George H. (Bud) Jess, Jr.
Eagle Point rancher George H. (Bud) Jess, Jr. died April 5, 2005 at his Agate Road home after a three month battle with pneumonia. He was 81 years young.

He was born March 19, 1924 to George H. and Mary Elizabeth Lane Jess in San Francisco, California.

The early generation of the Jess family were settlers in the Jess Valley near Likely, California. Bud attended parochial and public schools in California and graduated from Beverly Hills High School. He attended UCLA and graduated from Stanford University. At UCLA he attended the Navy Officers Candidate School as a commissioned Ensign in the Navy Reserves. He was called to active duty in 1945 and became Executive Officer and Navigator of the newly launched Landing Ship Tank (LST 973). The ship ferried personnel and equipment in the West Pacific, primarily in the Philippines during World War II. The ship made a port of call in Japan shortly after the signing of the Armistice.

After active duty Bud completed his degree at Stanford University and was then employed by Pacific Bell in San Francisco. His parents were in poor health and it was decided the family would move out of the Bay Area. After a search for the desirable site he and his brother Bill chose the Rogue River site near Dodge Bridge. The Jess family moved to the Rogue Valley from Atherton, California in 1952. His parents had planned to live at Medford Towers and for the brothers to reside at the ranch, but their mother died unexpectedly so their father moved to the ranch with his sons and lived there until his death.

The ranch required a great deal of work to increase the area under irrigation. Damaging floods required stream bank protection, so the Jess Brothers became involved with soil conservation and were prime movers in the organization of the Rogue Basin Flood Control Association. Bud also became active in the Livestock Association. As more of his brother. Bill's time was required for the Rogue Basin efforts, more responsibility in operating the ranch was directed to Bud and he became the full time operator. Bud continued to live on and operate the ranch until his death. He was predeceased by his brother William Lane Jess.

Bud never married , but is survived by cousins, his "Dear Lady Friends", numerous other friends, and his dog, "Tom". He will be greatly missed by his many cousins in the Bay area, his cousin Connie Camey in Brookings, Oregon, and his neighbors and friends. He and Bill were heroes to a generation of WWII children. All their work at the ranch and their unfaltering efforts of flood control was admired by most everyone who knew them. Bud's loving character, beautiful smile, dry sense of humor, his concern for wildlife, domestic animals and the environment will be held in our hearts forever. His ready laugh now rings in our memories.

His cousins would like to thank all of his "Family of Friends" who have so lovingly played a large part in his life. He was truly blessed by their love and care.

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 at the National cemetery in Eagle Point.
