James A. Hardaway

The cryptside service for James Arville Hardaway will be at noon Monday in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford. Entombment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Hardaway, 82, of Medford, died Thursday (Nov. 25, 1999) in Medford.

He was born July 4, 1917, in Bethel, Okla. He lived in the Rogue Valley for 50 years.

On July 2, 1960, in Reno, Nev., he married Leta B. Wininger, who survives.

Mr. Hardaway was a machine operator with Boise Cascade for more than 20 years.

He was an avid golfer, and bowled on several bowling teams in the Rogue Valley. He also enjoyed fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Rick, White City, James D. "Tony," Gold Hill, and Gene, in Oklahoma; a daughter, Mary Lee Hardaway, in Oklahoma; three stepdaughters, Marilee Wininger, Medford, Carol Garrison, Central Point, and Eva Scott, Ashland; seven brothers, Barney, Pete, Raymond, Joe and Bill Hardaway, and Hayden and Zenus Sullivan, all in Oklahoma; five grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Halton Sullivan.

Homer Wallace Smets

The graveside service for Homer Wallace Smets will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Siskiyou Memorial Park. Pastor Lawrence Jung of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Mr. Smets, 80, of Central Point, died Wednesday (Nov. 24, 1999) at Hearthstone.

He was born Dec. 5, 1918, in Broken Bow, Neb. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1925 from Broken Bow.

On Nov. 9, 1968, in Reno, Nev., he married Kathlane Denton, who survives.

Mr. Smets worked for the Oregon State Board of Forestry for 30 years.

He was a member of Tilt Gardening Club and the Master Gardeners. He did gardens for the Jackson County Fair.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Randle, Medford, Homer W. Jr., Portland, and Richard, Los Angeles; two daughters, Sheila Jeffery, West Linn, and Martha Camgros, Troutdale; two sister, Arlene Olson, in Alaska, and Delores Gunter, San Francisco; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherron, in 1976.

Friends may pay their respect from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at Perl Funeral Services, Medford.

`Betty' Gertrude Burke

The memorial service for "Betty" Gertrude Mae Burke will be at 1 p.m. today in Scared Heart Catholic Church in Medford. The Rev. William Dillard will officiate. The graveside service will follow.

Mrs. Burke, 80, of Medford, died Wednesday (Nov. 24, 1999) at Medford Rehabilitation Center.

She was born April 19, 1919, in Olpe, Kansas, a daughter of Channey and Rose Marie (Oberdine) Lance.

Mrs. Burke was an auditor with Sears & Roebuck for 22 years in Glendale, Calif. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1989 from Cathedral City, Calif.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Friendship Club of Medford, and Sun Oaks Residential Community.

Mrs. Burke enjoyed quilting.

Survivors include her husband, Fleming Burke, Medford; two daughters, Sharon Morris, Grants Pass, and Carolyn Castle, San Ramon, Calif.; three sisters, Rose Ann Marchu, Vista, Calif., Arlene Jonkman, and Sandra Chamberlin, both Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Leon Lance, Shelter Cove, Calif., and Paul Lance, Palmdale, Calif.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary.

Nanette Norris Miller

The memorial service for Nanette Lynn Norris Miller will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Hubbard Community Church, Second and H Streets, Hubbard.

Ms. Miller, 47, of Newberg, formerly of Medford, died Nov. 18, 1999, in Newberg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Northwest Medical Teams, P.O. Box 10, Portland, Or 97027.

She was born Nov. 4, 1952, in Medford, a daughter of Paul and Adrienne Norris. She attended Crater High School and Portland Community College.

Ms. Miller worked at B & B TV in Woodburn.

Survivors include two sons, Christian Webster, and David Miller, both Newberg; and her mother, Adrienne Norris, Newberg.

Arrangements: Omega Crematory, Portland.

Richard Arthur Keene

The graveside service for Richard Arthur Keene will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Keene, 69, of Harbor, formerly of Medford, died Monday (Nov. 22, 1999) at his home.

He was born April 7, 1930, in Los Angeles. He lived in Medford for 11 years, before moving to Harbor in 1996.

Mr. Keene was a truck driver for most of his life.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Keene was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Medford Post No. 1833.

He enjoyed reading, camping and fishing.

Survivors include two sons, Scott, Ruch, and Rick, Brookings; a daughter, Tracey Keene, Brookings; a sister, June McMasters, Broken Arrow, Okla.; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives.

Carol E. Helferstine

Carol Elaine Helferstine, 54, of Rogue River, died Saturday (Nov. 20, 1999) at her home. The memorial service will be held later in Seattle.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Oregon Chapter, 117 S.W. Taylor, Portland, OR 97201.

She was born Carol Ellis on Jan. 8, 1945, in Seattle.

On July 26, 1962, in Seattle, she married Fred E. Helferstine, who survives. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Washington 16 years ago.

Mrs. Helferstine was a homemaker. Her faith and her family were very important to her.

She enjoyed painting and writing poetry.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Sarah Jean Helferstine, Portland, and Rita Lynn DelPriore, Eatonville, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary.

John George Tiedy

The funeral for John George Tiedy will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hillcrest Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow.

Mr. Tiedy, 88, of Medford, died Tuesday (Nov. 23, 1999) at Medford Rehabilitation Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born July 19, 1911, in Hubbard, Ohio, a son of Harry and Sarah (Griffeth) Tiedy.

On March 8, 1939, in Brookfield, Ohio, he married Geraldine Garris, who survives.

Mr. Tiedy was a painter in the construction industry, retiring from Disneyland in 1978. He moved to the Rogue Valley 12 years ago from Gardena, Calif.

He was a member of the American Baptist Church.

Mr. Tiedy enjoyed golfing and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, John and Owen, both Medford, and Richard, Camarillo, Calif.; a daughter, Fran Pashby, Cedar Falls, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Owen, in 1997.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary.
