‘Betty’ Watson Snider

Elisabeth "Betty" Watson Snider died Sept. 7, 2000, at Providence Medford Medical Center from complications of a stroke suffered on May 26. The memorial service will be held later.

She was born Elisabeth Watson on May 21, 1916, in Nampa, Idaho. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of West Virginia and a master’s degree in education from Columbia University in New York City.

On Aug. 2, 1941, in Oakland, Md., she married Daniel C. Snider, who died in 1987. They moved in 1972 to Medford, where they were members of the Medford Rose Society and the First Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Snider was a teacher in Maracaibo, Venezuela, for one year, and in private schools in Staten Island, N.Y., and Houston, Texas.

She was a volunteer with the Auxiliary at Rogue Valley Medical Center for 25 years. She was a member of the P.E.O., a women’s service club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Following her husband’s death, she established a Rotary scholarship in his name.

Mrs. Snider enjoyed world travel, reading, her rose garden and needlework.

Survivors include a son, Dan, Poplar Bluff, Mo., a daughter, Elisabeth Tuck, Lafayette, Calif.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

James J. Mechura

James J. Mechura, 85, of Rogue River, died Aug. 29, 2000, at his home. A private service was held Monday, Sept. 11 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. The Rev. Gregory Moys of St. Anne’s Catholic Church officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, P.O. Box 1663, Medford, OR 97501, or the Salvation Army, 922 N. Central, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born April 15, 1915, in St. Paul, Minn.

On Sept. 25, 1942, in Los Angeles, he married Margaret M. Lubbehusen, who survives.

Mr. Mechura was a sales representative. In 1960 he was one of 10 sales representatives nominated by the Los Angeles Sales Executive Club to compete for the annual "Sammy" award.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in Europe and the Philippines.

Mr. Mechura was a past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4116 in Rogue River and past president of the South Torrance Lions Club in California. He was also a member of the Navy League in California, American Legion Post 28, and Medford Elks Lodge 1168.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening and participating in civic affairs.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a brother, Robert, St. Paul, Minn.; and a sister, Dorothy Himmelwright, West Richland, Wash.;

Walter Paul Hoffman

Walter Paul Hoffman, 80, of Ashland, died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) in Ashland. No service is planned. His ashes will be scattered at sea by the U.S. Navy from Bremerton, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 691 Murphy Road, Suite 236, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Vincennes, Ind. He received a liberal arts degree from the University of Vincennes and later received a master’s degree in teaching and psychology from what is now Southern Oregon University.

On April 25, 1945, in Mare Island, Vallejo, Calif., he married Edna, who survives.

Mr. Hoffman served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, retiring as a lieutenant commander in 1964. Following his retirement from the Navy he began a second career as a teacher. He taught at McLoughlin Middle School for 17 years.

He was interested in amateur radio and wrote two books on radio communication, one for the Norwegian Navy and one for students of amateur radio.

During the Vietnam War, he was a member of the M.A.R.Z. network that relayed messages home from servicemen and women serving overseas.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Lise Hoffman-McCabe, Bend, and Paula Wulff, Memphis, Tenn.; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory; and a brother.

Claudine Alexander

The memorial service for Claudine Alexander will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Full Gospel Church in Grants Pass. Pastor Herman King will officiate. The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Alexander, 68, of Gold Hill, died Tuesday (Sept. 12, 2000) at her home.

She was born Dec. 3, 1931, in Kansas City, Mo., a daughter of Kenneth and Lucille Scott.

On Jan. 18, 1978, in Reno, Nev., she married Frank Alexander, who survives.

Mrs. Alexander was a legal secretary until her retirement. She moved to Gold Hill in 1990 from Susanville, Calif.

She was a member of Bethel Full Gospel Church, where the played the bass guitar.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Ken McCormick, Westwood, Calif., and Lee Alexander, Manhattan, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Lucy E. Meyer

The funeral for Lucy Eda Meyer will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Meyer, 98, of Medford, died Monday (Sept. 11, 2000) in Medford.

She was born March 12, 1902, above Shady Cove and Trail, the daughter of Daniel and Rosetta Foeller. As a teenager, she worked as a "day maid" at Crater Lake National Park for two years during the summer. In high school, she worked as a nanny for the Hart and Phipps families.

On June 10, 1923, she married Walter C. Schmidt, who died in 1969.

On June 5, 1970, in Jacksonville, she married Edward J. Meyer, who died in 1982.

She and her first husband, Walter, owned and operated a commercial fruit and produce farm near the spot where Witham Truck Stop now stands.

As a lifetime resident of the Rogue Valley, she had many relatives in the Johnson Family Cemetery in Shady Cove.

Mrs. Meyer was a founding member of the 50+ Club.

She enjoyed gardening, dancing and playing cards.

Survivors include a daughter, Caroline Schmidt-Hacker, Port Angeles, Wash.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Foeller; and two sisters, Eula Salter and Sadie Kingsley.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Conger-Morris in Medford.

Elizabeth M. Januscheski

Elizabeth Mae Januscheski, 63, of Weiser, Idaho, formerly of Medford, died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at Weiser. No service is planned.

She was born April 16, 1937, in San Diego, a daughter of Robert and Juanita Skinner Stafford.

Ms. Januscheski lived in Medford for about 30 years. She had recently moved to Weiser to be near her sister, Carol.

Survivors include a daughter, Robyn Januscheski; her mother, Juanita Summers; two sisters, Carol Jones, and Marjie McCowen; three brothers, Bartlett Stafford, Robert Stafford, and Jerry Summers; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Deborah and Dani.

Arrangements: Thomason Funeral Home, Weiser, Idaho.

Harold ‘Tony’ Clark

The memorial service for Harold "Tony" Clark will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Mr. Clark, 88, of Medford, died Tuesday (Sept. 12, 2000) at his home.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
