David Joe Sumpter

Dec. 31, 1949 - June 19, 2009

Nyssa - David Joe Sumpter, age 61, of Nyssa, Ore., passed away suddenly Friday, June 19, 2009, while working in Nyac, Alaska. His family takes comfort knowing that his last hours were spent doing what he loved. A visitation for family and friends will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, June 29, 2009, at Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette. Graveside services with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Riverside Cemetery, Payette. Services and arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette.

David, the son of Eales “Fort” Sumpter and Dorothy Payne Sumpter, longtime residents of the Owyhee, Nyssa, Ore., community, was born Dec. 31, 1949, in Ontario, Ore. He was raised and educated in Nyssa, graduating from Nyssa High School in 1966.

His parents, being avid rock hounds, spurred his interest in rocks and minerals. David followed his scientific curiosity and earned an A.S. degree from Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario in 1968 and his B.S. in geology from Oregon State University in 1970.

On Sept. 19, 1970, David married Patricia “Pat” Anderson in a small church not far from her home in Boise, Idaho. The newlyweds made their home close to David’s parents and grandparents on the small farm where he grew up.

Soon after, David enlisted in the Air Force. After completing basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, and the weather observer course at the Chanute AFB, Ill., he was assigned to the Air Weather Service Wing at the Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah where he served for four years. He was promoted to sergeant in 1973.

The next several years brought the birth of his three children, Phillip, Jacob and Sarah, and a move to Alaska where the family remained from 1982 to 1996 while David worked as a geologist for various companies. In 1996, the family returned to the Sumpter family home in Nyssa, though David continued to work in Alaska.

At the age of 56, David graduated with academic distinction from the nursing school at Treasure Valley Community College and worked as an LPN for four years at the state school in Nampa, Idaho, before returning to geology in 2008.

Throughout his career, David chose work and hobbies that both challenged him and kept him active outdoors. This often took him away from his wife and children but gave him the opportunity to work in remote parts of Alaska and, for a brief time, in China. He spent much of his time boating, riding bike and fossil hunting, oftentimes taking his family and grandchildren with him.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Pat Anderson Sumpter; his oldest son, Phillip, and his children, Joseph, Kyle and Zachary; his son, Jacob, and his children, Richard Jones, Jessica, Sephra and Jacob Jr.; his daughter, Sarah Sumpter Perryman; and a half-brother, Robert Sumpter. David was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harry Lee Sumpter; and a half-brother, Jack L. Sumpter.

The family would like to thank Mike James, Jim Anderson, Mark Reed, of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, and members of the Alaska State Troopers for their work to bring David back home to his family and the care and support they have given them. The family’s hearts go out to the other members of David’s mining crew for their care.
