Ruth Oimoen
Ruth Oimoen, long time resident of Ashland, died early Saturday morning at Count Your Blessings, a Medford foster care home, from long term Alzheimer's complications. During her last days, she was lovingly surrounded by family members and caregivers who played and sang her favorite hymns. Her love for music and crafts were an integral part of her being throughout her life. Her 94th birthday was on May 27.

She and her deceased husband, Casper Oimoen, observed their 65th wedding anniversary prior to his death in 1995. The Oimoens resided in Ashland for 30 years, during which time they enjoyed celebrating many milestones with their daughter Sonja's family: Lesa, Theron, Nada and Gary Afseth. They were active members of the Ashland Presbyterian Church and the Rogue Valley Scandia Club. In 1993 they sold their Ashland home and moved to a retirement home in Portland.

Ruth returned to the Rogue Valley following Casper's death in Portland to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Sonja and Larry Stalions who live in Medford. She suffered from Alzheimer's complications for the past 12 years. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law Sonja and Larry Stalions; grandchildren: Mike and Lesa Wooton of Newberg; John and Nada Gross of Salem and Theron and Kim Afseth of Mt. Shasta, CA; great grandchildren: Lindsey, Christina, Mikayla and Natalie Wooton, Skylar Gross; and Haley and Makila Puikunas; and a sister, Docela DeBerry of Redding; CA. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Delores; her parents, William and Pearl Edwards; a sister, Wilma St. John; and a brother, Lyle Edwards.

She was born in Martin, ND. Ruth received a teaching certificate from Minot Normal Teachers' College, Minot, ND, in 1928, and taught in a rural school for one year near Velva, ND. Ruth and Casper married in Minot, on December 30, 1929, and traveled extensively to ski jumping tournaments throughout the United States where Casper garnered the United States Ski Jumping Championships in 1930, 1931 and 1933.

With the birth of their first child, Delores Jean, they settled in Minot, moving to Anaconda, MT, at the height of the Great Depression in 1934. The family returned to Minot following the war, and Ruth was the main caregiver during Delores' nine-year illness prior to her death in 1953.

Ruth was involved in the Minot First Presbyterian Church's Women's Association, serving as president and representative to a leadership conference at Purdue University held in 1961.

She was also a Girl Scout leader and active in PTA.

The Oimoens moved to Ashland in 1964 for their retirement years, during which time they traveled twice to Norway, Casper's native land. After their first trip, Ruth made Norwegian folk outfits called bunads for her grandchildren, embroidering the traditional flower patterns on each of them. She was skilled in all areas of needlework, with crochet being her favorite. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed being a hostess.

Harpist Laurie Hunter will play at a gathering later this summer at which time a rosebush will be planted in Ruth's memory on the grounds of Ashland's First Presbyterian Church. Those interested in attending may call 857-9394 for further information. Her ashes will be buried in the Oimoen family plot in Minot, ND, with Memory Gardens of Medford in charge of the cremation.

Barbara Wight died in her home from cancer on June 30, 2004. She was born October 25, 1920 in Van Nuys, California, the third of six children born to Otto Oltmann and his wife Ettie Longfellow. Barbara played piano and loved music from her earliest years, serving as accompanist in church and for the Van Nuys chapter of Job's Daughters. She graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1938, and after America entered World War II she moved to San Diego - working the swing shift for Consolidated Aircraft and its B-24s. Barbara worked there two years and was present in January 1942 when the camouflage netting went up, still fearing a West Coast invasion. In 1944 she settled in San Jose, again holding a series of jobs and volunteering in the local USO Club.

After the war she attended San Jose State starting in 1946 and met her future husband during a holiday party around Christmas 1947. They married in March 1948, and settled in the Bay area for the next decade. David became a public school music teacher, and she again held a series of jobs outside the home. Barbara and Dave enjoyed season tickets to the San Francisco Symphony, attended many chamber music and jazz concerts, as Dave also played many jobs as a jazz musician.

In 1961 the Wights moved to the Rogue Valley. Barbara worked for Emerald Music in Medford, then as Secretary at both Ashland Junior High (1963-64) and the English Department as Ashland High School (1965-79). During these years she also served as on-call piano accompanist for Junior and Senior High students in the regional music competitions. After retiring from Ashland High in 1979, she worked for the Medford Public Schools 1980-86, and then did office work for psychologist Mike Knapp 1987-2003. She was still hoping to return to that position later in 2004, after several illnesses.

Barbara became a major supporter of local concerts- jazz, pop, classical, band and choral, throughout her forty years in the Rogue Valley. She attended City Band concerts every year, and served as both music librarian and payroll officer when her husband was City Band conductor from 1968-76. She was on the original board for the Traditional Jazz Concerts which started in 1980, and she served that organization in various other capacities until 1989. Barbara and Dave were among the earliest subscribers to the Chamber Music concert series which began at SOU in 1985, seats which they held until their deaths. She also loved choral music, and attended many concerts of the Southern Oregon Repertory Singers. She volunteered on local election boards many years.

Barbara studied biology at San Jose State, and enjoyed a lifelong fascination for nature. She loved to camp and travel to scenic natural wonders, planted gardens throughout her life, and always had plants and flowers in the home. Her other hobbies included a love of all card games, especially Bridge. And she loved all the fine arts, not just music- traveling twice to Europe (in 1980 and 2000) for the art, architecture and sculpture.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband David (1999), and all her siblings (sisters Dora Place and Mary Ellen Carter, brothers Bud, Bill and John Oltmann). She is survived by her son Ed. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the American Cancer Society. Retiring from the university did not mean leaving teaching. Together with his wife, Dr. Barbara Rosen, he led popular classes for Connecticut Learning in Retirement and, after moving to Ashland in 2003, for Southern Oregon Learning in Retirement, completing a course on Hamlet and King Lear just weeks before his death.

Bill was the author of Shakespeare and the Craft of Tragedy (Harvard University Press), co-editor with Barbara of the Signet edition of Julius Caesar, and a contributor to professional journals, panels and conferences on Shakespeare.

Active in the university and community at large, Bill was president of the local American Association of University Professors when it won the right to represent UConn faculty in 1975, and he led negotiations for the first faculty contract the following year. From 1994-2003, he served as a volunteer ombudsman at the Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation and from 1995-99 as a member of the Mansfield Commission on Aging. He was an active and creative member of the Mansfield Town Council from 1999-2003, taking particular pride in facilitating the development of a town community center.

Bill lived his life with a sense of obligation and delight, expressed in his favorite Old Country phrase: 'To give back what you take from the world is good; to give back a little more is better.'
