James Akira Urano

Services for James Akira Urano will be held at a later date in Denver, Colo.

Mr. Urano, 81, of Medford, died Saturday (July 17, 1999) at Medford Rehabilitation Center.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, 1425 N.E. Irving Suite 100, Portland, OR 97232.

Mr. Urano was born on Aug. 2, 1917 in Fort Lipton, Colo. He was a paratrooper during World War II, where he served with the U.S.

Army. He attained the rank of sergeant in the Army.

On Feb. 27, 1946 he married Mabel Ishiguro Urano, who survives.

He had 18 years of college. He traveled throughout the world with his family during his employment with the Department of Agriculture, where he served as an agricultural advisor. He moved from Virginia to the Rogue Valley in 1975.

He enjoyed golfing and was an avid gardener.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Alan Urano and R. Keith Urano, of Virginia; a brother, Henry Urano of Denver, Colo.; sisters, Mary Miyauchi and Alice Nishimoto of Denver, Colo.; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.Death notices Hester S. Javier Hester Salvage Javier, 77, of White City, died Friday (July 16, 1999) at her residence. Arrangements will be announced by Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care, Central Point.

Elizabeth Culmer

The memorial graveside service for Elizabeth Hazel Culmer will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Cemetery, Ashland. Father Brenden McAnerney of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church will officiate.

Mrs. Culmer, 92, of Ashland, died Saturday (July 17, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford.

She was born Elizabeth Neff on May 6, 1907 in Farley, Iowa. On June 24, 1931, in Webster City, Iowa, she married Clifford Culmer, who preceded her in death.

The pair moved to the Rogue Valley from Iowa in 1931. Mrs. Culmer worked as a telephone operator for Pacific Bell, retiring in the mid-1960s. She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland, a member of the Upper Valley Community Club in Ashland and a member of the Lady Elks. She enjoyed telling stories to her children and grandchildren and was interested in genealogy.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Neff Culmer of Ashland and Clifford "Pat" Culmer of Medford; a daughter, Carita Marie Culmer of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Catherine Pitts of Canoga Park, Calif.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and a great-grandchild.

Clark O'Dell

Private family services will be held for Clark O'Dell, former superintendent of the Yreka Union Elementary School District in Yreka, Calif.

Mr. O'Dell, 71, of Medford, died Friday (July 16, 1999) in Portland.

He was born on Sept. 29, 1927 in Los Angeles, Calif. On Sept. 3, 1949, he married Mary O'Dell, who preceded him in death.

Mr. O'Dell worked for the Siskiyou County school system from 1966 to 1983, retiring as superintendent of the elementary district, which includes three schools. He lived in Yreka until 1998, when he moved to Medford.

Mr. O'Dell was a member of the Masonic Lodge in San Francisco, Calif., and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include two sons, Gary B. of Beaverton and James R. of Boston, Mass.; a daughter, Jan M. of Portland; and two granddaughters.

Arrangements: Sunset Hills Mortuary, Portland.

Martha Winchell

The funeral for Martha Rebecca Winchell will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Chapel in Medford. A cryptside service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Winchell, 92, of Medford, died Friday (July 16, 1999) at Medford Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.

She was born Martha Dowty on June 29, 1907 in Center Point, Ark.

On Dec. 15, 1927, in Arkansas, she married William Winchell, who died in 1989.

She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1989 from Broken Bow, Okla. Mrs. Winchell was a homemaker who loved gardening, crocheting, reading and family. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Riley Winchell and Otis Winchell of Medford and Wilcey Winchell of Lebanon, Ore.; three daughters, Wilma McUne and Dewanda Hall of Medford and Marida Spencer of Sherwood, Ore.; 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two grandsons.

Friends may pay their respects from 1 to 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Chapel in Medford.

Arrangements: Central Valley

Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

June E. Hannaford

The memorial service for June E. Adams Hannaford will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. The Rev. Bill McDonald of the First United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge will officiate. Interment will follow in Trail Cemetery.

Mrs. Hannaford, 87, of Medford, died Friday (July 16, 1999) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504, or to a favorite charity.

She was born June Adams on June 2, 1912, in North Bend, a daughter of Milo and Martha Adams. She moved to the Rogue Valley from North Bend when she was 12.

On Dec. 7, 1929, she married James Hoskins. They later divorced.

On Sept. 30, 1967, in Grants Pass, she married Phillip C. Hannaford, who died in 1977.

Mrs. Hannaford worked in sales for Mann's Department Store, Montgomery Ward, Burlesons, La Points, Newberrys and other department stores. As a teenager, she worked as an usher for the Craterian and Holly Theaters.

She was also an artist, working with oils and ceramics.

Mrs. Hannaford was a member of the Olive Rebekah Lodge for 50 years.

She enjoyed singing, crocheting, animals and children.

Survivors include a daughter, Jean L. Loydon, West Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Vera Hannah, Eagle Point; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson; two brothers and two sisters.

Friends may pay their respects one hour prior to the service Tuesday at Conger-Morris Chapel, Medford.

Kimberly D. Gramento

The funeral for Kimberly Diane Gramento will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford. Chaplain John Braund of Providence Hospice will officiate. The graveside service will follow in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mrs. Gramento, 44, of Medford, died Wednesday (July 14, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Scleroderma Foundation, 89 Newbury St., Suite 201, Danvers, MA 01923.

She was born Kimberly Randle on June 2, 1955, in Albany, a daughter of Warren and Gloria Randle.

On Oct. 22, 1976, in Mississippi, she married Eric R. Gramento, who survives. She moved to the Rogue Valley three years ago from Stone Mountain, Ga.

Mrs. Gramento was the manager of Santa Fe Craftsman Jewelry Co., where she sold Navajo jewelry.

She enjoyed painting, reading, backpacking and riding motorcycles.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include her parents, Warren and Gloria Randle, Pascagoula, Miss.; a brother, Scott Randle, Pascagoula; and a sister, Carolyn Darney, Pascagoula.

Friends may pay their respects from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday in Memory Gardens Mortuary in Medford.

Geno Patrick Struglia

Geno Patrick Struglia, 73, of Shady Cove, died Thursday (July 15, 1999) in Medford. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 11, 1925, in Cortland, N.Y.

In 1983, in Nevada, he married Patricia Kleinfeldt, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1983 from San Jose, Calif.

Mr. Struglia was an electrician with Pacific Fire Alarm in San Jose for many years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Struglia was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the I.B.E.W. Union.

He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and mushroom hunting.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Ray J. Pages, Venice Beach, Calif., Gary Kleinfeldt, Lodi, Calif., and James Kleinfeldt, San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Gina Struglia, Kalgoolie, Australia, and Donna Rolls, San Francisco; a brother, Charles, Cipio Center, N.Y.; a sister, Angela Cooney, Coronado, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.
