Lela L. Bates

Lela L. Bates, 89, of Eugene, formerly of Medford, died Thursday (March 16, 2000) in Eugene of age-related causes. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201 or to Gideons, P.O. Box 82, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Dec. 12, 1910, in Grants Pass, a daughter of Roy and Delia (Knighton) Hammerly.

On Aug. 30, 1930, in Klamath Falls, she married W. Keith Bates Sr., who died in 1997. She moved to Eugene from Medford in 1969.

Mrs. Bates was a member of the Emerald Baptist Church in Eugene.

Survivors include a son, Keith Jr., Albany; a brother, Ralph H. Foster, Klamath Falls; a sister, Billie Reeder, Seattle; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Musgrove Family Mortuary, Eugene.

William `Bill' Gier

The memorial service for William "Bill" Gier will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hoyt-Cole Chapel of the Flowers in Red Bluff, Calif.

Mr. Gier, 77, a two-year resident of Phoenix, died Saturday (March 18, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, c/o Hoyt-Cole Chapel of the Flowers, P.O. Box 668, Red Bluff, CA 96080.

He was born Dec. 5, 1922, in Leavenworth, Wash. He moved to Red Bluff, Calif., in 1945.

In 1946, he married Nancy Ellis, who now lives at Hearthstone in Medford.

The Giers owned and operated several businesses in Red Bluff for 51 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Judy Ridner, Talent, and Pat Vargas, Ashland; two sisters, Wilma Tucker, Portland, and Jeanette Williams, Everett, Wash; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hoyt-Cole Chapel of Flowers, Red Bluff, Calif.

David Richard Bliss

The memorial service for David Richard Bliss will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Holcomb of the Assembly of God in Prospect will officiate.

Mr. Bliss, 64, of Prospect, died Thursday (March 16, 2000) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Prospect School District 59, 160 Mill Creek Drive, Prospect, OR 97536.

He was born Nov. 13, 1935, in Libby, Mont. He moved to the Rogue Valley more than 55 years ago from Montana.

Mr. Bliss owned and operated Diamond S.D. Logging from 1977 until his retirement in 1998.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Bliss was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and his horses.

Survivors include two sons, Dale D., Prospect, and Alan Lee, Medford; a sister, Jane Ogborn, Talent; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl, in 1976.

Fred Clover Geist

The graveside service for Fred Clover Geist will be at 11 a.m. today at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastor Chad McComas of Set Free Christian Fellowship in Medford will officiate.

Mr. Geist, 62, of Medford, died March 13, 2000, at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1425 Irving, Suite 100, Portland, OR 97232.

He was born July 21, 1937, in Brookville, Pa.

Mr. Geist was a machinist in the tool and die industry, retiring in 1985. He moved to the Rogue Valley from California in 1985.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Mr. Geist attended Set Free Christian Fellowship.

He enjoyed fishing, camping and hang gliding.

Survivors include a son, Fredrick, Oakdale, Wash.; his mother, Margarita Geist, Huntington Beach, Calif.; three sisters, Rosalie Geist, Huntington Beach; Karen Myers, Seal Beach, Calif.; and Sharon Wise, Lake Arrowhead, Calif.

Wesley Addison Price

The memorial service for Wesley Addison Price will be at 2 p.m. today at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Grants Pass.

Mr. Price, 66, of Talent, died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at his home.

He was born July 12, 1933, in Vale. He moved to Grants Pass from Vale in 1947.

On April 13, 1975, in Reno, he married Helen Daniels, who survives. He moved to Talent in 1995.

Mr. Price owned and operated Handy San Restaurant and Main Street Grill, both in Talent.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and racing cars.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Steve, Grants Pass, and Justin, Medford; two daughters, Debbie Daniels, Talent, and Christine "Sam" Hascup, Central Point; two stepsons, Bill Berry, Grants Pass, and Steve Berry, Talent; two stepdaughters,

Nicole Fisher and Natalie Culp, both Talent; three sisters, Beulah Bell Cousins and Kate Burtch, both La Grande, and Wilma Freeman, Eugene; two brothers, Irving Jr., Vale, and Morton "Mut, " Brownsville; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Johannes M.P. Kurt

Johannes M.P. Kurt, 78, of Medford, died March 9, 2000, at his home. A celebration of life through music and shared memories will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Prime Time Retirement Apartments, 2979 E. Barnett Road, Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Opera Association, 33 N. Central Ave., Suite 409, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born June 20, 1921, in Berlin, Germany. He grew up in what later became the Russian Zone. As a young man, he earned a master diploma in sheet metal and plumbing and became a master electrician. He spent three and a half years as a prisoner of war in England during and after World War II. Upon his release to Stuttgart, West Germany, he helped his brother-in-law build his furniture business, where he apprenticed as a joiner and cabinet maker, becoming a master.

In 1950, he married Hildegart-Irene Otto, who survives. They immigrated to the United States in 1955. The couple lived in the San Francisco Bay area for 25 years.

Mr. Kurt earned a CLU degree (chartered life underwriter) and learned the insurance business. He became a district manager for one of Germany's largest insurance firms, Allianz, overseeing 500 agents. He retired from the insurance field after suffering a massive heart attack in 1976. He moved to Medford in 1979.

Mr. Kurt was an active member of the Rogue Valley Opera Guild and was an ardent supporter of the Rogue Valley Opera Association. In 1998, they presented him with a Volunteer of the Year Award.

He enjoyed organic gardening, canning and dehydrating, stamp collecting and reading science fiction.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Rosi, Columbus, Ohio.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care, Central Point.

Bessie Fay Jacquot

The funeral for Bessie Fay Roegge Jacquot will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel in Medford.

Mrs. Jacquot, 93, of White City, died Friday (March 17, 2000) at her home.

She was born Bessie Fay Harrington on Nov. 20, 1906, in Lynn County, Texas. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1957.

On Aug. 28, 1939, in Santa Anna, Calif., she married Albert Roegge, who died in July 1983.

Mrs. Jacquot was a member of the Assembly of God Bethel Church. She enjoyed writing poetry, crocheting and reading the Bible.

Survivors include a son, Ben Neel of Central Point; a sister, Clara Mae of Roswell, N.M.; seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, three sons and one brother.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel, 2201 N. Phoenix Road in Medford.
