Frederick B. Boynton

The memorial service for Frederick Bruce Boynton will be at 4 p.m. today at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

Chaplain Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice will officiate.

Mr. Boynton, 63, of Medford, died May 2, 2000, at his home.

He was born Feb. 3, 1937, in Alamosa, Colo., a son of Bruce Morse and Evelyn Elizabeth (Eneril) Boynton.

Mr. Boynton worked in building maintenance for the state of Alaska and at the Rogue Valley Mall in Medford.

He moved to the Rogue Valley from Juneau, Alaska in 1989.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960.

Mr. Boynton was a member of Elks Lodge No. 431 in Juneau, Alaska.

Survivors include his mother, Evelyn Boynton, Apache Junction, Ariz.; two brothers, James, Skagway, Alaska, and Kenneth, Apple Valley, Calif.; two sisters, Sylvia O'Daniel, Skagway, Alaska, and Charlotte Boynton, Ballard, Wash.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.

Earl Alvin Boling

The memorial service for Earl Alvin Boling will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mentzer Hall at Crater Rock Museum, 2002 Scenic Ave., Central Point.

Pastor Mark Anderson of Ashland Christian Fellowship will officiate.

Inurnment will be in the Central Point Mason Cemetery.

Mr. Boling, 73, of Medford, died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Gospel Mission, P.O. Box 1172, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born March 31, 1928, in Phoenix, a son of Ray and Vinal Boling.

On Dec. 19, 1956, in Stockton, Calif., he married Lucille Williams, who died in 1988.

He was a lifetime resident of the Rogue Valley.

Mr. Boling was a logging and commercial truck driver.

He was also a driver’s education instructor at Crater High School for many years, retiring in 1989.

He served in the Merchant Marine from 1943 to 1953.

Mr. Boling attended Ashland Christian Fellowship.

He enjoyed the outdoors, life, his family and his dog.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Jones, Central Point; a son, James Higinbotham, Medford; a brother, Floyd Boling, Cave Junction; a sister, Ethel Apodaca, Grants Pass; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson.

'Ren' Miller Ells

The chapel service for Renwick "Ren" Miller Ells will be at 1 p.m. today at Hillcrest Mortuary Chapel.

Darold Hutsell of Hope Christian Fellowship will officiate.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Ells, 85, of Jacksonville, died Thursday (May 4, 2000) at Hearthstone.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 691 Murphy Road, Suite 236, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born March 10, 1915, in Los Angeles.

On Aug. 17, 1969, in Reno, Nev., he married Virginia M. Hall, who died in 1998.

Mr. Ells worked for the Los Angeles Transit Line.

He was also a manager of the hardware department at Sears.

He was a member of the Masons, Warren Lodge No. 10 A.F.&A.M., in Jacksonville and was a ham operator.

Mr. Ells was a member of Hope Christian Church in Central Point.

Survivors include two daughters, Minda Johnson, Medford, and Julie A. Byron, Jamestown, N.D.; a son, James B., Bremerton, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister in 1999.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Fred Hoffer

The graveside service for Fred Hoffer will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mr. Hoffer, 88, of Medford, died Friday (May 5, 2000) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born Oct. 9, 1911, in Liman, S.D. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1943, from Porterville, Calif.

Mr. Hoffer owned and operated a lumber company.

He enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his companion; two daughters, Anna Hubbard, Eagle Point, and Marie Owens, Elko, Nev.; three stepdaughters, Debbie Banuelos, Medford, Velma Heater, Port Orford, and Audry Adams, Mountain Home, Ark.; two stepsons, Robert Little, in Kentucky, and Larry Little, California City, Calif.; a sister, Katie Wijehoski; a brother, Leonard, Talent; eight grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Henry; and a stepson, Aubrey Gething.

Friends may pay their respects from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Perl Funeral Home and Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Paul G. Bauer Sr.

Paul G. Bauer Sr., 88, of Los Osos, Calif., formerly of Medford, died Thursday (May 4, 2000) at his home after a long battle with cancer. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, Or 97501.

He was born Aug. 15, 1911, in Corvallis, where he graduated from high school in 1929.

He briefly attended Oregon State University, withdrawing due to the Depression.

In May 1937, he married Esther August McCulloch of Portland, who died in 1988.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1987.

Mr. Bauer worked in the Corvallis area until 1932, when he went to San Francisco and sailed to Hawaii on the MS Lurline.

In Hawaii, he worked in a shipyard refurbishing the container ship "Lanakai" to become a cannery ship in Alaska.

Mr. Bauer later was employed by the ship's owner as a crewman and cannery worker.

For the next two years he piloted the ship up the inside passage, across the Gulf of Alaska to Chignik in the Aleutian Islands.

In Hawaii, he also crewed with the sailing yacht "Kailua" from Honolulu to San Diego, in what was record time.

The Kailua was later used in the movie, "Hurricane."

After World War II, Mr. Bauer moved his family to Medford, where he worked as a manager for Bruce Bauer Lumber Co.

In 1966, they moved to San Carlos, Calif., where he continued to work for Bruce Bauer Lumber.

In 1976 the Bauers retired to Florence.

He recently moved to California from Florence to be with his family.

During World War II, he worked in a shipyard in Vancouver, Wash., building aircraft carriers.

Mr. Bauer was a lifelong member of the Elks Lodge. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and was a member of Hillah Shine Temple in Southern Oregon.

He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his companion, Hazel Mileski, Florence; two sons, Mike, Central Point, and Paul Jr., Los Osos, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

Arrangements: Los Osos Valley Mortuary and Memorial Park, Calif.
