George L. Click

Former Shawnee resident George L. Click died Thursday, April 8 in Oklahoma City. He was 99.

He was born May 6, 1900, in Columbia, Tenn., to Mary (Covey) Click and John C. Click.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, Mary Click; a daughter, Audrey Richardson, and seven brothers.

He is survived by a sister, Mabel Groetecke of Shawnee, a grandson, Ralph Robison of Oklahoma City, and three great-grandchildren.

Burial was Saturday at Memorial Park in Oklahoma City. Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson officiated.

William Jefferson Latham Jr.

William Jefferson Latham Jr., Fort Lupton, Colo., died March 25 at Brighton Care Center in Brighton, Colo. He was 69.

He was born June 10, 1929, in Shawnee to William J. and Beulah (Simms) Latham Sr.

He married Irene Kieffer on Oct. 14, 1953, in Okmulgee. He attended junior high and high school in Shawnee, and attended Oklahoma Baptist University for two and one-half years.

Latham moved from Oklahoma to Sterling, Colo., in 1954. He worked all over the Rocky Mountain Region in the oil service industry. The family moved the Brighton in 1970, then to Fort Lupton in 1990.

Surviving are his wife, Irene Latham of Fort Lupton, Colo.; sons William Alan Latham of Fort Lupton and Jeffrey Lynn and Allison McCoy Latham of Denver; daughters Janet Sue and Robert Wiley of Fort Lupton and Barbara Ann and James Provancal of Aurora, Colo.; grandson Levi Alan Latham of Fort Lupton and Natalie Rose Provancal of Aurora.

Graveside services were held March 26 at Hillside Cemetery in Fort Lupton. Rice Mortuary and Crematory of Brighton handled the arrangements.

Harry Samuel Pate

Harry Samuel Pate of Cushing died Monday at Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa. He was 82.

He was born June 30, 1916, on the Indian Reservation in the Cushing area to Robert T. Pate and Rachael Nellie Hall. He was married to Martha Keller on Jan. 17, 1941, in Pratt, Kan.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans for 22 years, Chapter OK No. 32 and was also a member of the Sac and Fox Tribe. He had lived in Kansas and later moved to Oklahoma where he lived on the homestead. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He retired as an oilfield driller.

Surviving are his wife, Martha of the home; two sons, Larry and Sammy, both of Cushing; four daughters and their husbands, Carol and Jerry Childers; Brenda and Vernon Nicholas, Veronica and Jeff Myers; and Diana and Danny Hopkins, all of Cushing; one brother, Carl Butler of Cushing; two sisters, Cecila Littlehead of Shawnee and Rose Allen of Stroud; and 21 grandchildren, Jamie, Joey, Laura and Kim Pate, Randy Rowell, Sam Wright, Jimbob Story, Robbie, Samantha, Will, Holly Pate, Rachael and Martha Myers, Danielle, Danny, Dustin, Dyllon Hopkins, Denise and James Murie, Shelly and Timmy Robinson, Shawn Pratt all of Cushing and Shelia Pratt of Drumright.

Sac and Fox tribal rites will be held Wednesday at the Sac and Fox Community Center in Stroud.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Pate Family Cemetery southeast of Cushing. Full military honors will be provided by the Cushing V.F.W. Post

Services are under the direction of Palmer Funeral Home of Cushing.

James L. Smith

James L. Smith of Seminole died Sunday in a Tulsa hospital. He was 76.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel of Seminole with the Rev. Fred Morrison officiating. Burial will be at Little Cemetery.

James L. Smith was born March 11, 1923, in New Blaine, Ark., the son of Carl and Ethel (Jones) Smith. He married Wanda Williams in Seminole in 1989.

He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from the city of Oklahoma City in 1965. He moved to Seminole 13 years ago and was a member of Seminole Masonic Lodge.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his first, wife, Mary L. Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda (Williams) Smith; daughters, Pat Wright, Tulsa; Leona Rose, Ola, Ark., and three sisters, Margie Sue Dooms, Tucson, Ariz.; Betty Jones, Winsboro, Texas, and Wanda Ackerman, Hemet, Calif.

Forrest Best

Forrest "Frosty" Best, 60, Shawnee, died Sunday in a Pauls Valley hospital.

He was born Jan. 24, 1939, in Cordell, Okla., to Charley E. and Esther Josephine (Cooper) Best. He attended Northwest Classen in Oklahoma City and Oklahoma State University, Stillwater. He was an installation engineer for Central Fixtures for 15 years, a sales representative for Bassett Furniture Industries for 10 years, managed Kib Warren Furniture for seven years and retired from Marquis Furniture. He married Kay Sugg on Oct. 23, 1963, in Oklahoma City. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963, including a tour of duty in Korea. He moved to Shawnee in 1983.

He is survived by his wife of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tami and Chuck Tade, Shawnee, and Keli and Darin Atwell, Van Buren, Ark.; a son and daughter-in-law, Sean and Re Gina Best, Shawnee; six grandchildren, Stephanie Best, Lauren Tade, Garreth Atwell, Meghan Tade, Kayla Atwell & Kristen Best; brother, Glenn Best, Oklahoma City; sister, Pauletta Olea, Oklahoma City; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Ernest Strong. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Sybilla F. Derk

Shawnee resident Sybilla F. Derk died Sunday at her home. She was 76.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Derk was born May 29, 1922, in Shamokin, Pa., to George and Helen Kopper. She married Ivan Derk on July 7, 1943, in Shamokin.

She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ivan Derk, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Granville Higley, Shawnee; son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Reva Derk, Shawnee; son, David Derk, Shawnee; nine grandchildren, Robert, Steven, Billy, Gary and Gregory Derk, Iris and Jody Jones and Scott and Greg Higley; three sisters, Kathern Ginter, Midwest City; Helen Derk and Mary Kopper, both of Pennsylvania; and two brothers, George and Ted Kopper, both of Pennsylvania.

Bernis Sturgill

Shawnee resident Bernis Sturgill died Saturday at a local hospital. He was 68.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Duwayne Colvin officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Sturgill was born Aug. 29, 1930, in Delphia, Ky., to Rilye and Nora (Baker) Sturgill. He married Mary Lou Howell on April 14, 1953, in Yuma, Ariz.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and came to Oklahoma in 1959. He was an oil drilling superintendent for Bodard and Hale Drilling Company and attended Wallace Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Sturgill, of the home; daughter, Donna Williams, Shawnee; three sons, Duane Sturgill, Chantilly, Va., Austin Sturgill and James Sturgill, both of Shawnee; five brothers, James Sturgill, Middlesboro, Ky, Raleigh Sturgill and Randal Sturgill, both of Delphia, Ky., Kile Sturgill, Cumberland, Ky., and Jack Sturgill, Shawnee; sister, Maxylyn Miller, Washington; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Mary Boone Wallace

Mary Boone Wallace died Sunday in Oklahoma City. She was 81.

Mrs. Wallace was born April 16, 1917, in the Econtuschka Community, Okla., to Samuel David and Josey (Jones) Boone. She married Francis Wallace on Oct. 11, 1938, in Oklahoma City.

She was a resident of Sparks since 1970 and had also lived in Kansas and Western Oklahoma. She was a homemaker and nurse's aide at the Prague Hospital. She was a member of Deer Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Anita Wallace, Elk City, and Lowell and Kathy Wallace, Sparks; two daughters and sons-in-law, Netta and Don Hall, Prague, and Lloydene and Larry Nance, Ringwood, Okla.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on July 9, 1977, her parents, five sisters and one brother.

Services will be 10 a.m Wednesday at Deer Creek Baptist Church, Stroud, with the Rev. Ellis Risenhoover officiating. Burial will follow in the Prague Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Prague.

Chloe Miller

Chloe Miller of Konawa died Saturday at the age of 88.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church of Konawa with the Rev. Herb Prater officiating. Burial will be at Vamoosa Cemetery under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home of Konawa.

She was born Friday, July 22, 1910, in Arkansas to Janie and Elisha Bowerman. She married Lloyd Henry Miller at Konawa on Aug. 22, 1927, and was a homemaker and mother. She lived in the Konawa area most of her life.

Preceding her in death were her husband; two sons, Lloyd E. Miller, who was killed in the Korean conflict in 1951, and Doyle D. Miller; one granddaughter; and one grandson.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and James S. Tatum, Konawa, and an aunt, Effie Walker, Konawa.

Minnie P. Banks

Minnie P. Banks of Chandler, died Saturday at Shawnee Regional Hospital. She was 66.

She was born Nov. 7, 1932, in Garden City, Kan. to James and Mary (Marshall) Cramer. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband, Tom Banks of Chandler; two sons, Dan of Fort Smith, Ark., and Tommy of Iowa; a step-daughter, Diana Lee Clark of Chandler; two sisters, Clara Sikes of McLoud and Donna Allen of Oilton, Okla., and nine surviving brothers.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at the New Zion Cemetery, southeast of Chandler.

Arrangements are under the direction of Asa Smith Funeral Service.

Mary Lois Donaghe

Mary Lois Donaghe died Sunday at Seminole Hospital. She was 82.

She was born April 2, 1917, in Hoyt, Okla., to Charles and Margaret Taylor. On Aug. 28, 1938, she married Otto Doyle Donaghe in Stigler. She retired from the Dollar General Store, where she had been the manager for 18 years.

She moved to Okemah from Wagner in 1950 and was a member of the Okemah First Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Doyle Donaghe of the home in Okemah; and two sons, Charles Donaghe of Duncan and Mike Donaghe of Portales, N.M.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Townley officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home.

Carl F. West

Carl F. West, 88, Shawnee, died Saturday in a local hospital.

He was born Nov. 30, 1910, in Francis, Okla., to Ed and Pearl West. He grew up there and married Marie Prince on Dec. 24, 1931, and after her death in 1984, he married Daisy Pantlick on Aug. 1, 1987. He moved to Shawnee in 1967. He was a retired railroad fireperson and cattle rancher and a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of the home; son and daughter-in-law Terry and Terri West, Shawnee; two grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Brad and Diane West and Bart and Becky West, all of Shawnee; two granddaughters, Sabrina West of Tulsa and Brigette West of Dallas, Texas; one great-granddaughter, Delaney West of Shawnee; three sisters, Evelyn Chism and Bertha Bell, both of Tulsa, and Angeline Brown, Francis; five step-children, all of California; brother, Melvin West, Stillwell; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, sister, Doris Arthur, and brother, Louis West.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Liberty Baptist Church, 711 E. Federal, with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Court-Appointed Special Advocates at 326 W. 11th, Shawnee, OK 74801.

Elizabeth E. Newell

Lifelong Shawnee resident Elizabeth E. Newell died Sunday at a local nursing home. She was 92.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel with Truman Teel, Gary Jones and Ray Newell officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Mrs. Newell was born March 8, 1907, in Shawnee, Indian Territory to Daniel Moore and Flora Anna Allison Sealock. She married Joe Newell in Shawnee on Jan. 17, 1927.

She attended Shawnee Schools and was a homemaker. She was a member of Walnut Street Church of Christ in Seminole.

Survivors include, sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and JoAnn Newell, Shawnee, and Harold and Rhoda Newell, Wheatridge, Colo.; daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores and Bill Denson, Earlsboro, and Anne and Steve Haskew, Lyons, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lillian Norman, Shawnee; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter-in-law, Kaye Newell; two brothers, three sisters and her parents.
