James `Frank' Sanders

The memorial service for James F. "Frank" Sanders will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chadwick Lodge in Coquille. Jim Larkin will officiate. A reception will follow the service.

Mr. Sanders, 72, of Coquille, formerly of Grants Pass, died Tuesday (July 13, 1999) in Coos Bay.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born July 3, 1927, in Koshkonong, Mo.

On Sept. 18, 1946, in Medford, he married Delores "Dee" Chapman, who survives. He lived in Grants Pass for 21 1/2 years and had lived in Coquille since 1972.

Mr. Sanders retired from the Oregon State Police in 1982 after 31 1/2 years of service.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Sanders was a member of the Masonic Order, past master of Chadwick Lodge AF & AM and a grand lecturer of the Grand Lodge of Oregon/Scottish Rite.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, James Arnold, Milwaukie; a daughter, Cathy Peltier, Salem; and a brother, Jack, Portland.

Arrangements: Amling/Schroeder Funeral Service, Coquille.

Ernest Roy York

Ernest Roy York, 77, of Talent, died Wednesday (July 14, 1999) at Hearthstone. A private service has been held. Inurnment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

He was born Dec. 14, 1921, in Bremerton, Wash. He moved to the Rogue Valley 26 years ago from Sacramento, Calif.

Mr. York was a truck driver with Consolidated Freightways for 18 years, retiring in 1987.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and in the Air Force during the Korean War.

Mr. York was a member of the Elks Lodge in Mount Shasta, Calif.

He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and watching car races with his son.

Survivors include a son, John H., Eugene; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Verlin A. Bliss

Verlin A. Bliss, 76, of Molalla, formerly of Gold Hill, died Monday (July 12, 1999) in Oregon City. The memorial service was held July 15 at Wilhelm Funeral Chapel in Portland. Inurnment will be in Willamette National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born May 27, 1923, in Horton, Kan.

In 1942, in Nickerson, Kan., he married Edith Mae Hall, who survives.

Mr. Bliss retired from Witham Parts and Equipment in Medford.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Sue Cook, Barton; a brother, Richard, Hutchinson, Kan.; a sister, Joan Greathouse, Olathe, Kan; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Wilhelm Funeral Chapel, Portland.

Arthur Earl Gardner

The memorial service for Arthur Earl Gardner will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Mortuary. The Rev. Dorlan Woods of Phoenix Church of Christ will officiate.

Mr. Gardner, 82, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Medford and Prospect, died Monday (July 12, 1999) in Tucson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lions Sight and Hearing Center, 228 N. Holly, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Aug. 1, 1916, in Chickasha, Okla. He lived in the Medford and Prospect areas prior to his move to Fallon, Nev., in 1997.

In August 1942, in Boise, Idaho, he married Della Aileen Bishop, who died in 1998.

Mr. Gardner was a chief warrant officer in the U.S. Air Force for more than 30 years. He retired in 1967.

He volunteered with the Department of Human Resources Meals on Wheels program, the Prospect School District for six years and Crater Lake National Park for four years.

Mr. Gardner was a member of the Medford Lions Club and was past district governor from 1985-1986.

Survivors include two sons, Randy J., Tucson, Ariz., and Sgt. John Arthur, stationed in Bosnia with the U.S. Army; a daughter, Dena Horton, Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Clyde Gardner, Chickasha, Okla.; and two grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at Hillcrest Mortuary Chapel, Medford.

Luola Rehfeld

Luola Rehfeld, 91, of Eugene, formerly of Medford, died June 17, 1999, in Eugene. The memorial service was held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Eugene.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church Rector's Fund, P.O. Box 50428, Eugene, OR 97405-0980.

She was born July 29, 1907, in Lexington, a daughter of Ralph and Sarah Benge.

On Aug. 19, 1962, in Eugene, she married Lawrence Rehfeld, who died in 1998. Before moving to Eugene, she lived in Heppner and Medford from 1932 to 1951.

Mrs. Rehfeld earned a master's degree in counseling and worked as a teacher for 30 years. She also served as dean of girls at Sheldon High School.

She enjoyed painting, bridge and genealogy. She was a member of P.E.O. and Alpha Omega Phi sorority.

Survivors include a son, Brent Bengtson, Overland Park, Kan.; two daughters, Brenda Barrett, Springville, Tenn., and Hilda Bengtson, Salem; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Arrangements: England's Eugene Memorial Chapel.

Jeanne Marie Steele

The memorial service for Jeanne Marie Steele will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Harvest Baptist Temple in Medford. Pastor Bob Gass will officiate. Inurnment will be in Sterns-Wagner Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. Steele, 34, of Medford, died Monday (July 12, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 380 S.E. Spokane St., Suite 110, Portland, OR 97202.

She was born Jeanne Callender on Aug. 28, 1964, in San Diego, a daughter of William and Elaine Callender.

On Feb. 21, 1990, in Reno, Nev., she married Christopher Steele, who survives.

Mrs. Steele was a homemaker.

She was a leader in the local Take Off Pounds Sensibly group for two years.

Mrs. Steele enjoyed bingo and shopping.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Ember Jean Steele, Medford; her mother and stepfather, Elaine and Donald Butler, Medford; her father and stepmother, William H. and Matilda Callender, San Diego; a brother, William Henry Callender Jr., Phoenix; a sister, Jennifer Callender, San Diego; a grandfather, Willard Bowdoin, Grants Pass; and a grandmother, Ruth Callender, Central Point. She was preceded in death by a grandmother, Elma Bowdoin; and a grandfather, William R. Callender.

`Darlene' Nakooka

Mary "Darlene" Nakooka, 54, of Renton, Wash., formerly of Ashland, died Friday (July 9, 1999) in Renton, Wash. Memorial services were held in Federal Way, Wash., and Eugene. Interment was in Scenic Hills Memorial Park in Ashland.

She was born Mary Darlene Clements on March 7, 1945, in Brownfield, Texas, a daughter of Gus and Penelope Clements. She was raised in Ashland.

Mrs. Nakooka enjoyed animals and rehabilitated smaller animals.

Survivors include two sons, Alexander Guston Alika, and Daniel Kai Kaluwalu, both Seattle; a sister, Penny Villagomez, Medford; and two brothers, Marvin Clements, Klamath Falls, and Melvin Clements, Ashland.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

`Bus' McCollum Cavin

The graveside service for Rafelle "Bus" McCollum Cavin will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Henley-Hornbrook Cemetery, Hornbrook. The Rev. John Lawrence will officiate.

Mr. Cavin, 87, of Yreka, died Tuesday (July 13, 1999) at Beverly Manor Convalescent Hospital in Yreka.

He was born Oct. 8, 1911, in Hornbrook, Calif.

In 1931, in Medford, he married Alice E. Rose, who died in 1992.

Mr. Cavin worked for Fruit Growers Supply Co. in Hilt, Calif.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Cavin enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Marcia Cunial, Yreka; and two grandsons.

Arrangements: Girdner Funeral Chapel, Yreka.
