Helen D. Deatherage

Helen Drummond Deatherage, 94, of Santa Barbara, Calif., formerly of Medford, died Jan. 5, 2000, in Vista Del Monte in Santa Barbara. A private service will be held in Santa Barbara.

She was born Helen Oberlies on June 14, 1905, in Lincoln, Neb.

In 1926, in Lincoln, Neb., she married Dr. Clarence Iiams Drummond of Medford, who was one of the founders of Rogue Valley Medical Center. He died in 1959.

In 1966, she married Floyd King Deatherage of Port Hueneme, Calif. He died in 1998.

Mrs. Deatherage was active in the Medford community from 1931 to 1956.

She was a member of the Book Club, P.E.O. and St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Cody, Naples, Fla., and Susan Grgich, Santa Barbara, Calif.; a son, David Malcom Drummond, Yelm, Wash.; a stepson, Gary Deatherage, Roseville, Calif.; sixteen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five sisters.

Arrangements: McDermott-Crockett Mortuary, Santa Barbara, Calif.

Irvine C. Schueller

The funeral for Irvine Casper Schueller will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Conference Center of Ashland Hills Inn. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery in El Cerrito, Calif.

Mr. Schueller, 86, of Ashland, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Central Oregon Health Care Center in Bend.

He was born Oct. 5, 1913, in Aptos, Calif., a son of Minnie Jewel and Casper Schueller. He was raised in Watsonville, Calif., and later lived in Albany, Calif.

On Feb. 20, 1937, in Berkeley, Calif., he married Dorothy H. Brockhurst, who survives.

Mr. Schueller operated Schueller Tile Company in Oakland for 25 years, retiring in 1977. He moved to Ashland in 1978.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, John R., Lafayette, Calif.; two daughters, Linda J. Ashmore, Seattle, and Wendy J. Pfister, Bend; a sister, Arlene Caissie, Tracy, Calif.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Naomi Ritchey.

Dennis Hill

The graveside service for Dennis W. Hill will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland. Ashland Elks Lodge 944 will officiate.

Mr. Hill, 95, of Ashland, died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

He was born Nov. 15, 1904, in the Quaker community of Rockville, Ill., a son of Pearl and Leslie Hill, and was raised in St. Joseph, Ill.

On June 9, 1929, in Hutchinson, Kan., he married Vera Young, who died in 1986.

Mr. Hill was a sign painter for the University of Illinois for 30 years. He moved to Ashland in 1965.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy, attached to Headquarters Squadron Fleet Air Wing II, commonly known as Hedron.

Mr. Hill enjoyed automobiles and fishing.

He was a member of the American Legion of St. Joseph, Ill., and a life member of the Elks Lodge of Champaign, Ill.

Survivors include a brother, Francis, Midwest City, Okla.

William E. Frake

William E. Frake, 86, of Medford, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Hearthstone. No service is planned.

He was born May 8, 1913, in Hartford, Conn.

On Sept. 24, 1938, in Glendale, Calif., he married Audrey King, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1948 from Glendale, Calif.

Mr. Frake owned Frake and Smith Paint and Wallpaper Store in Medford until 1969. He then became a real estate broker with his wife, and owned Frake Realty in Medford, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist.

Mr. Frake enjoyed oil painting, gardening and traveling.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, James R., Lake Oswego; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, William H., in 1994; and a grandson, in 1988.

Frank Joseph Strauss

The memorial service for Frank Joseph Strauss will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in North Bend Chapel. The Rev. Eric V. Kaelberer of Christ Lutheran Church will officiate. Inurnment was in Rosewood Cremations Gardens at Sunset Memorial Park, Coos Bay.

Mr. Strauss, 84, of North Bend, formerly of Medford, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) in North Bend.

Memorial contributions may be made to South Coast Hospice, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay, OR 97420.

He was born June 12, 1915, in Leadville, Colo., a son of John and Johanna (Kochevar) Strauss.

Mr. Strauss was a meat cutter at Quality Market in Medford for several years. He moved to North Bend 21 years ago.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Strauss was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and the North Bend Senior Center.

He enjoyed woodcarving and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine, North Bend; a stepdaughter, Joanne White, North Bend; a brother, Joseph Paul, Denver, Colo.; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis; two sisters; and a brother.

Arrangements: North Bend Chapel.

David Cardwell Jr.

The funeral for David Cardwell Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Memory Gardens Mortuary in Medford. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Cardwell, 78, of Scio, formerly of Medford, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Albany Care Center in Albany.

He was born Feb. 7, 1921, in St. Joseph, Mo.

On Nov. 10, 1955, in Medford, he married Agnes Marie Milkowski, who survives. He lived in the Rogue Valley from 1940 to 1959.

Mr. Cardwell worked for the city of Medford in the public works department for 10 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Cardwell was a Scio City Council member. He was a past member of the Scio Lions Club and a member of the Lebanon Elks No. 1663.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Kenneth W. Cardwell, Redmond, Edwin David Cardwell, Albany, and Rodney Harp, Phoenix, Ariz.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gene; and a sister, Betty Holgate.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Jane L. Seaton

Jane L. Seaton, 96, of Eugene, formerly of Medford, died Dec. 30, 1999, in Eugene from pneumonia and age-related causes. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201, or to a favorite charity.

She was born Sept. 8, 1903, in Valdez, Alaska, a daughter of Harvey L. and Emma (Fuehrer) Leavell. She spent her early years in Alaska. After the death of her father in 1912, her mother remarried and the family moved to Medford in 1919. She graduated from high school in 1922 and from Southern Oregon Normal School in 1928.

On Oct. 30, 1926, in Coquille, she married Robert H. Creager, Coquille's chief of police, who died in 1948.

On June 8, 1963, in Brookings, she married Ernest A. Seaton, who survives. They moved to Eugene in 1963 and to Portland in 1968. In 1974 they moved to Los Angeles, returning to Newport in 1980. They returned to Eugene in 1997.

Mrs. Seaton was a teacher. She taught school in Tiller from 1922-23. In 1925, she moved to Coos County and taught school in Riverton. In 1959, she received a certificate of appreciation "in recognition of 22 years of devoted service to the public school children of Oregon" from the Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. and its constituent lodges. The certificated was presented by Chadwick Lodge 68 A.F. & A.M. Coquille.

Mrs. Seaton enjoyed traveling, homemaking and entertaining.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Carrol Ann Morgan, Medford; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Jean, in 1932; and a sister, Lurline L. Nordwick, in 1992.

Arrangements: Andreason's Cremation and Burial Service, Eugene.
