Richard M. Phillips

The graveside service for Richard M. Phillips will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Phillips, 74, formerly of Medford, died Monday (Sept. 4, 2000) in Crescent City, Calif.

He was born Jan. 19, 1926, in Medford, a son of James and Mildred (Huson) Phillips. He graduated from Medford High School in 1945.

On March 8, 1947, in Medford, he married Edna Price, who survives. They moved to Brookings in 1991.

Mr. Phillips was a truck driver for Pacific Motor Trucking for 40 years.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Phillips served as a referee for Little League and for men’s basketball. He was a member of the Teamsters and American Disabled Veterans.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and participating in and attending ballgames.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, Robert, Portland, James and Kenneth, both Sipan, N. Mariana, and Ronald, Tacoma, Wash.; a brother, Jack, Kelso, Wash.; two sisters, Lois Conrad, Central Point, and Barbara Clemans, Medford; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Arrangements: Scantlin’s Brookings Mortuary and Chapel.

Hayes H. Rossman

Hayes H. Rossman, 73, of Medford, died August 27, 2000, at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A private service will be held.

He was born Sept. 28, 1926, in Pittsburgh, the only child of Pealer and Nan (Hamilton) Rossman. He received a photo technician diploma from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1949.

In May 1947, in Denver, he married Rosemary "Skip" Lay, who died in 1992.

Mr. Rossman was a master sergeant in the U. S. Air Force, retiring in 1970.

He moved to the Rogue Valley after his retirement. In 1979, he received a bachelor’s degree in geography and in 1981 a master’s degree from what is now Southern Oregon University.

Mr. Rossman worked for Bell Telephone. He also owned a photographic studio in Medford from 1981 through 1992 and was a geography instructor at Rogue Community College from 1981-1986.

Mr. Rossman was on the Medford Planning Commission for eight years, serving as chairman for two years, with a special interest in local air quality. He was past president and an active member of the Central Point Rotary, the Medford Rifle and Pistol Club, Roxy Ann Grange since 1971, Jackson County Pomona Grange, Oregon State Grange and National Grange. He was also a member of the District Commission of Boy Scouts of America, Crater Lake Council.

He was an avid glass collector and belonged to the Early American Patterned Glass Society, the National Rifle Association and the American Philatelist Society.

Survivors include a son, Peter H., The Dalles; two daughters, Deborah R. Lawrence, New Britain, Conn., and Janis R. Hill, Bangor, Maine; and seven grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors.

Ray Hubbell

The graveside service for Ray Hubbell will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Medford. Pastor Richard Kirk will officiate.

Mr. Hubbell, 86, of Medford, died Tuesday (Sept. 5, 2000) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, Or 97501, or the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 649 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Oct. 19, 1913, in Parnell, Mo., a son of Harry and Myrtle Keene Hubbell. During the 1920s, he played semi-pro baseball for the Canadians.

On May 30, 1937, in Ventura, Calif., he married Ruth Eleanor Ringsby, who survives. He moved to Medford in 1949 from Ojai, Calif.

Mr. Hubbell was a supervisor in the Department of Weed Control for Jackson County for 25 years, retiring in 1975. His knowledge in the field was used for state and county roads, by the Department of Agriculture and County Parks Department and by many chemical companies. He also started the Rayspray company. when farm weed control called for a commercial spray.

During World War II, he served in the Navy Seabees in the South Pacific.

As president of the Young Farmers Group Mr. Hubbell managed the food booths for the 4-H Young Farmer Leaders during the county fair. As past president of the Oregon Weed Conference, he organized the Oregon’s County Weed Sprayers Association, and with the assistance of Oregon state professors offered short courses to local farmers and sprayers. He also designed and built much of the spray equipment.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Donna Paul, Medford; a brother, Bill Keene, Sun City, Calif.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary, Medford. A family viewing will be held after 9 a.m. Friday at Hillcrest.

Mary Edna Hogge

Mary Edna Hogge, 96, of Medford, died Tuesday (Sept. 5, 2000) at a local foster care home. The service will be held later in Virginia.

Memorial contributions may made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born June 6, 1904, in Gloucester, Va.

In January 1929, in Gloucester, Va., she married Leonard W. Hogge, who preceded her in death. She moved to the Rogue Valley two years ago from Gloucester, Va.

Mrs. Hogge was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Baptist church, and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving six terms as chaplain.

Mrs. Hogge enjoyed gardening, cooking and Bible study.

Survivors include a son, Donald L., Medford; a daughter, Shirley F. Elswick, San Diego; two brothers, Wilbur Rowe, Newport News, Va., and Elmer Rowe, Hampton Rhodes, Va.; two sisters, Senora Green and Zelda Dunston, both Gloucester, Va.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Rowe; and two brothers, Herman and Hansford Rowe.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Ernest George La Belle

The funeral Mass for Ernest George La Belle will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Liam Cary will officiate. Rev. Bill McDonald of the First United Methodist Church of Medford will give the eulogy.

Mr. La Belle, 83, of Medford, died Sunday (Sept. 3, 2000) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born May 27, 1917, in Bad Axe, Mich., a son of George and Rose (Desjardiners) La Belle.

In 1961, he married Dorothy Henessey, who died in 1988.

On June 7, 1997, in Laughlin, Nev., he married Mary Rose Gray, who survives.

Mr. La Belle owned and operated a moving and storage business in Encinitas, Calif. After he sold the business, he obtained a contractor’s license and worked in the construction industry until his retirement. As a hobby, he built a custom castle home for actor Jack Klugman. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1990 from Fallbrook, Calif.

He enjoyed fishing, playing golf, gardening and woodworking, especially making rocking horses and doll houses.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include six daughters, Rose Wasco, Radnor, Pa., Tina Paine and Mary Wilson, both Fallbrook, Calif., Debbie Postum, Anza, Calif., Angie Wilks, Golden Valley, Ariz., and Carol Giovanini, Beaverton; five sons, Dan La Belle, Blythe, Calif., Mike La Belle, Fallbrook, Calif., Steve Gray, Sunriver, George Gray, Vancouver, British Columbia; and Roy Gray, Walterville; two brothers, Joseph and Wilfred, both in Michigan; 31 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters.

Veda Elvira Gossler

The memorial service for Veda Elvira Gossler will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, in the Rogue Valley Manor Auditorium.

Mrs. Gossler, 99, of Medford, died Saturday (Sept. 2, 2000) at Rogue Valley Manor.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Health Center, Rogue Valley Manor, 1200 Mira Mar, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Dec. 16, 1900, in Mason City, Iowa. She completed two years of college.

In 1925, she married Walter Gossler, who died in 1965.

Mrs. Gossler was a school teacher in Deerlodge, Mont., Vaughn, Ore. and in Springfield. She also worked as a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years, retiring in 1965. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Springfield about 1983. She had lived in Grants Pass for five or six years before moving to Medford.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma for teachers and the University of Oregon Alumni Association.

Mrs. Gossler enjoyed traveling and went around the world twice.

Survivors include a son, Walter, Portland; two daughters, Anna Spores, Medford, and Nada Lemmen, Olympia, Wash.; two sisters, Geneva Johnson, Sun City West, Ariz., and Ruth Gilbertson, Viroqua, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.
