Ralph A. Westgaard

Ralph A. Westgaard, 76, of Ashland, died Sunday (March 12, 2000) at Mid Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles. The memorial service will be held later in Ashland. Private cremation and interment of ashes will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels, 110 E. Main St., Ashland, OR 97520, or to a favorite charity.

He was born Aug. 20, 1923, in Lewistown, Mont., a son of Asborne E. and Gyda Johanna (Bergoust) Westgaard. He grew up in Central Montana, and graduated from high school in Moore, Mont., in 1941.

Mr. Westgaard worked for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle prior to World War II. After the war, he worked as a mechanic in heavy construction and was in partnership with his brother, John, in Westgaard Construction Company of Ashland for many years.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as a tail gunner in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned to Montana. He later moved to Alaska before coming to Oregon, to live in Mill City and Ashland.

Mr. Westgaard enjoyed reading, riding motorcycles in his younger days, and tinkering with anything mechanical.

Survivors include a brother, Arthur, in Italy; four sisters, Dorothy E. Kummer, Elizabeth, Colo., Sue Willson, The Dalles, Sally Lay, Great Falls, Mont., and Joyce Cope, Lewistown, Mont. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Walter and Norman; and two sisters, Betty Lou and Margaret Ann.

Lillian J. Cook

The graveside service for Lillian J. Cook will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastor Bob Murphy, retired, formerly of Eastwood Baptist Church of Medford, will officiate.

Mrs. Cook, 75, of Rogue River, died Tuesday (March 14, 2000) at Hearthstone.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 9320 S.W. Barbur Blvd., Suite 140, Portland, OR 97219.

She was born Lillian Spencer on Dec. 13, 1924, in Rockville, R.I.

On Sept. 27, 1947, in Rockville, R.I., she married Robert H. Cook, who survives. She moved to the Rogue Valley 40 years ago.

Mrs. Cook enjoyed volunteering at the Eastwood Baptist Church.

She enjoyed bird watching, reading, crossword puzzles, and watching baseball, especially the Yankees.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Robert H. Jr., Medford, and David E., Jacksonville; a daughter, Lori L. Lantz, Medford; two sisters, Eileen Matteson and Carolyn Travis, both in Rhode Island; and one grandchild.

Sonia C. Lemmens

The funeral Mass for Sonia Constantina Lemmens will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the River Catholic Mission at Hope Presbyterian Church, 515 E. Broadway, Rogue River. The Rev. Gregory Moys will officiate. The graveside service will follow at Woodville Cemetery.

Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. today at Our Lady of the River Catholic Mission.

Mrs. Lemmens, 84, of Rogue River, died Tuesday (March 14, 2000) at her home.

She was born Aug. 6, 1915, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of Constantine and Olga (Kolesnick) Chuevsky.

On May 19, 1940, in Inglewood, Calif., she married Leo Lemmens, who survives.

Mrs. Lemmens was a sales clerk for the Sears Catalog Store in Downey, Calif. for 12 years, retiring in 1975. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1979 from Downey.

She was a member of Our Lady of the River Catholic Mission in Rogue River.

She enjoyed reading, playing cards with friends, singing in the church choir and crossword puzzles.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Robert, Wimer, and Richard, Westlake Village, Calif.; two daughters, Susan Bouris, Downey, Calif., and Teresa Nero, Houston; a sister, Helen Matusevich, South Gate, Calif.; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Held, in 1999.

LaVerna M. Schroeder

LaVerna Marie Schroeder, 93, of Eugene, formerly of Medford, died March 8, 2000, at her home. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born LaVerna Huber on July 14, 1906, in Ripon, Wisc.

She married Arthur Schroeder, who died in 1979.

Mrs. Schroeder was a homemaker. She lived in the Rogue Valley for 30 years and moved to Eugene two years ago.

She enjoyed antiques.

Survivors include a son, David Arthur, Medford; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Charline Y. Serat

Charline Y. Serat, 93, of Medford, died Tuesday (March 14, 2000) at Rogue Valley Manor Health Center. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Manor Foundation, 1200 Mira Mar, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Charline Young on March 12, 1907, in Denver.

Mrs. Serat was a style consultant and designer for Bernat Yarn Company of Boston. She conducted schools throughout the U.S. for shop owners, buyers, and knitting instructors on various knitting and hand work techniques, merchandising, display and shop management. She also presented fashion shows of the original hand-knit models used in their instruction books across the U.S. She was considered to be an authority on the technical aspect of hand knitting, which included designing and charting for individual needs, and had been a guest commentator on various television shows.

Mrs. Serat is listed in the "Who's Who of American Women" and "Who's Who in Commerce and Industry." She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1983 from Walnut Creek, Calif.

She was a member of the P.E.O. and the Methodist Church.

Mrs. Serat enjoyed lawn bowling and traveling.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Cross, High Wycombe, England; a stepson, Bill Serat, in the Bay Area in California; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Moynahan; her second husband, George Serat; and a sister, Mildred Pneuman.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Jack Norris Logan

The funeral for Jack Norris Logan will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on Savage Street, in Grants Pass. Interment will follow in Woodville Cemetery in Rogue River. Veterans for Veterans will provide military honors.

Mr. Logan, 72, of Rogue River, died March 10, 2000, at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue River Area Annual Fund Drive, National Cancer Research Fund, 700 13th St., Suite 950, Washington, D.C. 20069-2046.

He was born Feb. 26, 1928, in Los Angeles.

On Nov. 27, 1987, in Lake Havasu City, he married E. LuDene Killian, who survives.

Mr. Logan worked for McCullogh Corporation in in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., retiring in 1988. He moved to Rogue River in 1995 from Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Logan was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Rogue River Branch.

He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Cheryl Denise Logan Bilby, Muncie, Ind.; three stepsons, Dennis Killian, Delta, Utah, Richard Killian, Fremont, Calif., and Craig Killian, Marysville, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Cheryl Killian, Jacksonville; a brother, Richard, Las Vegas; three grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respect from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass, or from noon to 12:45 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Savage Street, Grants Pass.
