Mabel V. Richards
The life of Mabel Richards will be celebrated by her family at 10 a.m. today, Friday, Oct. 28, 2005 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Medford. Rev. Elliott Lovelace of the Talent Bible Chapel will officiate.

Mrs. Richards died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, at the age of 94.

She was born Mabel Vera Ryker on July 8, 1911 in Maud, OK, to John P. Morris and Lenora Pearl Swarb Ryker. She attended schools in Harjo, OK., before meeting and marrying Victor Wayne Richards on March 17, 1928. They raised five children and followed them west, first to the San Joaquin Valley in California in 1955, then to Ashland, Oregon, in 1968.

"Granny, " as we all knew her, loved to grow vegetables and put them into jars. She cooked big pots of beans and baked her own bread in case someone stopped by. She was as comfortable with a fishing rod as she was with a sewing machine, and she spent much of her life helping her 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren learn to cook and quilt and create whatever they envisioned or needed for a school project.

After Grandpa died in 1978, Granny moved to Talent where she volunteered with a senior women's group at the Methodist Church, and attended Talent Bible Chapel.

She played cards, watched soap operas, organized craft fairs and potlucks, and taught herself to paint landscapes at the age of 75.

Her family will miss her laugh, her love and her ability to do anything. Her five children and their spouses still live in the Rogue Valley, Thurmon and Virginia Richards of Medford, Betty Winningham of Central Point, Marie and Dick Martin of Talent, Tom and Patty Richards of Central Point, and Johnnie and Janice Richards of Medford. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Annie and Molly Richards; and a brother, Loren Ryker. Contributions may be made in her name to the charity of your choice.
