Nitta B. White

Nitta B. White, 74, of Big River, Calif., formerly of Medford, died Jan. 31, 2001, at Havasu Nursing Center in California.

She was born April 12, 1926, in Sonora, Calif.

During World War II, Mrs. White worked at a radio plant in San Franciso. She then moved to Redding, Calif., where she worked for Woolworths and Montgomery Ward. She moved to Medford in 1963, working as a manager and buyer for Robinson Department Store. She moved to Big River, Calif., following her retirement in 1984.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and served as president in 1988-89. She was also a member of the Parker Hospital Auxiliary and Thrift Shop.

Survivors include her husband, Cleo, Big River, Calif.; and two brothers, Cliff and Dan Steele, both Sacramento, Calif.

Arrangements: Parker Funeral Home, Parker, Ariz.

Katherine ‘Kay’ Hansen

The funeral service for Katherine May "Kay" Hansen will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at O’Hair & Riggs Funeral Chapel, Klamath Falls. The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Medford Assembly of God, 1225 McAndrews.

Mrs. Hansen, 82, of Medford, died Saturday (March 31, 2001) at Farmington Square, Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born April 2, 1918, in Klamath Falls, the daughter of James and Greta Brewbaker. She graduated from Klamath Union High School in 1936. On Oct. 15, 1948, in Klamath Falls, she married Theodore H. Hansen, who died in 1990.

Mrs. Hansen was a homemaker. She also did office work throughout the years at Klamath Falls Chamber of Commerce, Sears and Crater Lake Machinery.

She was a Girl Scout leader and had been a member of Beta Sigma Phi since 1936. She moved to Farmington Square in 1995.

Known as "Queen of the Kitchen, " she enjoyed cooking and canning, hosting parties and raising her family.

Survivors include three sons, Tim Hansen, Douglas G. Hansen, and Keith Kaler; three daughters, Denise R. Jensen, Loraine Hansen and Beverly Haftel; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, David Hansen; and a brother, Robert Brewbaker.

Arrangements: O’Hair & Riggs Funeral Chapel, Klamath Falls.

Jeanine Darlyne Metz

A celebration of the life of Jeanine Darlyne Metz will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the family home in Shady Cove. Family and friends will officiate.

Mrs. Metz, 72, of Shady Cove, died Tuesday (April 3, 2001) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Feb. 9, 1929, in Echo, Minn., a daughter of Gerald and Clara Borning. On Nov. 10, 1979, she married Keith Metz, who survives.

Mrs. Metz was a bank teller and bookkeeper. She also leased and managed several gas stations throughout the years. She was a longtime resident of Shady Cove.

She enjoyed gardening, camping, reading and traveling.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Deborah Kuchenbecker, Shady Cove; a sister, Rae Olson, Jacksonville; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Diana Barton

Diana Barton, 83, of Ashland, died March 29, 2001, at Ashland Community Hospital. The memorial service was held April 1, at Litwiller-Simonsen Chapel. Interment was later that day at Jacksonville Cemetery. Rabbi Marc Sirinsky officiated.

She was born Aug. 14, 1917, in Paterson, N.J., the daughter of Reuben and Anna Fox. On Nov. 15, 1934, in Atlanta, Ga., she married George Barton of Brooklyn, N.Y. They traveled by train to Los Angeles in 1945, where they lived until 1980, when they moved to Medford. She moved to Ashland after her husband’s death in 1987.

In the Rogue Valley, Mrs. Barton was active at Temple Emek Shalom, cooking meals, hosting services and serving as Sisterhood President.

She enjoyed musical theater, cabaret shows, dancing, reading, and following the activities of her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Bruce G., Ashland; and three grandsons.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Wilfred ‘Willie’ Huffman

The funeral service for Wilfred "Willie" Scott Huffman will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Memory Gardens Mortuary in Medford. The graveside service will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Huffman, 86, of Medford, died Tuesday (April 3, 2001) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Oct. 14, 1914, in Washoe, Mont. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1925 from Utah and attended school in Central Point. On April 14, 1940, in Medford, he married Vesta Miller, who survives.

Mr. Huffman owned several businesses in Medford. He and his brother, Everett, were partners in Huffman Brothers Hardware on Highway 99, and Huffman Truck and Auto Parts on Riverside Avenue, the current site of Rogue Valley Mall. He and his wife owned Huffman Truck and Trailer Repair and Huffman’s New and Used, all in Medford.

He was a member of the Medford Moose Lodge, where he was Past Governor. He was a Pilgrim, the highest member degree in the Moose Lodge.

Mr. Huffman enjoyed camping, fishing and golf.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Bill, Coos Bay; two daughters, Jackie Tomlin, Medford, and Kay Somics, Springfield; a brother, Gerald, Aloha; a sister, Esther Higgins, Medford; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Everett and Glen; and a sister, Thelma Muir.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Lenore Alvina Rice

The graveside service for Lenore Alvina Rice will be at 2 p.m. today at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland.

Mrs. Rice, 97, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday (April 3, 2001) at Three Rivers Community Hospital, Washington Campus.

She was born May 6, 1903, in Watertown, S.D. In 1922, in Payette, Idaho, she married Elmer Keifer, who died in 1945. In 1948, in Centralia, Wash., she married Richard Rice, who died in 1996. They moved to Hillsboro and lived there until 1958, when they moved back to Centralia. They also lived in Chehalis, Wash.

While living in Chehalis, Mrs. Rice was active in the Adna Community Church and the Garden Club. She moved to Grants Pass in 1996.

She was an accomplished seamstress. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, flowers and people.

Survivors include two sons, Orville Keifer, Salem, and Donald Keifer, Eagle, Idaho; a daughter, Shirley Rhodes, Grants Pass; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Vert Keifer.

Alma Jean Robbins

Alma Jean Robbins, 69, of Gresham, formerly of Medford and Grants Pass, died March 29, 2001 in Gresham. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 115, Portland, OR 97219-5481.

She was born Alma Kuhn on Feb. 7, 1932, in Ashland, Neb. She lived in the Medford and Grants Pass area from 1945 to 1983, and graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1950. On Dec. 25, 1976, in Reno, Nev., she married Stanley "Stan" Robbins, who survives.

Mrs. Robbins was a motel manager in Portland, retiring in 1993.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include six sons, Charles W. Harvey, Corey A. Robbins, Kent D. Robbins, Stan E. Robbins, Keith E. Robbins, and Robert D. Robbins; two daughters, Renee Williams, Fort Worth, Texas; and Carol J. Robbins, Talent; a sister, Ellen Tobias, Klamath Falls; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother.

Laurence Clair Burkhart

Laurence Clair Burkhart, 90, of Grants Pass, died March 30, 2001 at Highland House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. No service is planned.

He was born Nov. 29, 1910, in Vancouver, Wash. On Feb. 10, 1932, in Santa Ana, Calif., he married Catherine Johnston, who survives. They moved to Grants Pass from Los Angeles in 1947.

Mr. Burkhart enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Janice Olson, Grants Pass, and Sharon Hull, Eugene; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
