‘Ted’ W. Hammond

The funeral service for Theodore "Ted" Wendell Hammond will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Bethel Church in Medford. Pastor Tim Olson will officiate. A reception will follow at the church. The private graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. in Trail Cemetery.

Mr. Hammond, 85, of Medford, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2001) in Medford.

He was born Dec. 19, 1915, in Macdoel, Calif., near Dorris, the son of Jirah Dennis and Ethel Maud (Kemp) Hammond. At the age of eight, he left home to fend for himself as a ranch hand and chore boy. In 1935, he moved to Klamath Falls, where he worked as a choker setter and mill worker.

On Oct. 17, 1936, in Reno, Nev., he married Alta Mae Todd, who survives.

Mr. Hammond changed careers in 1939 and began selling Fords at Balsiger Motor Company and Nashes at his own company, Link River Motors. During World War II, he worked as a carpenter and helped construct OIT in Klamath Falls.

After moving to Medford in 1949, he owned and operated Valley Motors Used Cars for 15 years. He worked as general manager for Morse Motors Volkswagens for nine years, for Dick Knight in 1974-75, and for Crater Lake Ford from 1975 until his retirement in 1981.

Mr. Hammond was a life member of the Elks Lodge No. 1168. He had been a member since 1986 of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Medford, where he taught Sunday School and was known as "Grandpa Ted."

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and fly-tying.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Dennis, Eagle Point, and Larry, Hines; two sisters, Alice McDonald and Ruth Lund, both Klamath Falls; a brother, Art, Redmond, Wash.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ida Friedrich, Nora Gilmore and Dorothy Hammond; and two brothers, Harry and Charles.

Friends may pay their respects from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Violet Sadie Beacham

The funeral service for Violet Sadie Beacham will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Chapel. The graveside service will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Beacham, 76, of Pahrump, Nev., formerly of the Rogue Valley, died Sunday (Feb. 18, 2001) in Las Vegas.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 2825 Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504, or Providence Home Care, 1180 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Nov. 22, 1924, in Culver. She married Grant Beacham. They later divorced.

Ms. Beacham worked for Providence Medford Medical Center, retiring in 1985. She lived in and around the Rogue Valley for 25 years.

She enjoyed reading and raising her seven children.

Survivors include four sons, Al and Ivan, both Medford, Doyle, Echo, and Bill, Costa Mesa, Calif.; three daughters, Victoria Olive, Vivian Evens, Spokane, Wash., and Debora Meed, Warden, Wash.; three brothers; two sisters, one of which, Vivian Jones, is her twin; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda.

Friends may pay their respects from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hillcrest Chapel, Medford.

Viola Louise Swindler

Viola Louise Swindler, 79, of Medford, died Saturday (Feb. 17, 2001) at her home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gleaners Network, 211 N. Front St., Central Point, OR 97502.

She was born Nov. 25, 1921, in Dole, a daughter of Byron and Matilda Coulter, who homesteaded Ramsey Canyon in Sams Valley. On Nov. 26, 1937, in Jacksonville, she married Jake Swindler, who died in 1983.

Mrs. Swindler received her real estate license in 1962. She worked in real estate sales, retiring in 1983. She also owned Valley Poultry in Central Point for eight years.

She was a volunteer for the Gleaning Network in Central Point for 16 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Hazel Brown, Central Point, Nita Gosnell, Eagle Point, and Shirley Day, Richland; a brother, Wade Coulter, Wimer; a sister, Florence Roberts, Shingletown, Calif.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lorraine.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care, Central Point.

Alice Marion Mains

Alice Marion Mains, 76, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (Feb. 18, 2001) at Highland House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass. A private service was held at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

She was born Jan. 24, 1925, in San Francisco, the daughter of Frederick and Emily Loescher. On July 16, 1939, in Carson City, Nev., she married Harvey Mains, who survives. They moved to Grants Pass in 1975 from Livermore, Calif.

Mrs. Mains was a member of Rogue River Valley Grange No. 469, Etna Rebekah Lodge No. 49, and Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary No. 11.

She had a vast collection of salt and pepper shakers, and was an avid crossword puzzle fan.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Harvey Jr., Redding, Conn.; and Richard, Grants Pass; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Frances Grantham Conrad

Frances Grantham Conrad, 87, of White City, died Feb. 5, 2001, at her home. A private service is planned.

She was born April 25, 1913, in Easton, Kan. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1919 from Kansas. On Feb. 3, 1979, in Eagle Point, she married Paul Conrad, who survives.

Mrs. Conrad was in charge of the lunch program at Jacksonville School for eight years. She was also a homemaker.

She was a member of the dance club at the Eagles Lodge, the Social Benefits Club and the 50 Plus Club.

Mrs. Conrad enjoyed traveling, dancing, reading and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Kay Zimmerlee, Paradise, Calif.; five stepdaughters; a sister, Clair Dobbyn, Jacksonville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband Earl Grantham; and a daughter, Nola Holder.

Leitha Trefren

Leitha Trefren, 67, of Medford, died Wednesday (Feb. 21, 2001) at her home. The memorial service will be held later.

She was born July 1, 1933, in Medford, the daughter of Keith and Faith Scott. She graduated from Butte Falls High School. On June 30, 1950, in Medford, she married Eddie Trefren, who survives.

Mrs. Trefren worked for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1992. She lived in the Rogue Valley all her life.

She was a member of Eckankar.

Mrs. Trefren enjoyed knitting, traveling and camping.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Wayne, Jacksonville; and a daughter, Karen Trefren, Bellevue, Neb. She was preceded in death by three brothers.

‘Babs’ Moir Mason

Mildred "Babs" Moir Mason, 76, of Medford, died Feb. 15, 2001, at her home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairy Godmothers Fund, 1200 Mira Mar, Medford, OR 97504, or the Rogue Valley Manor Foundation Fund, 1200 Mira Mar, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Sept. 14, 1924, in Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii, a daughter of John Troup Moir Jr. and Gertrude Fisher Moir. She graduated from Punahou High School in Honolulu, and from Mills College in Oakland. In 1949, in Lahaina, Maui, she married George G. Mason.

Ms. Mason was a school teacher. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1994 from Hawaii.

She enjoyed theater, music and gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Wendy Anne Mason, Medford; a son, George G. Jr., Houston; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, John Moir Mason; and a brother.
