John 'Jack' Cook

A private service is planned for John "Jack" Milton Cook. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford.

Mr. Cook, 87, of Phoenix, died Saturday (April 10, 1999) at Hearthstone Manor, Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Aug. 16, 1911, in White Earth, N.D.

In 1936 in Chicago, he married Georgia H. Dorn, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1947.

They owned and operated Cooks Cafe & Fountain in Phoenix from 1951 to 1958, then he worked for Dumas Laundry in Medford until 1976.

He was a member of the board of the Phoenix Cemetery Committee.

Mr. Cook was a past president of the Phoenix Lions Club, having held that office several times. He was a 25-year member of the Medford Elks Lodge.

Mr. Cook enjoyed gardening, birdwatching and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Lewis, Phoenix, and Jack M. Jr., Wilsonville; a brother, Bates, Chicago; five grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Two sisters preceded him in death.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary.

Timothy Robert Beals

Timothy Robert Beals, 45, of Silver Springs, Nev., formerly of Eagle Point, died March 23, 1999 in Stagecoach, Nev. The service was held March 27 in the Silver Springs Christian Center.

He was born June 6, 1953, in Eugene. On June 10, 1972, in Windsor, Calif., he married Barbara Toombs, who survives. He lived in the Rogue Valley from 1972 to 1980.

Mr. Beals was a manager of Champion Pneumatics for 21 years, in White City and in Manteca, Calif. In Carson City, Nev., he was an assistant manager for Little Caesar's Pizza.

While living in the Rogue Valley, he attended the Eagle Point Assembly of God.

Mr. Beals enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his spouse, include a son, Jason, Modesto, Calif.; three daughters, Becky Williams, Rippon, Calif., Laurie Bram, Manteca, Calif., and Mindy Beals, Silver Springs, Nev.; his parents, Robert and Eunice Beals, Eagle Point; two brothers, Douglas Beals, Eagle Point, and Mark, Monroe, N.C.; a sister, Janice O'Donnell, Ashland; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements: Walton's Chapel of the Valley, Carson City, Nev.

Ulysses S. Atkinson

Ulysses Sylvester Atkinson, 84, of Tucson, formerly of Eagle Point, died April 4, 1999, in Tucson, Ariz.

Memorial contributions may be made to TMC Hospice, 5301 E. Grant Road, Tucson, AZ 85712.

He was born Aug. 26, 1914, in Udall, Kans.

On Aug. 16, 1932, in Bransom, Mo., he married Genevalin Biddle, who survives.

Mr. Atkinson joined the U.S. Army in 1943, and served in the Pacific Theater. At the time of his discharge in 1946, he was a technical sergeant.

Mr. Atkinson worked in construction in the San Francisco Bay area before forming his own grading and excavating business. In 1957, in Morgan Hill, Calif., he opened a gift shop. He returned to the Midwest from 1958 to 1960, and bought a dairy farm near Buffalo, Mo.

In 1960, he bought the Lake Creek General Store near Eagle Point, which he operated until 1967. He returned to California and operated a gold mining business in the Sierra Nevada Mountains for several years.

Following his retirement, Mr. Atkinson moved to Oregon and lived in Eagle Point from 1978 to 1990. In Eagle Point, he was active in the Rogue Eagle radio control flying club, and served as a fund-raiser for the Diabetes Association. He moved to Tucson in 1998.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Chloe Becca Flint; a sister, Ruth Morton, Arkansas City, Kans.; and three grandchildren.

Margaret Ann Thran

The graveside service for Margaret Ann Thran will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Eagle Point National Cemetery. George Hughes will officiate. The memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in New Life Christian Center, 1723 N.E. Vine, in Roseburg. Laurie Garner and George Hughes will officiate.

Mrs. Thran, 64, of Roseburg, formerly of Shady Cove, died Wednesday (April 7, 1999) in Portland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Umpqua Valley Christian School, 359 Roberts Creek Road, Roseburg, OR 97470.

She was born Margaret Walters on Aug. 19, 1934, in The Dalles. She attended grade school in Shady Cove and high school in Eagle Point, and graduated from Crater High School.

On July 30, 1960, in Grants Pass, she married Jon Thran, who survives. She moved to Roseburg in 1960.

Mrs. Thran was a hairdresser in Grants Pass and Roseburg. She also worked as a monitor at Umpqua Valley Christian School.

She enjoyed painting and making memory books, and was involved with Bible study at New Life Christian Center.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Joe Edna Thran, Tacoma, Wash.; a sister, Marie Ostmo, Eagle Point; and a brother, Dave Walters, Central Point.

Arrangements: Taylor Family Mortuary, Winston.

Jimmie M. White

The memorial service for Jimmie M. White will be at 2 p.m. April 24 at Christ Unity Church, 540 N. Holly St., Medford. The Rev. Beverly J. McPherron will officiate.

Mr. White, 66, died Thursday (April 6,1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Heart Center, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504, or Christ Unity Church, 504 N. Holly St., Medford, OR 97501.

As an amateur diver in 1968, Mr. White and a party of friends discovered a sunken oil tanker, SS Emido, off the Southern Oregon coast. The ship was torpedoed by Japanese forces in 1941.

Mr. White was born on May 31, 1932, in Miami, Texas, and grew up in Vista, Calif.

He received an honorable discharge as an airman basic from the U.S. Air Force on Jan. 25, 1955, and moved to the Rogue Valley later that year.

He was married and raised three daughters in Medford.

After a brief move to Seattle, Wash., on July 19, 1978, he married Else-Mari Sikkerbol, of Norway, who survives. The couple then moved to Medford.

Mr. White was the bar manager at the Medford Hotel for 18 years during the hotel's heyday. Later, he was involved in real estate investments.

He and his wife retired from the Royal Apartments, where they were property managers for 13 years.

In addition to diving, Mr. White was an adventurous glider and balloon flier. He panned for gold and enjoyed skiing in Norway.

He was an avid fisherman who, on his latest fishing trip with his son-in-law, caught a 24-pound yellow eye rock fish and a 35-pound salmon.

He was an active board member of Christ Unity Church and a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

He was an organ donor.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include: daughters Suzy Nickel, Toledo, Wash., Kathy Wilmarth, Port Orchard, Wash., and Jerrie Ann Gotz, Bothell, Wash.; a sister, Ruth Bloxton, Vista, Calif.; a brother, Lloyd White, Sutherlin; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and seven brothers.

Hazel R. Bosshard

The funeral for Hazel Rumburg Bosshard will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. The Rev. B.J. Holland, Ashland, will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Ashland.

Mrs. Bosshard, 89, of Ashland, died Friday (April 9,1999) at Ashland Community Hospital.

She was born Feb. 7, 1910, in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho.

She grew up in McCloud, Calif., and graduated from McCloud High School in 1928. She graduated from Chico State College in 1934.

On Feb. 21, 1936, in Carson City, Nev., she married Walt Bosshard, who died in 1978.

Mrs. Bosshard lived in Berkeley and McCloud, Calif., before moving to Ashland in 1944.

She was a teacher in Dorris, Calif., and at Medford Junior High School -- now McLoughlin Middle School. She retired in 1957.

She was a founder of the Ashland Community Hospital auxiliary and was a member of the Lady Elks and the Order of Eastern Star. She was an avid bowler.

Survivors include: a daughter, Beryl Suttle, Ashland; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister.

Friends may pay their respects from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home.

Beatrice T. Serikaku

The funeral for Beatrice Tsurue Serikaku will be at 4 p.m. today in Riverview Abbey Chapel in Portland.

Mrs. Serikaku, 66, of Beaverton, formerly of Medford, died March 31, 1999, in a Portland hospital.

She was born Beatrice Takao on Feb. 14, 1933, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was raised and educated in Honolulu.

In November 1954, in Honolulu, she married James Serikaku, who survives. They moved to Medford from Honolulu in 1986, and to Beaverton in 1997.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Warren, Honolulu; six daughters, Sharon Kokubun, San Mateo, Calif., Cheryl Sasaki and Jeanette Serikoku, both of Honolulu, Wanda Teraoka, Santa Clara, Calif., Aileen Takara, Tacoma, Wash., and Laura Bautista, Reno, Nev.; two brothers, Frank and Lawrence Takao, both of Honolulu; a sister, Ellen Hanaoka, Torrance, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren.

Arrangements: Riverview Abbey Funeral Home, Portland.
