Jacqueline Mercer Proctor
July 27, 1925 – May 25, 2010
Jacqueline Mercer Proctor was born on July 27, 1925 to H Fred Mercer and Estelle Mabel Brown, a daughter amongst nine lively children. She cherished her childhood on the beautiful shores of Lake Erie, puttering about on the family boat and being with her friends. Jackie married Charles Proctor in Pennsylvania after WW2, and had many years of a loving marriage with three children: John, Nancy, and Debi, now of Michigan, Oregon, and California.
Jackie lived principally in three places: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Birmingham, Michigan; and San Juan Capistrano, California.
She loved action! She loved observing people working on projects, children playing, dogs gnawing on bones, and especially people opening up gifts from her! She had a twinkly mischievous zeal about her that attracted people to her. Each person felt entirely unique in their relationship with her. She had a sprite honesty about her that poked fun at herself, at others, at current events, and she maintained that humor throughout her illness with cancer.
Mom was brave. She was a model of living as a survivor; she lived independently, cherishing the lives of her children, the plants in her garden, and making constant improvements to her home. She was always willing to take on new adventures, especially in traveling, and was white water rafting after she turned 80!Proctor2
She loved shopping at bargain stores, and in fact, considered shopping as her hobby. All of her outfits were beautifully matched, inexpensive, and so cute on her, though she also had a taste for diamonds! She loved having long conversations over a glass of wine, or with Golden Girls on in the background. She was generous, so willing to share or treat others with gifts. She loved the unique, the beautiful, the simple parts of life. Her smile and soft glow were always a ready greeting.
Mom died on May 25, 2010 with an awful disease of cancer. She died swaddled in more love than she could ever have imagined with her three children giving her constant care; she died with kisses and strokes of her beautiful face.
She lived her last year at Avamere in Sherwood, Oregon, where she made many friends and was involved in as many activities as were provided at the facility. Avamere became a family for us all, and their warmth and caring will always be remembered.
Remembrances of Jackie could be made through the American Cancer Society, Portland Office, 0330 SW Curry Street, Portland, Oregon 97239; 503-295-6422
