Evelyn E. Arnett

Evelyn Elaine Arnett, 70, of Shady Cove, died Wednesday (April 28, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

She was born Evelyn Cook on Aug. 11, 1928, in Huntington Park, Calif. She moved to the Rogue Valley nine years ago.

Mrs. Arnett worked in sales for Ernst Hardware in Reno, Nev.

Survivors include her companion, Lloyd W. Aubrey, Shady Cove; two sons, Kevin Wayne Ekelman, Central Point, and William Fred Ekelman of Arkansas; a brother, Harold Cook, Whittier; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care, Central Point.

Wilbur H. Strait Jr.

The funeral for Wilbur H. Strait Jr. will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Ashland. Chaplain Jack Mount of the Oregon Fire Chiefs Association will officiate. Interment will follow in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.

Mr. Strait, 56, of Ashland, died Tuesday (April 27, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center, Medford.

He was born Sept. 23, 1942, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was raised in Fresno and Happy Camp, Calif., and graduated from Happy Camp High School.

Mr. Strait began his career in the fire service in Northern California at the age of 16. He moved to Ashland in 1966, where he continued his career in fire service.

Mr. Strait worked for the Ashland Fire Department for 21 years as an arson investigator and battalion chief. For the last five years he served as deputy state fire marshal for Southern Oregon. His efforts were instrumental in the formation of Ashland's Rescue 9.

He was a member of the Oregon Fire Marshals Association and the International Association of Arson Investigators.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen J., Ashland; two sons, Kyle and Kirk, both Ashland; and a daughter, Kristen, Ashland.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

M. Doris Farenhurst

The Mass of Christian Burial for M. Doris Farenhurst will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Beaverton. Private interment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Farenhurst, 86, of Beaverton, formerly of Medford and Ashland, died Wednesday (April 28, 1999) at a Beaverton foster care home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born M. Doris MacDonald on April 5, 1913, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She was a resident of Medford and Ashland until 1996 when she moved to the Portland area.

On Oct. 22, 1934, she married Fred Farenhust, who died in 1986.

Mrs. Farenhurst and her husband managed the Park Terrace Apartments for many years.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford.

Survivors include two daughters, Carole Christensen, Lake Oswego, and Joy Cunningham, Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Norma Decker, Tarzana, Calif.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Briton MacDonald.

Arrangements: Pegg, Paxson & Springer Chapel, Beaverton.

Byron `Y.T.' Craven

Byron "Y.T." Everett Craven, 67, of Gold Hill, died Wednesday (April 28, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center. A private service is planned.

He was born March 1, 1932, in Miles City, Mont. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Southern California in 1953.

Mr. Craven was a carpenter in the construction industry. He later worked as a building inspector for the city of Medford.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1953, during the Korean War.

Mr. Craven was a member of the shuffleboard team at Tolo, and enjoyed drawing and huckleberry picking.

Survivors include a daughter, Cassandra L. Miller, Gold Hill; a brother, James, Albany; and two sisters, Dorothy Simpson and Jean Pech, both Eagle Point. He was preceded in death by a son, Byron, in 1979.

Louise B. Hamilton

The memorial service for Louise B. Hamilton will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Rogue Valley Unitarian Fellowship in Ashland. Brad Carrier of Unitarian Universalist Ministries will officiate.

Mrs. Hamilton, 84, of Ashland, died April 16, 1999, at Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Endowment Trust Fund, 87 Fourth St., Ashland, OR 97520.

She was born Louise Bach on March 19, 1915, in Santa Monica, Calif.

On Feb. 25, 1936, in North Hollywood, Calif., she married Arthur M. Hamilton, who preceded her in death. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Santa Monica in 1936.

Mrs. Hamilton was a homemaker.

She and her husband were founding members of the Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Mrs. Hamilton was very active in many civic groups including the American Civil Liberties Union, The Fellowship of Reconciliation, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the League of Women Voters, and local women's and book discussion groups.

She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include three sons, Alan Roy, Phoenix, James David, Portland, and Lawrence Arthur, Buckley, Wash.; two daughters, Grace Anne Hamilton, San Francisco, and Lois Evelyn Hamilton, Santa Cruz, Calif.; two sisters, Genevieve Buchanan of Michigan, and Charlotte Wolfmueller of Texas; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services, Medford.

Margaret Roth Taft

Margaret Roth Taft, 84, of Wilsonville, formerly of Medford, died Tuesday (April 27, 1999) in Tualatin. A private family service will be held. Inurnment will be in Memorial Garden.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Margaret Roth on Nov. 5, 1914, in Fort Worth, Texas. She graduated from Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio.

In 1940, she married Dr. James W. Taft. She lived in Medford from 1969 to 1989. She moved to Wilsonville in 1989.

Mrs. Taft was a medical technologist and homemaker.

She was a member of the Daughters of the King. She was also a Girl Scout leader, and president of the school board and altar guild.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include five sons, Alan S., Portland, James W. Jr., and Richard H., both Little Valley, N.Y, Martin L., Longview, Texas, and John C., Beaverton; three daughters, Margaret Jessica Taft, Portland, Mary E. Ishida, Kapaa, Hawaii, and Barbara R. McKenna, Canby; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes, Portland.

Jennie Irene Cummins

The funeral for Jennie Irene Cummins will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Central Valley Chapel. The graveside service will follow at Central Point Masonic Cemetery. Pastor Henry Zollbrecht of Valley View Seventh-day Adventist Church will officiate.

Mrs. Cummins, 91, of Medford, died Tuesday (April 27, 1999) at Three Fountains.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Osteoporosis Foundation, Providence Medford Medical Center, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Jennie Rider on Nov. 20, 1907, in Galesburg, Mo.

On Dec. 25, 1927, in Galena, Kan., she married Jack Cummins, who died in 1953. She lived in Central Point from 1948 to 1953 and moved back to Medford in 1990.

Mrs. Cummins was a homemaker.

She was an active member of Valley View Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Mrs. Cummins enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, crafts and cooking.

Survivors include a daughter, Charleen Thomas, Central Point; a son, Don, Petersburg, Alaska; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Roscoe, Keith and Charlie Rider.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care.

Leona H. Cramer

Leona H. Cramer, 81, of Medford, died April 20, 1999, at Rogue Valley Medical Center. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Chapel Heights Cemetery in Marion, Ohio.

She was born on Sept. 6, 1917, in Marion, Ohio. She moved to the Rogue Valley in the early 1980s from California.

Mrs. Cramer was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Church of God and enjoyed singing, camping, sightseeing and bingo.

Survivors include two nieces, Beverly Brown, Westerville, Ohio, and Sandy Matheny of Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Cramer.

Mervin H. Shollenburg

The memorial service for Mervin H. Shollenburg will be at 6 p.m. today in the Medford Seventh-day Adventist Church. Pastor Don Pate of Phoenix, Ariz., will officiate.

Mr. Shollenburg, 80, of Medford, died Tuesday (April 27, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 30, 1918, in Viola, Idaho. He moved to Oregon in 1923.

Mr. Shollenburg graduated from high school at Laurel Wood Academy in Gaston and went on to Walla Walla College in College Place, Wash. He received a master's degree in real estate appraising from the University of Oregon in Eugene.

Mr. Shollenburg was supervisor for Southwestern Oregon at First Interstate Bank until his retirement in 1982.

He was a member of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers, Southern Oregon Chapter 134.

Mr. Shollenburg enjoyed the outdoors, especially Oregon's forests and coastlines.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth, Medford; four stepdaughters, Janice Johnston and Janette Chumley, both Medford, Karen Meisner, Las Vegas, and Jae Alpy, St. George, Utah; a sister, Velma Kellie, Redmond, Wash.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Tom Shollenburg.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.
