LILLIAN ROBERTS BURNHAM

Lillian Esther Roberts Burnham, age 81, passed away April 8, 2001, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

She was born Feb. 8, 1920 in Enterprise, the daughter of Everett and Esther Roberts. She was previously married to William E. (Ted) Crossen, and later married Alan H. Burnham in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Lillian was raised in Enterprise and resided in Salt Lake since 1958. She worked for First Security Bank for over 26 years. Lillian was an avid bowler and belonged to the Bankerettes, Ball & Chain and a senior's league.

Lillian is survived by her sons Henry E. and James D. Crossen and daughter-in-law Judith C. Crossen of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughters Dawn M. Hales and Erin Marilee Nash of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren, Joni L. Hales, Tobin E. and Henry V. Crossen, Bryan K. Nash, Rowan L. Armbruster, and Dorothy C. Stott; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Charles Roberts; and two sisters, Mary Lee Farnsworth and Helen Windsor of Enterprise. She was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey F. Crossen; one grandchild, Melanie Ann Hales; five sisters, Bessie Stickney, Marie O'Malley, Lydia Humphreys, Agnes Peterson and June Marks; and one brother, Ivan Roberts.

Funeral services were held April 11, 2001, at the Enterprise Community Church jointly with her recently deceased brother, Ivan. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Diabetes Foundation or the American Lung Association.

PEARL SASSER

Wallowa County native Pearl Ruby Sasser, 92, of Mt. Angel, passed away April 5, 2001.

She was born Aug. 12, 1908 in Paradise in Wallowa County to James and May (Beeman) Winters. She married Wesley J. Sasser in 1924, and he preceded her in death in 1967.

She is survived by brothers Buck, Virgil, and Percy Winters, and sisters Bessie Flesher, Alta Anderson, Wilma Tippett, Rena Clark, and Bertha Prince, eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, April 14, at 1 p.m. at the Bollman Funeral Home in Enterprise. The family suggests donations to the charity of choice in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.

LOIS MAKIN

Lois Jean Makin, 73, died at her home in Scappoose. She was born Oct. 22, 1927, in Klamath Falls to Robert and Nelda (Humphreys) Risley. She married Lyle Makin in 1949, and they lived in College Place, Washington, area for 24 years and the last 19 years in Scappoose. She enjoyed bowling, sewing, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband Lyle of Scappoose, children; Patricia Wordell of Clarkston, WA, Mike Carey of Milwaukie, Deana Thomas of Beaverton, John Makin of Canby, Kathy O'Connor of Oregon City, Shelly Brown of Gladstone; sister, Beverly Cada of Deer Island, 13 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 12, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Colombia Funeral Home in St. Helens, with committal and vault interment at Columbia Memorial Gardens cemetery in Scappoose. Memorial contributions may be made to the Legacy Hospice.

HARRISON LARE

Harrison Earl Lare, 86, of La Grande and formerly of Union, died April 3, 2001, in La Grande.

Mr. Lared was born Jan. 1, 1915, in Kirwin, Kansas, to Daniel Abraham and Alpher Etta Vest Lare. He was raised and attended elementary school in Kirwin until 1926, when he moved with his family to Wallowa.

They lived with his grandmother, Ellen Mollissia Vest, for two years until moving to their own home. In 1934 Harrison moved to Milton-Freewater with his mother and stepfather. In 1935 Harrison married Bernice June Roff in Pomeroy, WA, and they had one son Gayle.

In 1937, Harrison and Bernice were divorced, and he moved to Pineridge for a short time before returning to Milton-Freewater. He married Marie Miller in 1940 in Walla Walla and they had a daughter, Sandra. Marie preceded him in death in 1995 after 55 years of marriage.

Harrison lived in Mowich and Gilchrist, and then back to Walla Walla. He worked for sawmills, as a mechanic, and later drove caterpillar and built roads until his retirement in 1977, when he and Marie moved to Union.

Harrison enjoyed tying flies, fishing, gardening, working with electronics and traveling.

Survivors include a son, Gayle Ramey and his wife Marianne of Temecula, CA; daughter, Sandra Davis of La Grande; grandchildren, Jeffrey Davis and Debra Davis, both of La Grande; great-granddaughter, Breanna Marie Davis of La Grande; nieces Ida Mae Wheeler of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Ethel Leona Gilliam of Davenport, WA; nephews, Richard Wheeler of Milton-Freewater, Daniel Wheeler of Coos Bay, Raymond Bovent of Creston, WA, Roland Bovent of NJ and Archie Gilliam of Bellevue, Washington, close cousin, Helen Brown of La Grande; his bird, Shorty; as well as other cousins and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lydia Lola Wheeler in 1987, Eve Illene Gilliam in 1987, and infant sister Celia Amelia Lare in 1927, and a niece, Virginia E. Bovent in 1963.

Memorial contributions may be made to Home Health and hospice or to a favorite charity in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 4th Street, La Grande, OR 97850.

ROSE ISLEY

Rose Marie Isley, 66, of Hermiston died April 3, 2001.

Rose was born April 4, 1934, in Enterprise to Ward and Tilly Pratt Davis. On June 14, 1952, she married Madison Isley of Joseph. She spent many years of employment working with youth and was a foster parent for several years. Rose lived in the Salem/Stayton area from the 1960s to 1990s. She worked for Hillcrest School for Girls, and state and county youth and foster parent programs. She enjoyed knitting, camping and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her husband, Madison; daughter, Wanda Daimler of Salem; son, Les of Pendleton; brothers, Dewey Davis of Las Cruces, N.M., and Don Perry of Graham, WA; sisters, Florence Bex of Marysville, WA, and Dorthy Kidwell of La Grande; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Grace Baptist Church, in Hermiston. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

DAVID CALHOUN

David V. Calhoun, 79, passed away in Wallowa on April 6, 2001, after an extended illness.

He was a distinguished veteran of World War II, serving mostly in the Philippines.

After his discharge, he married Freda M. Stephenson. He was a truck driver for most of his life and in the 1970s he and Freda owned a tavern in Ellensburg, Washington. They moved to Oregon in 1984, and in 1986 they managed the Mt. View Motel in Joseph for about two years, before retirement.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Freda in 1997, and his parents Jesse and Lucy Calhoun.

Survivors include four children, Iva Lou Johnson of Joseph, Patty Davis of Wallowa, Mike Calhoun of Walla Walla, WA, and Lonnie Calhoun of Selah, WA, and their spouses; four grandchildren, Jamie Calhoun, Trina Lepper, Darcy Johnson, and Ryan Johnson; one great- grandchild, Jeffrey Blaze Lepper; three sisters, Gerry Wells, Adeline Loft, and Betty Owens; one brother Charles Calhoun; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be conducted at the VFW in Enterprise on Monday April 16, 2001, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local food bank or your favorite charity.

Helen Hopkins

A Celebration of Life service will be held for Helen Hopkins at the Enterprise Catholic cemetery on Saturday April 14, 2001 at 11 a.m. Helen died December 1, 2000.

Anna Brennan

Anna Rebecca Brennan, 93, of DeMoines, WA, passed away April 12, 2001, at the Judson Park Retirement and Care Center where she had resided since 1992.

Anna was born November 23, 1907, at Edmond, Okla. to Daniel B. and Charlotte Collinsworth. In 1923 she moved with her family to Enterprise where she graduated from Enterprise High School in 1926. She continued to live in Enterprise until her marriage to David J. Brennan of Portland in 1937. David and Anna lived and raised their family in Portland and after David's retirement they moved to Bend.

She is survived by her son David, Jr. and wife Kay, daughters Janice, Delores and husband Donald Hayward and granddaughter Annie, all of Seattle; daughter Rosalie and husband Thomas Fogarty, grandsons Thomas, Jr., Patrick and Jon, granddaughter Heather and husband Santiago Mendez, all of California, sister-in-law Pearl Collinsworth of Enterprise, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, David; a daughter, Diane; sisters Marge, Mary and Lil; and brothers Roy, Bill, Ern, Art and Cliff.

Private interment was at Lincoln Memorial cemetery in Portland.

Edward Snodderly

Edward William Snodderly, 97, of Pendleton, died Wednesday, April 25, at St. Anthony Hospital.

Mr. Snodderly was born Jan. 19, 1904, in Pomeroy, WA, to Carrie and Frank W. Snodderly. His father died when Edward (he liked to be called Eddie) was a young man, and thanks to his uncle taking in the family, they were able to survive.

He married Clara Lynch in 1926 and divorced in later years. He then married Doris E. Hutton on Nov. 24, 1952.

Edward's first job was sewing sacks together He then began farming land using 30 horses until modern machinery was introduced. He had farm land in Pomeroy and in Wallowa County. In the depression years, he had a good year farming and became a fairly rich man. He married Doris E. Hutton in 1952, and continued farming until they moved to California. There he worked at Northrop building parts for 747 airplanes. Edward retired in 1967 and lived in Lostine until 1973, when he moved to Pendleton. In the 97 years he lived, he accomplished much with a ninth grade education.

Survivors include his wife Doris; three daughters, Pamela Snodderly Patnode of Pendleton, Lorna Greeley of Aurora and Diana Sweek of Prairie City; four sons, Laddie Snodderly and Tim Snodderly both of Aurora, David Snodderly of Rose City, Calif., and Terry Snodderly of Newport; two stepdaughters, Bernice Lathrop of Wallowa and Donna Roberts of Las Vegas, Nev.; 25 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and two brothers, Albert Snodderly of Spokane, WA, and Charlie Snodderly of Clarkston, Washington.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Snodderly and John Snodderly; one sister, Nellie Weimer; one son, Edgar Snodderly; and two stepdaughters, Shirley Ann Wheeler and Carolyn Patterson.

Services were held April 28, 2001, at Victory Christian Church, with interment at Olney cemetery in Pendleton. Burns Mortuary of Pendleton was in charge of arrangements.

Izora Hall

Izora Gregory Hall, age 96, formerly of Enterprise and La Grande, died on Dec. 19, 2000, in Santa Barbara, Calif. Services were held Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Daniels Chapel of the Valley in La Grande.

Mrs. Hall was born on Oct. 3, 1904, near Elgin, the first child of J. Frank and Tennessee Allen Gregory. She grew up on Smith Mountain near Wallowa.

After graduating from Wallowa High School she taught for three years in rural Wallowa County schools. She then attended Oregon Normal School in Monmouth and received a normal school degree. She taught junior high English in coastal Oregon towns, and completed her college by attending summer schools.

In 1949, she married Wade B. Hall of Wallowa who worked for the U.S. Forest Service. They lived in Enterprise from 1950-1954, and Mrs. Hall taught high school English there. In 1954 they moved to Baker City and to La Grande in 1992. Wade preceded her in death in 1993, and she moved to Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1997.

Survivors include her stepdaughter, Diane Hall Jackson of Santa Barbara, CA; niece Beverly Johnson Kane of Boise, Idaho, and Donnajean Carla Gregory of Milwaukie, and the family of her deceased nephew, Greg Johnson and other relatives and friends.

Those who wish may make contributions in memory of Mrs. Hall to the Baker County Library Foundation, the Wallowa County Health Care Foundation or local charities of choice in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande OR 97850.

Verlyn Lindsley

Verlyn (Vert) Lindsley, passed away April 16, 2001, in Long Beach, Washington.

Vert was born in Cadillac, Mich., on Dec. 8, 1935. He grew up and went to school in Long Beach, Washington. Throughout the years he made his home in Enterprise and California and then moved back to Enterprise.

His greatest love was the outdoors, and fishing and hunting in Enterprise were his favorite pastimes. He attended the Eagle Cap Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include his wife Jenny, Long Beach, WA; son David of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters Connie of California and Debbie of Idaho; four brothers, Gordon of Pasco, WA, Stan and Clayton, both of Long Beach, WA, and Leonard of Enterprise; three sisters, June Priest of Vancouver, WA, Arvilla Kleve of Newberg, and Winnie Zollman of Enterprise. He was preceded in death by a son, Carl.

JOANN JOYCE

JoAnn Joyce, 56, died at Grande Ronde Hospital on May 3, 2001. She was born Nov. 15, 1944 in Los Angeles to Gregory and Ruth Willis. She attended grade school and junior high in Big Bear Lake, Calif., and high school in Burns, Ore.

JoAnn and John Joyce were married in 1975 in Dayton, Washington.

JoAnn lived in Wallowa County for 10 years. She was an avid horsewoman and enjoyed riding in the Eagle Cap Wilderness.

Survivors include her husband John Joyce of Joseph, daughter Jennifer M. Joyce of Enterprise, and sons Don and Ron Harshman and families of Tacoma, Washington. She was preceded in death by her mother Ruth Van Wagner and an infant daughter Tarina Joyce.

A memorial service will be held at the Enterprise Nazarene Church on Saturday, May 12, at 2 p.m. At her request she will be cremated and her ashes scattered at Aneroid Lake.

JAMES ST. JOHN

James Clifford St. John, 82, died May 5, 2001, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. He was Nov. 27, 1918, in Chinook, Montana, to William Logan St. John and Margaret Ellen (Denney) St. John. James served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a machinist. He spent his life ranching and working as a carpenter.

Survivors include daughters, Michelle Hansen of Stanfield, Ore., and Cindee Henderson of Hermiston, Ore.; brothers Gerald St. John of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Charles St. John of Hermiston; sister Dorothy Burgess of Clovis, New Mexico., and companion Ruth Fleming of Enterprise, and grandchildren Justin Henderson, Steve Henderson, and Brianna Hansen.

Services were held May 8, at the Enterprise cemetery. Donations are suggested to the charity of your choice in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.

DOUGLAS H. CHRISTY

A memorial service was held on May 24, 2001, at Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary in Portland for Douglas H. Christy, 81, who died May 20, 2001, at his home in Aloha.

Douglas was born Dec. 29, 1919, at Joseph, the son of Henry F and Ina Estes Christy.

"Dutch" grew up and attended schools in Joseph, graduating from the Joseph High School in 1937. In 1940, he moved to Portland where he was employed by Nabisco for 41 years, retiring in 1981 as shipping superintendent for the company. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

In 1941, he married Dorothy Williamson, who died in 1974. In 1975, he married Marian Appleton.

Survivors include his wife, Marian, at the home in Aloha; son, Douglas V. Christy, Blaine, Washington; daughter, Sharol Harper, Sherwood; stepson, Ren Appleton, West Linn; stepdaughter, Diane Peterson, Redmond; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. He was also survived by sisters, Mabel Wilcox, who died later on May 20, 2001, at Bellevue, WA; Voilet Eggebrecht, La Grande; and by a brother, Philip Christy, Adams. Two brothers, Raymond and Jack Christy, preceded him in death.

Donations may be made to the St. Vincent Hospice, Portland, Ore.

ROBERT KENDALL

Robert Charles Kendall, 75, of Enterprise, passed away at Wallowa Memorial Hospital on May 12, 2001.

He was born April 3, 1926, in Yakima, WA, to Harry Kyle Kendall and Bertha (King) Kendall. In 1946 he married Florence Gwendolyn (Long) Kendall. He worked as a parts manager for 42 years before retirement.

Robert was a member of St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Enterprise.

Survivors include his wife, Florence, of Enterprise; daughter Robin Warner of Wallowa; sons Robert C. Kendall of Hood River and Jeffrey L. Kendall of Wallowa; grandchildren Mara Niezen of Enterprise, Charity Burns of Madras, Casey, Jennifer and Cody Kendall of Hood River, Jeffrey Kendall of Wallowa and Jennifer Ann Goodale of Portland; great-grandchildren Emily and Kobe Burns of Madras, Cody Kendall of Hood River, Heidi Niezen of Enterprise, and Codi Fortune of Portland; a brother, Harry Kendall of Eugene; and a sister, Florian Bloxom of Yakima, Washington.

A memorial service was held May 15. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wallowa Memorial Hospital in care Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.
