Astrid Rothrock

Astrid Rothrock, 54, of Prospect, died Monday (July 5, 1999) in Medford. No service is planned.

She was born Astrid Nelson on Dec. 21, 1944, in Lima, Peru. She moved to the Rogue Valley eight years ago from Los Angeles.

Ms. Rothrock was a bartender.

She enjoyed animals.

Survivors include a son, Lee Rothrock, Los Angeles; a brother, Floyd Nelson, Miami; and two grandchildren.

Nita Blakeway Birdseye led volunteer community actions

Longtime community activist Nita Blakeway Birdseye, 90, died Tuesday (July 6, 1999) at her home at the Rogue Valley Manor.

The memorial service will be Aug. 8 at First Presbyterian Church in Medford.

Birdseye, with the late Agnes Flanagan, started the Volunteers in Medford Schools program and was among the visionaries who met in the 1950s to discuss the possibility of establishing a continuing-care retirement home in the area. After the Rogue Valley Manor was created, she served on its first board of directors.

She was a lobbyist for programs in danger of being phased out by the county, including Home Extension.

"Home Extension helped me rear my children," Birdseye said in a 1995 interview, noting it taught her how to sew, budget money and provide a support system.

She was chairman of the committee seeking a juvenile detention home for the county; it was built in the 1950s.

She was a volunteer with the United Service Organizations and Red Cross during World War II and an organizer or board member of such programs as the Rogue Valley Family YMCA, Plowshares and Foster Grandparents. She was a volunteer for the Medford Visitors Center and Airport Information Center and was active at First Presbyterian Church.

In 1995, the Central Point Rotary Club made a $1,000 Paul Harris gift to Rotary International's foundation in her name for "tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among the peoples of the world."

She was born June 23, 1909, in Esparto, Calif., and later attended what is now Oregon State University.

Birdseye and her late husband, Victor, lived in the historic Birdseye house between Gold Hill and Rogue River. It was restored in the 1970s but burned in 1990.

The couple married June 16, 1930, in Esparto. Friends were astonished she married a farmer during the Depression, since she had never been on a farm in her life. The couple operated dairies in several parts of the county.

At church, she was a Sunday school teacher and youth and women's association leader. She was the third woman to become an ordained elder at First Presbyterian.

She was a member of Kappa Delta Gamma fraternity, an education honorary, and Oregon Historical Society.

She received her degree from what is now Southern Oregon University in 1956 and for 17 years taught at Howard School.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 85 S. Holly St., Medford, OR 97501.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Anne Doty, Nipomo, Calif.; a son, Victor Theodore "Ted" Birdseye, Ames, Iowa; a brother, Carman H. Blakeway, Foresthill, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ramona I. Tompkins

The memorial service for Ramona I. Tompkins will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Medford Southwest Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Don Farnsworth will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later time.

She was born Ramona Fox on Jan. 30, 1929, in Denver.

On Aug. 31, 1985, in Medford, she married Elmer E. Tompkins, who survives.

Mrs. Tompkins was a duplicating operator with the government.

She was a volunteer for the Salvation Army.

Mrs. Tompkins was a member of the Medford Southwest Church of the Nazarene.

She enjoyed crafts, sewing and socializing.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Toni Irving, Medford, Sharon Irving, Portland, and Shirley Garza, Richland, Wash.; and three brothers, Chester Fox, Richland, and Earl and Ronald Fox, both of Denver.

Orris `Swede' Funk

The funeral for Orris R. "Swede" Funk will be at noon Friday at Perl Funeral Home, Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mr. Funk, 80, of Shady Cove, died Monday (July 5, 1999) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born May 4, 1919, in Huntley, Neb.

On Oct. 24, 1942, he married Joyce Coomes, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988 from Costa Mesa, Calif.

Mr. Funk was a heavy equipment operator for the city of Newport Beach in California for 35 years.

He enjoyed square dancing, fishing, hunting and traveling in his motorhome.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Peggy Jahnke, Gold Hill, Judy Wehrli, Palm Desert, Calif., and Connie Dolinshek, Weimar, Calif.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dena Funk; and two sisters.

Violet Martha Jantzer

The graveside service for Violet Martha Jantzer will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Memory Gardens Memorial Park. The Rev. William H. Lehmann of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Medford will officiate.

Mrs. Jantzer, 82, of Medford, died Friday (July 2, 1999) at her home.

She was born Violet Keyser on April 6, 1917, in Kearney, Neb.

On March 6, 1980, in Reno, Nev., she married Frank S. Jantzer, who survives.

Mrs. Jantzer was a homemaker.

She enjoyed crocheting and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sisters, Fern Solomon, Medford, and Lilly McMahon, Spokane, Wash.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

`Al' Green

The graveside service for Alphia Dean "Al" Green will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Eagle Point National Cemetery. Bill Gouley, director of the Medford Gospel Mission, will officiate.

Mr. Green, 80, of Medford, died Saturday (June 3, 1999) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gospel Mission, 409 N. Front St., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Jan. 26, 1919, in Elkhart, Kansas. He lived in Klamath Falls from age 7 to 18, and in the Rogue Valley for the last two years.

On April 13, 1942, in South Bend, Wash., he married Adelle McDevitt, who survives.

Mr. Green was a groundskeeper for the state of California. He also worked for Med-Ply in Crescent City, Calif.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Green was a rockhound and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, John L., Medford, and Ed, Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Susanne Templeton, Springfield, Ill.; a sister, Agnes Hill, Dodge City, Kansas; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson; three sisters; and three brothers.

Dorothy L. Corveleyn

Dorothy L. Corveleyn, 94, of Phoenix, died Monday (July 5, 1999) at Three Fountains Nursing Center. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

She was born Dorothy Lawrence on Aug. 11, 1904, in New York City.

On July 6, 1942, in Plainfield, N.J., she married Christian H. Corveleyn, who died in February 1999. She moved to the Rogue Valley from San Diego in 1985.

Mrs. Corveleyn assisted her husband in their catering business, Corveleyn Catering, in San Gabriel, Calif.

She enjoyed gardening and needlepoint.

Deborah J. Edmondson-Hibbard

The graveside service for Deborah Jean Edmondson-Hibbard will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford. Edward E. Hanson, president of the Central Point Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will officiate.

Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Ms. Edmondson-Hibbard, 34, of Central Point, died Saturday (July 3, 1999) in a traffic accident near Eagle Point.

She was born Sept. 30, 1964, in Longview, Texas, and had lived in the Rogue Valley since 1980.

She owned and operated American Cruises, a travel agency.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was active in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

She enjoyed traveling and crafts of all kinds.

Survivors include her her grandmother, Dora Edmonson, Lone Star, Texas; mother, Carla Kinney, Medford; her stepfather, R.C. Kinney, Medford; her father, Jim Edmonson, Dangerfield, Texas; her stepmother, Barbara Edmondson, Dangerfield, Texas; two sisters, Terri Young, Tualatin, and Linda Archuletta, Vacaville, Calif.; two sons, James and Sam Hibbard, Central Point; a daughter, Annie Hibbard, Central Point; and her former husband, Burle Hibbard of Central Point.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Chuck Edmondson; her grandparents, David and Jeanette Misen-Himer; and her grandfather, Irvin Edmondson.
