Bobby Lee Hiatt

The graveside service for Bobby Lee Hiatt will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. The Rev. Gary Ross of the United Methodist Church in Oregon City will officiate.

Mr. Hiatt, 64, of Medford, died Saturday (June 17, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501, or the Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 691 Murphy Road, Suite 236, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born May 24, 1936, in Mount Airy, N.C., a son of Ashby and Maude (Belton) Hiatt.

On Aug. 10, 1957, in Corvallis, he married Joyce Ella Skutley, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1993 from Milwaukie

Mr. Hiatt was a heating and air conditioning equipment salesman for Albina Wholesale Co. for 21 years, retiring May 1, 2000.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Hiatt was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Medford and the American Legion.

He enjoyed his home, family and friends.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Ron, Oregon City, Steven, Beaverton, and Michael, Gladstone; three brothers, Raymond, Tucson, Ariz.; G.W., Memphis, Tenn., and Edsel, Clayton, N.C.; three sisters, Marie Johnson, Doris Vernon and Joann Gammons, all Mount Airy, N.C.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold and Arlyss, and one sister, Lucille Hiatt.

Marion E. Achterman

The memorial service for Marion E. Achterman will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Medford.

Ms. Achterman, 85, of Jacksonville, died Saturday (June 17, 2000) in Medford.

She was born July 3, 1914, in Sioux County, N.D., and grew up in Eugene.

Ms. Achterman worked for Southern Pacific Railroad in San Francisco for many years. Later, she worked as a travel agent in San Francisco. She ended her business career as a stock broker in San Francisco.

Survivors include a brother, Walter. She was preceded in death by three siblings.

George Eugene Pollock

The funeral for George Eugene Pollock will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Red Lodge, Montana. Interment will be in Red Lodge Cemetery in Red Lodge, Mont.

Mr. Pollock, 87, of Medford, died Sunday (June 18, 2000) at his daughter’s home in Medford.

He was born Sept. 7, 1912, in Washoe, Mont., a son of Guy and Margaret (Evans) Pollock. He received a master’s degree.

On Sept. 7, 1933, in Livingston, Mont., he married Lorraine M. Lyons, who survives.

At the time of his retirement in 1975, Mr. Pollock was the director of medical administration for the Veteran’s Administration. Prior to that he had worked in hospital administration for more than 40 years for the Veterans Administration and had served as national field director for the Red Cross.

After his retirement, he served on a volunteer basis as Washington state director for the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) from 1983 to 1986, and as assistant director from 1979 to 1982. He moved to Oregon from Lynnwood, Wash., in 1997.

During World War II, he was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Pollock was an avid square dancer and round dancer.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Robert D., Medford; a daughter, Linda Hawk, Medford; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth, in 1953; and a granddaughter in 1986.

Everett ‘E.C.’ Burgess

The memorial service for Everett "E.C." Burgess will be at 4 p.m. today at the Assembly of God Church, 140 Mill Creek Drive in Prospect. Interment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Burgess, 76, of Trail, died Thursday (June 15, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born on March 2, 1924, in Haggerstown, Ind., a son to Porter and Mary Jane Burgess. He moved to Oregon in 1994.

On Jan. 22, 1944, at Inglewood, Calif., he married Audrey McDevitt, who survives.

Mr. Burgess served in the U.S. Army and worked in the aerospace industry.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking and working in his church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, Chuck Burgess of Winnetka, Calif., Benny Burgess of Medford, Gary Burgess of Canyon Lake, Calif., and Wayne Burgess of Bakersfield, Calif.; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-randchildren and one great- great-grandchild.

Georges Battye

The memorial service for Georges Battye will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Father Liam Cary of Sacred Heart Catholic Church will officiate.

Mr. Battye, 73, of Medford, died Friday (June 16, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Southern Oregon Humane Society, 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford OR 97501.

He was born Aug. 16, 1926, in Belgium, a son to Jules and Ivy Battye. He moved from Lexington, Ky., to the Rogue Valley in 1977.

On Sept. 6, 1952, in Williamsburg, Va., he married Doris Costello, who survives.

Mr. Battye retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. He was a life member of the DVA and a past member of the Jacksonville Masonic Lodge as a 32-degree Mason. He was also a member of the Rogue Valley Country Club, the YMCA and the Moose Lodge.

He enjoyed animals, golf and swimming.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Kim Pratt of Townsend, Wash., and a son, Michael Battye of Reno, Nev.

Charles Franklin Martin

The memorial service for Charles Franklin Martin will be at 3 p.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Eagle Point. Pastor Ron Norris will officiate.

Mr. Martin, 70, of Jacksonville, died Friday (June 16, 2000) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Oregon Humane Society, 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Aug. 28, 1929, in Portland, a son of Charles Joseph and Lynna Florence (Mills) Martin. He attended Klamath Union High School and Willamette University in Salem.

On June 16, 1951, in Medford, he married Jeanne Rice, who survives. He moved to Rogue Valley from Yoncalla in 1955.

Mr. Martin was a music teacher, first in Yoncalla, and then for 23 years with Eagle Point schools. At Eagle Point High School, he started the first marching band on the football field and in 1972 he took the choir to Europe.

From 1976 to 1994, he owned and operated the Central Point Liquor Store.

Mr. Martin was a past member of the Eagle Point Lion’s Club and the Medford Elks Lodge.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.

Mr. Martin enjoyed watching TV, fishing, traveling and being with his grandchildren.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Dayn Charles, Central Point, and Jeffrey Rice, Springfield; two daughters, Margaret Lynn Prier, Jacksonville, and Karen Ann Fletcher, Creswell; a sister, Betty R. Akerill, Ashland; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Viola Ruby Hall

Viola Ruby Hall, 85, of Vancouver, Wash., formerly of Medford, died Wednesday (June 14, 2000) in Vancouver. A private service will be held in Vancouver. Private interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

She was born Viola Anderson on Jan. 23, 1915, in Puyallup, Wash.

On May 8, 1937, she married Glenn Hall, who died in 1998.

Mrs. Hall was a secretary at Rogue Valley Manor, retiring in 1977. She lived in Medford until 1995, when she moved to Vancouver.

She was a member of the Nazarene Church.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald and Richard, both Vancouver; two brothers, Eugene Burns Anderson, Puyallup, and Leslie Harris Anderson, Seattle; three sisters, Doris Evelyn Forke, Mesa, Ariz., Ruth Lillian Anderson, Texas, and Margerie Winslow, Portland; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Ross-Hollywood Chapel, Portland.
