Mellie V. Murphy

Mellie V. Murphy, 90, Shawnee, died Sunday in Shawnee.

She was born in Tecumseh on Sept. 13, 1910. A lifelong Oklahoma resident, she was the daughter of Charles Henry and Mattie Lavina (Woffard) Murphy. She had lived in Tecumseh since 1941 until recently moving to Shawnee.

Mrs. Murphy worked on the family farm for many years. After moving to Tecumseh, she worked for Copeland Laundry. She was later employed by Gilbert Trucking, retiring in 1992.

She volunteered at the Tecumseh Golden Age Center for many years.

Preceding her in death were her parents; brother, Eber Murphy, and sisters, Annabell Hallmark and Margaret McBee.

Survivors include many nephews and nieces including Virgil and Moreene Murphy of Tecumseh; Melvin and Sandy McBee of Austin, Texas; Linda and Bob Lynn of Bethel; Virginia and James Woods of Midwest City; Matt and Debbie McBee of Midwest City; Amber Lynn of Bedford, Texas; Curtis Lynn of Bethel Acres; Kyle and Kelley McBee of Midwest City; Nina Elston of Sealey, Texas; Alma Fay and Billy Moon of Stephenville, Texas; Evert Hallmark of Stephenville, Texas; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hallmark of Azel, Texas; Roland and Louise McBee of Houston, Texas; John and Mary McBee; Dale Hallmark of Fort Worth, Texas, and Wanda McShane of Houston, Texas.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Home. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Edmond, 101 E. Hurd, Suite F, Edmond OK 73034.

Angel Deann Carter

Shawnee resident Angel Deann Carter died Wednesday in an Oklahoma City hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7. Further information is pending under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.

Peggy Jane Cox

Peggy Jane Cox, 71, Shawnee, died Wednesday in a local hospital.

She was born June 11, 1929, in Wewoka to William Ellis and Alta Ola (Jones) Hilburn. She graduated from Mountain View High School.

On May 13, 1948, she married Luster Glenn Cox in Hobart. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Cox had lived in Shawnee since 1954.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents and two brothers.

Survivors include son, Larry Michael Cox of McLoud; daughters and son-in-law, Patricia Ann Kelley of Shawnee and Connie Yvonne and Robert York of Norman; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Velta Hilburn of Moore; Carl and Pat Hilburn of Meeker; Earl and June Hilburn of Stroud, and Roy Lee and Bobbi Hilburn of Bristow; sisters, Gloria Johnson of Carmichael, Calif.; Helen Ritchie of El Reno, and Gladys Zacharias of Gotebo; two grandchildren, Shelley Raney and husband Curtis and Michael Glenn Kelley; one great-grandson and many other relatives.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Larry Sparks will officiate. Burial will be in Lexington Cemetery.

Elsie Mae Wilson

Elsie Mae Wilson died Friday at the age of 77.

She was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Hugo. The daughter of James and Mary Gardner, she was the youngest of five children.

She married Sylvester Carey. The couple had one son, Sylvester Carey Jr. Both her first husband and son preceded her in death. She later married Oliver Wilson, who also preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church in Hugo and the Galilee Baptist Church of Shawnee.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Jackie L. Carey; a niece whom she helped to raise, Gloria Davis; niece, Sherbie Kiff McDonald, and nephew, Larry Davis of Shawnee. She is also survived by a granddaughter whom she helped raise, Deborah Watson; granddaughter, Sylvia Carey Willis; grandson, Sylvester James Carey; sister, Rosie Hollis, and many other relatives.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Divine Guidance Assembly of Faith, Oklahoma City. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The arrangements are under the direction of Howard-Harris Funeral Services.

Richard Dean Harjo

Okfuskee County resident Richard Dean Harjo died Tuesday in Okemah. He was 49.

Harjo was born Sept. 13, 1951, in Okemah to Newman and Odie (Wesley) Harjo. He was a member of Greenleaf Baptist Church.

He was an artist and a lifelong resident of Okfuskee County.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie Harjo, and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Newman Harjo of Holdenville and Edward and Patricia Harjo of Okemah.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenleaf Baptist Church with Judson Deere and Fred Lindsey officiating. Burial will be in Quasada Family Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah.

Ettie E. Nelson

Tecumseh resident Ettie E. Nelson, 80, died Monday in Oklahoma City.

She was born Aug. 2, 1920, in Casa Grande, Ariz. The daughter of Chester Harvey and Stella Marie (Choate) Babbit graduated from Harrah High School. She had lived in the McLoud and Tecumseh areas for the majority of her life.

Mrs. Nelson worked as a sales associate for Montgomery Wards for many years. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Preceding her in death were her parents and four brothers.

Survivors include her daughter, Eveline Kennedy of Paradise, Texas; son, Bobbie Nelson of Stratford; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and brothers, Earl Babbit of Norman and Harvey Babbit of Oklahoma City.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Forest Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Kay Karen Kennedy will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home.

Lois E. Boring

Tecumseh resident Lois E. Boring died Friday in Shawnee. She was 76.

She was born Nov. 2, 1923, in Watson, Okla., to Tom and Roxie (Lawrence) Tate.

She married Jess Boring May 6, 1950, in Shawnee. He preceded her in death Aug. 27, 1995.

She graduated from St. Louis High School. Mrs. Boring was raised in St. Louis and moved to Tecumseh following her high school graduation. She lived in Tecumseh most of her adult life.

She was a legal secretary for many years and a seamstress. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Steven Boring; sister, Rose Huff; and two brothers, Ed Tate and Dave Tate.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Will and Sheila Boring, Tecumseh; sister, Bertha Owens, LaPine, Ore.; grandchildren, Andrew Boring, Edward Boring, Amanda Boring, Jonathan Burns, Kristen Burns and Alec Boring; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Tecumseh Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Rider officiating under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.

James Woodrow Cunningham

James Woodrow "Woody" Cunningham of Norman died Thursday. He was 84.

He was born Sept. 24, 1915, at Locust Grove, the son of Irvin Ernest and Martha Viola Roberts Cunningham.

He came to Norman in 1989 from Fairfield, Calif. Cunningham was a retired diesel mechanic working in construction.

He married Alice Onie Wade on Sept. 10, 1989, in Ada. Cunningham attended church at Lakeside Church of God in Norman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife, Alice Viola Cunningham; two sons, infant James Woodrow Cunningham Jr. and Randy Lee Cunningham; two daughters, Delores Hall and Eileen McCauley; a brother, Clarence D. Cunningham; and a brother-in-law, Vick Forister.

Survivors include his wife Alice of the home in Norman; one son, Vernon Lowayne Cunningham and his wife Sharon of Edmond; five daughters, Mary Hayes and her husband Tom of Ada; Shirley Anderson of Shawnee; Cathy Forister, Jequita Raffety and Jeannie Barrett and her husband Rick, all of Norman; four sisters, Faye Ella Fryer and her husband, Charles, Flossie Irene Wiseley and her husband Jess, Geraldine Campbell, and Mary Jane Speck and her husband Willard; two brothers, Irvin K. Cunningham and Herman Joe Cunningham and his wife Patty; 21 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel at Davenport Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Adams officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home.

Charles Donald Forrester

Charles Donald "Don" Forrester of Shawnee died Monday. He was 63.

He was born Dec. 15, 1936, in Shawnee, the son of G. Glynn and Margaret (Parchman) Forrester.

Forrester retired after 35 years of service with the Federal Aviation Administration. He married Margaret Sebastian in 1958 in Shawnee.

He served in the 101st Airborne Division from January 1954 through January 1957. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a member of the A.A.R.P.

Forrester was a longtime resident of Shawnee and lived 35 years in Bethel.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Terry Van Forrester.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Forrester of Shawnee; two sons, Thomas Forrester, Sacramento, Calif.; Curtis Fields, Porum; daughter, Toni Forrester, Tulsa; two grandsons and one granddaughter, a sister, Wanda Wray, Elk City; brother and sister-in-law, Glynn and Joan Forrester, Melbourne, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel with Mrs. Jack Morris officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Opal Helen Cotner

Opal Helen Cotner of Konawa died Thursday in Ada. She was 84.

She was born Oct. 19, 1915, in Bristow to Nola (Fletcher) and Charles E. Pendegrass. She was married to Michael A. Cotner at Bristow on Sept. 25, 1933.

She was a homemaker who lived in Konawa for the past 30 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Konawa and a member of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by one son, Michael R. Cotner; her parents; one sister, Ida Ellen Brownlee; and two brothers, Charles T. Pendegrass and Elmo Pendegrass.

Survivors include her husband, Michael A. Cotner, of the home; one daughter, Betty Belk, Brandon, Miss.; two brothers, Don Pendegrass, Lawton; John Pendegrass, Pittsburgh, Calif.; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and many friends and loved ones.

Services will be 10:30 Monday at the Pickard Funeral Home Chapel in Konawa. Burial will follow at Konawa Cemetery.

Jimmie Otis Colquitt

Jimmie Otis Colquitt of Asher died Friday. He was 44.

He was born April 17, 1955, in Talihina to Morine (Underwood) and James H. Colquitt. He lived in Asher for the past 13 years.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents, W.N. Colquitt and Oakley Colquitt.

Survivors include his mother, Morine Colquitt, of Asher; two sons, James Otis Colquitt and Jimmy Clint Colquitt; two daughters, Charlotte Larney and Latina Larney; one sister, Connie Sue Colquitt; two brothers, William Norman Colquitt and Charlie Clint Kirkley; and many other family and friends.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Pickard Funeral Home Chapel in Konawa.
