Edith Jean Baggiore

Edith Jean Baggiore, 76, of Medford, died Thursday (Oct. 28, 1999) at her home. A private service is planned.

She was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Los Angeles, a daughter of John R. and Edythe C. (Mertz) Baggiore.

Mrs. Baggiore was a travel agent with American Express Travel.

Survivors include three sisters, Shirley Baggiore and Ruth Hastey, both Medford, and Beverley Weatherly, Ventura, Calif.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Inc., Medford.

Katherine M. Smith

The graveside service for Katherine M. Smith will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Parkview Cemetery, French Camp, Calif. Pastor Lonnie Perondis of Delta Lighthouse Full Gospel Church will officiate.

Mrs. Smith, 80, of Central Point, died Thursday (Oct. 28, 1999) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504 or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Katherine Smith on May 5, 1919 in Black Springs, Ark.

On July 19, 1938, in Britton, Okla., she married Roy Smith, who died in 1980. She moved to Stockton, Calif., in 1940, and to Central Point in 1991.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing and cooking.

Survivors include five sons, Howard W., Medford, Larry L., Valley Springs, Calif., Archie L., Superior, Mont., DeRosa N., Galt, Calif., and Roy D. Jr., Tacoma, Wash.; three daughters, Shirley R. Manson, Medford, and Carolyn K. Smith and Catherine K. Smith, both Stockton, Calif.; two brothers; four sisters; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grand-children; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sons.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care, Central Point.

Doris Eva Flynn

The funeral for Doris Eva Flynn will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hillcrest Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Flynn, 75, of Medford, died Wednesday (Oct. 27, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

She was born Doris Sims on Feb. 11, 1924, in Santa Clara, a daughter of Herbert Asa and Mary Josephine (Hurd) Sims. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Santa Clara in 1935, and to Central Point from Medford in 1954.

On Oct. 11, 1946, in Medford, she married Harold E. Flynn, who died in 1989.

Mrs. Flynn was a bookkeeper at Crater High School, District 6, for 20 years. In the early 1940s, she worked at Camp White, and later for the family business, Sims Cycle and Hobby Shop.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Pyke, Medford, and Suzanne Flynn, Portland; three brothers, Dale Sims, Portland, and Ray and Bill Sims, both Roseburg; a sister, Virginia Fogle, in Georgia; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Kenneth C. Sutherland

A celebration of the life of Kenneth C. Sutherland will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at Crater Rock Museum, 2002 Scenic Ave., Central Point.

Mr. Sutherland, 89, of Eagle Point, died Thursday (Oct. 28, 1999) at his home.

He was born June 17, 1910, in Knoxville, Tenn.

On Nov. 13, 1949, in Reno, Nev., he married Thelma Cummings, who survives.

Mr. Sutherland moved from California to Oregon in 1931, and operated a dairy farm in Grants Pass.

In 1951, in Talent, he began driving a log truck, cutting trees from his dairy farm and hauling them to Medford.

He then moved to Medford where he spent the next several years as an owner and operator of a logging truck business. During this time he helped remove logs from the area now known as Lost Creek Lake. He retired in 1976. In 1982, at the age of 72, he built a house in Eagle Point.

Mr. Sutherland was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and an active elk hunter through age 87. He enjoyed camping and telling stories around the campfire.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Earl Pidcock, Medford; a daughter, Evylan Statler, Eagle Point; two sisters, Blanche Martel, in California, and Loriane Foster, Los Angeles; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services, Medford.

Elsie M. Jerdine

Elsie M. Jerdine, 88, of Medford, died Friday (Oct. 29, 1999) at Farmington Square in Medford. A private family memorial is planned. Interment will be at Hawthorne Memorial in Grants Pass.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, 1660 E. McAndrews Road, Medford OR 97504.

She was born Elsie Henderson on March 7, 1911 in Walhalla, N.D.

On Oct. 28, 1944, in Maple Lake, Minn. she married Melvin Jerdine, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Jerdine grew up in North Dakota and Montana, and had lived in the Rogue Valley for seven years.

She received her teaching certificate from Valley City Teachers College, and later returned to earn her bachelor's degree in 1972.

She taught in North Dakota schools for 15 years, and in Oregon schools for another 15 years. She retired from the Josephine County School District in 1975.

She enjoyed her family, sewing, reading and traveling.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra MacLeod, Medford, and Ione Shaw, Gold Hill; two brothers, Harold Henderson and Allen Henderson, both of Forest Grove; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Jerdine was preceded in death by a sister.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary.

LaVerne Wegkamp

LaVerne Wegkamp, 91, of Medford, died Wednesday (Oct. 27, 1999) at her home. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

She was born LaVerne Brown on Sept. 23, 1908, in Campbellsburg, Ind. She grew up in Campbellsburg and attended business college in Indianapolis.

On Nov. 7, 1947, in Mill Valley, Calif., she married Karel Wegkamp, who survives.

Mrs. Wegkamp worked for the land department at Prudential in Indianapolis for several years until she enlisted in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps to serve in World War II.

After the war, she returned to Prudential for a short time. She then moved to San Francisco, where she began working for an import/export firm.

Following her marriage, Mrs. Wegkamp lived in Chicago and New Orleans before returning to California in 1968, where she and her husband operated a coin laundry business for five years. She retired to Santa Rosa in 1975, and moved to the Rogue Valley in 1990.

Mrs. Wegkamp was past president of her garden club in New Orleans.

She enjoyed golf and participated in several tournaments. She also enjoyed bowling and studying art, and was a portrait painter.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Anita Ramsbottom, Sidney, Australia; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, Loren and Alonzo Brown; two sisters, Olive Summa and Ethel Owsley; and one grandson.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services, Medford.

James B. Cawthon

The graveside service for James Burford Cawthon will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Eagle Point National Cemetery. Chaplain Jose Delgado of Providence Medford Medical Center will officiate.

Mr. Cawthon, 80, of Medford, died Wednesday (Oct. 27, 1999) at Hearthstone.

He was born May 3, 1919, in Brunswick, Ga.

On Jan. 8, 1945, in Santa Monica, Calif., he married Dorothy Olivera, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley 40 years ago from Santa Barbara, Calif.

Mr. Cawthon was a driller with Kellog Drilling. He worked in the oil fields off the California coast from 1947 until his retirement in 1962.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1937-45.

Mr. Cawthon was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion, and the National Rifle Association.

He was a sports enthusiast, an avid reader of nonfiction, and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Wendy Starling, Medford; three sons, Tommy Rusetos and Jimmy Cawthon, both Houston, and Barry Rusetos, Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister, Coralee Sullivan, Hayward, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death was a son, Sammy Rusetos, in 1993; a brother, Wilbur; and a sister, Louise Monroe.
