Margaret Phillips
Margaret Phillips, 82, of Bend, died July 2, 2005, in Bend, of natural causes.
She was born Sept. 11, 1922, in Longview, Wash., to Clyde and Gertrude Hunsinger.
Mrs. Phillips grew up in Astoria where she married
Alvin "Al" Phillips Aug. 11, 1942.
In 1952, after Mr. Phillips' service in World War II and Korea, the couple moved to Brookings. They owned the Phillips Clothing store until they retired and moved to Mesa, Ariz., in the early 1980s.
She moved to Bend in 2004 to be near her son.
Mrs. Phillips was active in Beta Iota and many other community activities. She was an excellent wife and mother, her family said.
Survivors include sons Terry Phillips of Bend, Michael Phillips of Gold Beach. Also surviving are five granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Al in 1994.
She will be interred with her husband at Veterans cemetery in Eagle Point. No services will be held.

John Harvey ‘Jack' Stover
John Harvey "Jack" Stover Jr., 82, of Harbor, died July 6, 2005, at home.
He was born Aug. 6, 1922, in Oakland, Calif., to John Harvey Sr. and Clara Ashton Stover.
Raised attending a Presbyterian church in Oakland, Mr. Stover was also very patriotic and enlisted in the Army National Guard at the age of 16 in 1938. He graduated from Fremont High School in 1941 and was mobilized shortly thereafter to deploy with the 159th Infantry Brigade to fight in Europe.
While skilled at setting up battlefield communications in Germany, Mr. Stover also became well known and appreciated for his cooking skills. After the war he remained in the Army National Guard and continued to serve his country until his honorable discharge in the early 1950s.
He married
high school sweetheart Vella Mae Snyder in Oakland on Jan. 4, 1946, and the couple raised their family there. While in Oakland Mr. Stover became a Free and Accepted Mason.
An underground construction materials salesman, Mr. Stover worked for Certain-Teed Manufacturing for more than 25 years before retiring. He and his wife moved into Curry County 16 years ago to settle in Brookings-Harbor. During his time here, he avidly pursued his love of boating and fishing on the Klamath, Chetco, and Rogue rivers. He also enjoyed duck hunting and gardening. He was a member of the Brookings Elks Lodge and a volunteer of the Winchuck Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife Vella of Harbor; son John W. Stover; son and daughter-in-law Rob M. and Linda Stover; grandchildren Kristie and Kevin Stover and their mother, former daughter-in-law Jean Stover; and daughter-in-law Sally Ann Stover.
His eldest son, James H. Stover, preceded him in death in 2000.
Friends are invited to join family for a Celebration of Life Memorial at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12, at Brookings-Harbor Christian Church. Memorial contributions in Mr. Stover's honor are suggested to the Winchuck Volunteer Fire Department.
Arrangements for cremation and services are in care of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
Helen Lorene Thompson
Helen Lorene Thompson, 86, of Harbor, died July 5, 2005, at home, of natural causes.
She was born Sept. 24, 1918, in Tower Hill, Ill., to Robert William and Hulda Jane Morrison Whitlatch.
She married
Norman Claude Thompson Oct. 7, 1937, in St. Charles, Mo. She moved to Drain in 1944 and settled in Brookings in 1957.
Mrs. Thompson was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Brookings. She and her husband were members of the Rogue Valley Classic Cars, traveling on many occasions. She enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and took joy in the beauty of flowers. She considered her family and friends to be the most important part of her life, they said.
She spent some time working as a substitute mail carrier and was the bookkeeper for her husband's welding business.
Survivors include daughter Janet L. Yock of Brookings; granddaughter Theresa Steigleder of Medford; grandsons Richard Yock of Brookings, Raymond Yock of Harbor; granddaughters Lisa Yock-Lagunas, Madglyn Yock both of Harbor. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers Bill Whitlatch, Samual Whitlatch, and sisters Ethel Dahler and Beulah Hall.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 11, at W.J. Ward Memorial cemetery, Pastor Bob Friend officiating. A reception will follow at her daughter's home in Harbor.
Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
Donald Gene Hill
Donald Gene Hill, 75, of Brookings, died July 5, 2005, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City of natural causes.
He was born Oct. 16, 1929, in Rockford, Ill., to Stephen Hill and Florence Bowen Hill.
Mr. Hill retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant. He served 20 years and earned numerous awards for his service in the Vietnam and Korean wars.
He moved to Brookings in 1998 from Pearce, Ariz., where he owned a filbert nut farm.
He took great delight in cars and racing.
Survivors include friends Bob and Kay Van Kirk of Pearce, Gordy Frie of Pearce, Chad and Brett Buer, Larry Howard, Kenny Jackson, Randy Tracy, all of Brookings.
No service is planned.

Mable Helen Struebing Easton
Mable Helen Struebing Easton, 99, of Crescent City, Calif., died Oct. 19, 2005, in Crescent City.
She was born March 7, l906, in Grouse Flats to William K. and Maryett McLemore Ladd.
She moved from Los Angeles to Curry County in 1940. In 1958 she moved to Del Norte County.
She held occupied several offices with the Brookings Emblem Club 265 including president from 1975 to 1976, vice president, junior past president, supreme press secretary, financial secretary for two years and treasurer for two years. She was also a member of the Topaz Rebekah Lodge 241, Smith River Woman's Club, Brookings-Harbor Garden Club, Harbor Grange, Brookings Presbyterian Church and Brookings Eastern Star.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Marilyn and James Asher of Lake Arrowhead, Calif..; grandchildren Lynne Kiter of Crestline, Calif., Laure Ochart of Smith River, Calif.; great-grandchildren Aaron Ochart, of New Brunswick, N.J., Justen Ochart of Smith River, Amandah Ochart of Smith River, David Ochart of Smith River, Elizibeth Ochart of Smith River,Rabekah Ochart of Smith River, Kennen Ochart of Smith River, Micah Kiter of Brookings, Christopher Kiter of Crestline; great-great-grandson Elijah Kiter of Brookings.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Raymond Struebing and Freeman Easton, brothers Orville and George Ladd; sisters Maud Jackson and Mary Sheparo.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m . Monday, Oct. 24, at the Presbyterian Church in Brookings.
A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Calif.
