Joseph Francis Carlos

The graveside service for Joseph Francis Carlos will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford. The Rev. V. Lee Gregory of the Neighborhood Church in Medford will officiate.

Mr. Carlos, 86, of Central Point, died Sunday (July 16, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Home Health, 691 Murphy Road, Suite 236, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Sept. 7, 1913, in Salinas, Calif., a son of Joseph and Mary Carlos.

On Feb. 15, 1943, in Reno, Nev., he married Elizabeth K. Sullivan, who survives.

Mr. Carlos was a supervisor in the Naval shipyards in the Bay Area. After moving to the Rogue Valley in 1945, he worked as a dryer tender for Timber Products until his retirement in 1986.

He attended the Catholic church.

Mr. Carlos enjoyed his family, attending his granddaughter’s Little League baseball games, trips to the coast and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Betty Sellars, Central Point, and Joann Fagan, Medford; a brother, Tony, Chico, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill; a sister, May Carlos; and a great-grandson in 1992.

Orville Otto Caster

The graveside service for Orville Otto Caster will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. The American Legion Honor Guard will provide military honors. The memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Idle Wheels Mobile Home Estates recreational hall, 2252 Table Rock Road, Medford. The Rev. Jeff Holden will officiate.

Mr. Caster, 85, of Medford, died Monday (July 17, 2000) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gospel Mission, P.O. Box 1172, Medford, OR 97501, or the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1207, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born July 14, 1915, in Central Point, a son of John T. and Effie J. (Edsall) Caster. He was a descendent of two Southern Oregon pioneer families and lived in the Rogue Valley his entire life.

On June 19, 1943, in Medford, he married Velma Mae Newton, who survives.

Mr. Caster was a truck driver for 24 years. He earned the million-mile safety award and retired in 1978. He also drove for Call-A-Ride for many years.

During World War II, he served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Caster was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Medford, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the White City Historical Society.

He enjoyed traveling, camping, hunting and golf.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, Kim S., Central Point, Chester "Chet, " Grants Pass, Terry J., Brookings, and Bart R., Orland, Calif.; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bert, in 1996.

DeWayne ‘Spick’ Spickler

The memorial service for DeWayne "Spick" Spickler will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grants Pass. Pastor Don Carlson will officiate. Private interment will be at the Masonic Cemetery.

Mr. Spickler, 76, of Grants Pass, died Monday (July 17, 2000) at Three Rivers Community Hospital, Dimmick Campus.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Josephine County Boys & Girls Club, 203 S.E. Ninth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

He was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Lansing, Kan.

On Nov. 18, 1972, he married Marjorie Tressel, who survives.

Mr. Spickler served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in Europe and the South Pacific, and with the U.S. Air Force for 21 years, retiring in 1964.

He then built a career in high-tech manufacturing with Sylvania Oximetrix and Braegen Corp. in the Silicon Valley in California. After moving to Grants Pass from Los Gatos, Calif., in 1978, he established IMI in White City. He and his wife also owned and operated Schneeman Electronics and City Center Center Plaza in Grants Pass.

Mr. Spickler was involved in many local civic groups, including the Boy & Girls Club and Rotary. In 1982 he was honored with the Glenn Jackson Memorial Award for his efforts in promoting economic improvement in the community.

He enjoyed working outdoors and always had a project going at home or for a friend or family member. He enjoyed Grants Pass and people.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Nancy Wild, Grants Pass; a son Steve, Camarillo, Calif.; four stepchildren, Gary, Grant, Greg and Gail Tressel; two brothers, Ray, Grants Pass, and Jimmie, Dublin, Calif.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard.

Nicholas ‘Nick’ Jensen

The Mass of Christian Burial for Nicholas James "Nick" Jensen will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Anne Catholic Church in Grants Pass. The Rev. John Cihak will officiate. A reception will follow at the church. Interment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Gardens, Medford.

Mr. Jensen, 20, of Grants Pass, died Friday (July 14, 2000) while swimming in the Illinois River.

Memorial contributions may be made to Josephine County Search and Rescue c/o Community Bank of Grants Pass, 1304 N.W. Sixth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

He was born July 27, 1979, in Corvallis. He graduated from North Valley High School in Grants Pass, where he was a member of the varsity wrestling team in his freshman years and the varsity soccer team in his senior year. He also helped produce the school’s yearbook.

Mr. Jensen was the assistant manager of the Rogue River boating operation at the Galice Resort for the last four years. Before that, he worked for the Extreme Board Shop in Grants Pass.

He was attending Southern Oregon University and was interested in environmental education.

Mr. Jensen enjoyed mountain biking, snowboarding, the river and fishing.

Survivors include his grandparents, Suzanne Jensen, Folsom, Calif., Charles and Linda Gorham, Palisade, Minn., and Betty and Howard Quinton, Grants Pass; his father and stepmother, Keith A. and Joanie Jensen, Grants Pass; his mother, Jana Jensen, Medford; a sister, Julie Jensen, Tacoma, Wash.; a brother, Colin Jensen, Medford; two stepbrothers, Thomas and Ryan Peterson, both Grants Pass; and a stepsister, Kristina Peterson, Grants Pass.

Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by a gathering from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass.

Roger R. Soulagnet

The graveside service for Roger R. Soulagnet will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Soulagnet, 72, of Medford, died Sunday (July 16, 2000) at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.

He was born June 1, 1928, in Ozone Park, N.Y., a son of Leon and Camille (Rudnick) Soulagnet. He attended Gate of Heaven School in Ozone Park, N.Y.

On Dec. 18, 1946, in Frankenberg, Germany, he married Marie Helena Nau, who survives.

Mr. Soulagnet retired from quality control with Republick Aviation in Farmingdale, N.Y. He moved to Medford in 1988.

He served in the U.S. Army as a supply sergeant and with the military police from 1946 to 1952.

Mr. Soulagnet enjoyed reading and was a master of quiz shows, especially "Jeopardy."

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Lanore Soulagnet, Medford; a son, Roger Jr., Lindenhurst, N.Y.; a brother, Joseph Soulagnet, Portland; a sister, Isabel Askins, Westbury, N.Y; and two grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Avis M. Drieschman

The memorial service for Avis M. Drieschman will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Juanipero Way in Medford. Bishop Gary Vanderhoff will officiate. Interment will be in Phoenix Cemetery.

Mrs. Drieschman, 78, of Medford, died Friday (July 14, 2000) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 9320 S.W. Barbur Blvd., Suite 140, Portland, OR 97219-5481, or to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Medford First Ward, 2900 Juanipero Way, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Avis May on June 12, 1922, in Los Angeles.

On Feb. 10, 1973, in Inverness, Marin County, Calif., she married Donald Frederick Drieschman, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Drieschman worked for the Department of Health and Human Services in Marin County, Calif., for 15 years. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1984.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Medford First Ward.

Mrs. Drieschman dedicated her life to the LDS church, her family and her friends.

Survivors include her children, Rebel Armantrout, Phoenix, Jock Alexander, New Orleans, Kaaren Gann, Yountville, Calif., and Scott Drieschman, Grants Pass; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Helen Marie Besack

The funeral for Helen Marie Besack will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lundberg’s L.B. Hall Funeral Home in Grants Pass. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Grants Pass.

Mrs. Besack, 86, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (July 16, 2000) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Employee’s Fund, c/o Providence Community Health Foundation, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504-5567.

She was born Feb. 24, 1914, in Frankfort, Kan., a daughter of Laurence and Kate (Mackey) Horrigan. In Kansas, she worked in a Topeka hospital for four years to become a nurse.

On Dec. 23, 1947, in Whittier, Calif., she married Maurice "Morris" T. Besack, who survives. They moved to Grants Pass in 1950 from Whittier, Calif.

Mrs. Besack was a nurse. Locally, she worked at Josephine County Hospital.

She and her husband entered vegetables, stock and poultry in the Josephine County Fair each summer and earned 40 blue ribbons.

Mrs. Besack was president of the Grants Pass Chapter of the National Federation of Grandmothers Clubs. Due to her efforts and those of other club members, Grandmother’s Day is celebrated annually the second Sunday of October.

An avid antique collector, she had the horsedrawn plow her father had used on the family farm in Kansas, which she recently gave to her grandson.

Mrs. Besack enjoyed traveling, dancing, horse racing and reading books and periodicals.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Jay H. Davison, Covina, Calif.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lou Ann Bowles, in 1997; and two sisters, Louise Templeman, in 1991, and Kathryn Bammer, in 1998.
