Carl G. Harris

The graveside service for Carl G. Harris will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland. The Elks Lodge will officiate.

Mr. Harris, 83, a lifelong resident of Ashland, died Wednesday (Aug. 23, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Elks National Foundation, c/o Ashland Elks Lodge No. 944, P.O. Box 569, Ashland, OR 97520.

He was born June 24, 1917, in Ashland, a son of Carl H. and Fay L. (Loomis) Harris. He grew up in the Railroad District, and graduated from Ashland High School in 1935.

In 1938, in Mountain Park, Okla., he married Juanita L. Golding, who died in 1986.

Mr. Harris was a locomotive engineer for Southern Pacific Railroad, retiring after 36 years. He had also worked at the Ashland Groceteria as a butcher, at Bryant’s Shell and at Lithia Motors.

He is a 57-year life member of Ashland Elks Lodge No. 944, and a Master Mason of the Ashland Masonic Lodge N. 23 for more than 25 years.

Mr. Harris was an avid bargain hunter who enjoyed fishing, hunting and trap shooting.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Englund, Ashland; a son, Steven Harris, Ashland; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home & Crematory, Ashland.

Edith H. Merit

The memorial service for Edith H. Merit will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Salvation Army in Medford. Private entombment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Merit, 83, of Central Point, died Thursday (Aug. 24, 2000) in Central Point.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1207, Medford, OR 97501, or the American Diabetes Association, 380 S.E. Spokane St., Suite 110, Portland, OR 97202.

She was born Edith Hannah Hunter on April 25, 1917, in Barrow-in-Furness, England. Her family moved to the United States in 1928. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1945.

On Oct. 17, 1947, she married Thomas Earl Merit, who died in 1972.

Mrs. Merit was a bookkeeper for the Salvation Army in Medford.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 6881 in Shady Cove for 30 years.

Survivors include a son, Dennis W., Gresham; two brothers, Maj. Wilford Hunter, El Paso, Texas, and Leslie Hunter, Tucson, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers and a sister.

Clyde Stanley Bernhardt

The memorial service for Clyde Stanley Bernhardt will be at 3 p.m. today in Hillcrest Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Bernhardt, 93, of Medford, died Wednesday (Aug. 23, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born June 13, 1907, in Santa Ana, Calif., a son of Conrad and Francis (Criddle) Bernhardt.

He was married to Alice Prather for 42 years.

In 1975, he married Ann, who survives.

Mr. Bernhardt worked at Union Oil Co in California for 42 years. He moved to Medford in 1973.

He also served as mayor of Lomita, Calif. and as president of the League of California Cities which encompassed 88 cities.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Clyde Jr.; a daughter, Joyce Bernhardt; three children, Won Kil, Won Mi, and Won Tae; a brother, Ralph; and a half-sister, Charlotte; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Teddi Anna Garvey

The Holy Mass for Teddi Anna Garvey will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Carmelo Mifsud will officiate.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

Mrs. Garvey, 46, of Medford, died Monday (Aug. 21, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 15, 1953, in Salt Lake City.

On Sept. 5, 1987, in Bullhead, City, Ariz., she married Arthur Warren Garvey, who survives. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1989 from Bullhead City, Ariz.

Mrs. Garvey watched over neighborhood children and was an assistant block captain.

She enjoyed camping and shopping at the Goodwill.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Shannel Mesta, LaVawn Serna and Jasmine Anna Garvey, all Medford; a son, Shilo Martinez, Salt Lake City; her mother, Minnie Murphy, West Valley Jordon, Utah; two sisters, Vickie Bollon-Jones and LaRaine Smith, both Salt Lake City; and 16 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Calibur Matthew Garvey, in 1987; a sister, Rexeine Leatherwood Bryant, in 1992; and her father, Kenneth Rex Leatherwood.

Friends may pay their respects from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.

Virginia ‘Genny’ Truby

Virginia "Genny" Turnbough Truby, 63, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (Aug. 19, 2000) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

She was born May 5, 1937, in Phoenix, a daughter of Vernon Henry "Bill" and Thelma Inez (Emmons) Turnbough. She attended school in Phoenix.

Ms. Truby worked as a ranch caretaker for three historical ranches, Ocean House and Fort Baker in California and Riverbanks Mint Farm in Grants Pass.

With her Native American heritage, she enjoyed weaving pine needle baskets. She also enjoyed the company of her dog, Sally, knitting, crocheting, and raising flowers.

Survivors include two sons, Otis Blankenship III, Grants Pass, and Bryce Blankenship, Jacksonville; a daughter, Myrna Osbourn, Killeen, Texas; a brother, Glade Turnbough, Seattle; two sisters, Georgia Blankenship, Medford, and Myrna Bradley, Medford; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Lott; and a sister, Valerie Dunn.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Albert O. ‘Yogi’ Helms

Albert O. "Yogi" Helms, 82, of Medford, died Friday (Aug. 18, 2000) at his home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Adult Daycare, 999 Spring St., Medford, OR 97501, or to Providence Community Health Foundation Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born April 15, 1918, in La Grande, a son of William and Lillian Helms. He attended school in Elk Creek and Central Point and lived in Oregon all his life.

Mr. Helms was a journeyman carpenter for the Civilian Conservation Corps.

He was a member of the Eagles, the American Legion and the Moose Lodge.

Mr. Helms enjoyed music, visiting friends and family, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include three sons, Alan and Gary, both Medford, and Brett, Kennewick, Wash.; two daughters, Janice Yurs, North Bonneville, Wash., and Brandi Lazzarini, Salem; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.

Arrangements: Southern Oregon Cremation Services Inc., Grants Pass.

Carey W. Thomson III

The memorial service for Carey W. "Bill" Thomson III will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, at Fuller Funeral Home, 1625 Pine Ridge Road, Naples, Fla.

Mr. Thomson, 67, formerly of Medford, died Friday (Aug. 18, 2000) in Bonita Springs, Fla.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Oct. 16, 1932, a fourth-generation Oregonian and a descendent of a fur trapper and mountain man who came to Oregon in the 1830s. His great-grandfather, Carey Thomson Sr., developed what is now known as the McKenzie River drift boat. Carey Thomson Sr. and his sons ran Thomson’s Lodge on the McKenzie River and guided fly fishing river trips for such famous people as George S. Patton and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Mr. Thomson grew up in the car business. In the 1940s, his father owned Rogue River Chevrolet, now known as Airport Chevrolet.

He attended North Medford High School and played football for the Black Tornado team. He graduated from Washington State University.

Mr. Thomson retired from General Motors Corp. Pontiac Division in 1993, after 35 years as part of the General Motors top 20 management team.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and finished his service as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Thomson served on the Board of Directors for the Pelican Landing Community Association and as chairman of the Owners Committee in Bonita Springs, Fla.

Survivors include his wife, Georgia, Bonita Springs, Fla.; three sons, Donald, Medford, Scot, Kelso, Wash., and Daniel, Mount Arlington, N.J.; two daughters, Suzanne Bjork, Spokane, Wash., and Janette Herring, Boulder, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements: Fuller Funeral Home, Naples, Fla.
