

Survivors include his wife DeAnn Brown of the home; sons, Bill Brown Jr., Oklahoma City, and Brent Brown, Shawnee; sister, Betty Jane Maxey, Tulsa; brother, Jack Brown, Shawnee; uncle, Clarence McCoy, Wetumka; aunt, Jean McCoy, Wetumka; niece, Barbara Jane Vrana, Shawnee; nephews, Carter and Buck Maxey, Tulsa; four grand-nephews and many cousins.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with friends and family speaking. Arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Charlene Bunnell

Longtime area resident Charlene Bunnell, Choctaw, died Thursday at a Midwest City hospital. She was 55.

She was born Jan. 30, 1944, in Shawnee. She attended Shawnee and Norman schools, and graduated from East Central University. She married Warren Bunnell on July 25, 1987, at Tecumseh Church of Christ.

She taught fourth grade at Nicoma Park Intermediate School in the Choctaw/Nicoma Park School District and was named "Teacher of the Month" in 1997 and 1998.

She had taught at Nicoma Park for six years and also had taught at Macomb Schools.

She was a member of OEA/NEA and served on the ACT executive board. She was school steering committee representative for fourth grade and the North Central Accreditation Committee chair.

Mrs. Bunnell was a member of the Church of Christ at Dale.

Preceding her in death were her father, Marion Chalmers Neighbors; stepfather, Bob Richards, and grandfather, William T. Derryberry.

Survivors include her husband, Warren, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Sharla and Larry Lindley, Oklahoma City; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Leslie Duren, Del City; mother, Naomi Richards, Shawnee; stepchildren, Patricia Bunnell, Massachusetts; Richard Bunnell, Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren, Logan, Rachel, Jake and Bowen Duren, Sheridan and Cole Lindley, Jordan Bunnell; four sisters, Nancy Harris, Roberta Richards, Marty Richards, all of Shawnee; Barbara Richards-Horn, Tulsa, and brother, C.L. Richards, Tulsa.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Roesch-Walker Chapel with Dewayne Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Tribbey Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Cancer Research, 4323 NW 63, Suite 110, Oklahoma City OK 73116-1513; Feed The Children, or other charity.

Margaret E. Sumner

Shawnee homemaker Margaret E. Sumner died Thursday in a Colorado Springs, Colo., hospital. She was 83.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. Janie Kirt Morris officiating, assisted by the Rev. Arthur Scrutchins. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

She was born July 24, 1915, in Shawnee to Isiah and Hester Boyd. She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1933. She married Joel Sumner in Shawnee on Dec. 31, 1934, and was a homemaker. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Jenetta Sumner, Shawnee; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Richard Souders, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Penny and Paul Varvel, Cleveland, Okla.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Douglas, Jeff Sumner, both of Shawnee; Stephanie Kelley, Dallas, Texas; Kirsten Tullius, Tulsa; Scott Varvel, Cleveland; three great-grandchildren, and one sister, Pauline Cullen, Houston, Texas.

Memorials may be made Emmanuel Episcopal Church or to the American Heart Association.

M. Coleene Melson

Lifelong Lincoln County resident M. Coleene Melson died Friday at the age of 74.

She was born in Chandler on Jan. 30, 1925, the daughter of Bill and Mary Addie (McMurtry) Jones. She married Warren G. Melson on Sept. 3, 1949, in Chandler. She had worked as a bookkeeper.

She was a lifelong resident of Lincoln County and a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Davenport.

Preceding her in death were her parents and one brother.

She is survived by her husband, Warren Melson, Chandler; son and daughter-in-law, Warren Earl "Bud" and Tresa Melson, Burkburnett, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Jimmy Hitchcock, Chandler; daughter, Susan Savage, Edmond, and eight grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Davenport First Church of the Nazarene with Rodney Amos and Keith Cole officiating. Burial will follow at New Zion Cemetery, Chandler, under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Chandler.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation.

Ozie Mae Howell

Ozie Mae Howell, 85, Maud, died Thursday in Oklahoma City.

Mrs. Howell was born Dec. 3, 1913, in Vernon, Ala., to Thomas Yerby and Zelma Yerby. She married Dan Howell on June 14, 1946, in Gainesville, Texas.

She had lived in Seminole County for 80 years and was a homemaker. She attended Trinity Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Dan Howell, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Charles L. and Joann Posey, Seminole; three grandchildren, Brad and Phillip Posey and Laura Long; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doyle Long officiating. Burial will be in Wolf Cemetery.

Howard Belcher

Howard Belcher, 67, Durant, died Wednesday in Oklahoma City.

Belcher was born Aug. 1, 1931, in Shawnee to Hershel DeWitt and Leola (McAlister) Belcher. He married Bessie Steward Feb. 23, 1952, in Shawnee.

He was a salesman for Rainbow Bread, Cains Coffee and Frito Lay. He also worked as a car salesman for Spencer Ford and Reynolds Chevrolet. For the past five years he had worked in sales at Crossmark with his son, Greg.

He was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school director. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 162 in Guthrie where he was a 32nd degree mason.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Belcher, of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Marilyn Belcher, Tulsa; Greg and Gena Belcher, Yukon; daughter and son-in-law, Darla and Pat Peek, San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Vicki Belcher, San Antonio, Texas; twin brother, Harvey Belcher, Edmond; sisters, Rosa Nipper and Mary Strong, both of Earlsboro; Ruth Johnson, Shawnee; Dorothy Sanders, Detroit, Texas; and grandchildren, Susie Peek, San Antonio, Texas; Lindsey and Ethan Sheffield, Yukon.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, H.D., John, Frank and David Belcher.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Fairview Baptist Church, Durant, with the Rev. Terrell Suggs officiating. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. today at Resthaven Cemetery, Shawnee, under the direction of Murray Funeral Home, Durant.

Memorials may be made to the Fairview Baptist Church building fund.

Claudia Cleo Preston

Former Seminole resident Claudia Cleo Preston, Tulsa, died Friday in Mannford. She was 96.

Mrs. Preston was born April 26, 1902, in Blackwater, Ky., to Elihu and Frances Garrison. She married A.R. Preston in March of 1926.

She had lived in Seminole for 60 years and had lived in Mannford for the past 10 years. She worked as an accountant for Home Lumber Company in Seminole for more than 30 years and was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. W.O. "Fran" Wozencraft, Mannford; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one son, E.L. Preston.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home with Gordon Spencer officiating.

Lillian Alpha Jones

Maud resident Lillian Alpha Jones died Thursday at a Maud nursing home. She was 92.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Maud, with the Rev. Connie Ramsey officiating. Burial will be in Cummings Cemetery, Maud, under the direction of Knight Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jones was born Sept. 6, 1906, in Lead Hill, Ark., to Ervin C. Taylor and Sarah Taylor. She married George Harold Jones on June 24, 1923, in Meeker.

She lived in Shawnee and Sapulpa before returning to Maud in 1988. She was a homemaker and member of the First Christian Church in Sapulpa. She also was a member of the Sapulpa Garden Club and the Sapulpa Ladies Golf Association.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Lee Jones, Maud; W.D. "Buddy" and Linda Jones, Horseshoe Bay, Texas; three sisters, Vay Goodman, Paramount, Ga.; Louise Sims, Canyon, Texas; Ann Jennings, Bristow; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Harold Jones, on July 31, 1989 and her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Myrtle Iva Christenberry

Shawnee resident Myrtle Iva Christenberry died Tuesday in Shawnee. She was 77.

Mrs. Christenberry was born Oct. 5, 1921, in Kusa, Okla., to Virgie and William Townson. She married Raymond Christenberry July 8, 1940, in Henryetta.

She was a former Henryetta resident and attended the Shawnee United Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include seven daughters, Laverne Grimes, Edmond; Josy Sill, Clearview; Aleta Stanley, Mustang; Jane Camby, North Carolina; Ramona Christenberry, Shawnee; Diane Lynch, North Carolina; Deene Christenberry, Shawnee; four sons, Arlis Christenberry, Tiger Mountain; Carlos Christenberry, South Dakota; Ernie Christenberry, Edmond; Ethrie Christenberry, Paden; 23 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nellie Phipps and Laura Coon, both of California.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, on March 11, 1992; three daughters, Leveda Graham, Latha Hawkins and Iona Crim; and her son, Gary Don Christenberry.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Shurden Funeral Home Chapel, Henryetta.

Laverne Patricia Keas

Former Tribbey resident Laverne Patricia "Pat" Keas died Tuesday at her home in Bixby. She was 74.

Mrs. Keas was born March 29, 1924, in Tribbey to Morris Malcom and Elizabeth Clementine (Main) Smith. She married Fred Dallas Keas Sr., in Yuma, Ariz., on Oct. 26, 1945.

She graduated from Tribbey High School in 1942 and worked as a purchasing agent and expediter for Seiscor Technologies for 22 years. She later worked for several years as a bookkeeper and office manager for J. Carol Realtors.

She moved to Bixby in 1963 where she was a longtime member of the Downtown Church of Christ.

Survivors include her son, Fred Keas Jr. and his wife Sue Ann, Bixby; three brothers, C.C. "Doc" Smith, Noble; Leslie D. "Scooter" Smith, Tecumseh; M. Dale Smith, St. Louis; three grandchildren and their spouses, Jeffrey and Shelly Keas; Lori and Rand Smalling; Jenny and Brannon Wolfe; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Downtown Church of Christ with Bill Burton and Jim Bezler officiating. Burial will be in Floral Haven Cemetery under the direction of Leonard and Marker Funeral Home, Bixby.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; her husband on April 3, 1996; and three brothers, Doyle Venus Smith, Vearl Smith, Norman; and Veachel Smith, Noble.
