Sharon Lee Marchant

The memorial service for Sharon Lee Marchant will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 865 N.W. Fifth St., Grants Pass.

Mrs. Marchant, 58, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (Feb. 21, 1999) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Preschool, 865 N.W. Fifth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526, or to The American Cancer Society-Oregon Division, P.O. Box 5625, Grants Pass, OR 97526.

She was born Sharon Lee Walsh on Feb. 9, 1941, in Alturas, Calif. She graduated from Medford High School in 1958.

On July 11, 1959, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Grants Pass, she married Charles A. Marchant Jr., who survives.

Mrs. Marchant was a teacher's aide at Abraham Lincoln Elementary, and taught kindergarten at Bethany Presbyterian Church for several years. She then taught at Tinkerbell Preschool for 13 years, and spent five years as a full-time Head Start teacher.

She was a charter board member at the Coalition for Kids and served on the board of directors for Stepping Stones Inc., District 7 budget committee, the Community Effort for Drug Free Youth and the Grants Pass High School Scholarship Foundation. She also served as president of all levels of the PTA, earning a lifetime membership.

Mrs. Marchant was active as an organist, Sunday school teacher, and board member at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She volunteered with the Josephine County Babe Ruth Auxiliary and the Pink Ladies, and served as a Boy Scout den mother and a Girl Scout troop leader.

She enjoyed reading, eclectic music, camping and strolls on the beach.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sons, Brent and Ryan, both of Grants Pass, and Phillip, Chino Hills, Calif.; a daughter, Alice Romick, Grants Pass; a brother, Kenneth McKim, Clarkston, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Alice Mae Burch

The graveside service for Alice Mae Burch will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford. Pastor Rick Burns of Medford will officiate.

Mrs. Burch, 81, of Sacramento, formerly of Medford, died Monday (Feb. 22, 1999) at Parkmont Convalescent in Fremont, Calif.

She was born Alice Mae Shirley on May 19, 1917, in Waterloo, Iowa.

On Dec. 22, 1941, in Reno, Nev., she married John P. Burch, who died in 1988.

Mrs. Burch was personnel manager for the F.W. Woolworth Co. for 10 years.

She was a member of the Arcade Baptist Church in Sacramento, Calif., and the First Baptist Church of Medford.

Survivors include two sons, John P. Jr., Houston, and Ralph W., Newark, Calif.; a sister, Lucille Greaves, Medford; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Maria `Jill' Howard

Maria Estelle "Jill" Howard, 94, of Medford, formerly of Brookings, died Monday (Feb. 22, 1999) at Rogue Valley Manor.

Memorial contributions may be made to Brookings Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 697, Brookings, OR 97415.

She was born Maria Estelle Layng on April 19, 1904, in Pittsburgh.

Mrs. Howard was a homemaker, and her many years of volunteer work included being chairman of the Grey Ladies at the U.S. Naval Academy Hospital in Annapolis, Md.

She was a member of the Brookings Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Ellen W. Howard, Brookings, and Louise Howard Dennett, Kittery, Maine; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 77 years, Frank Noble Howard.

Mrs. Evans, 71, of Ashland, died Tuesday (Feb. 23, 1999) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Jackson County Unit, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Patricia M. Johnson on May 15, 1927, in London. While living in England, she worked with Bloomsbury publisher Noel Carrington. She moved to the United States in 1950.

On March 15, 1950, in Minden, Nev., she married Arthur Evans, who survives. She moved to Southern Oregon in 1990.

Mrs. Evans began a career in art in the early 1960s in Santa Monica, Calif., painting in oils and acrylics. In recent years she focused on watercolors. She belonged to the Oregon Watercolor Society.

Mrs. Evans enjoyed reading and gardening, and traveled extensively during her husband's service in the Air Force, living in England, Germany and several states in America. She was active in the Audubon Society and the Sierra Club.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Stephanie Christelow, Pocatello, Idaho; and Roxanne Stout, Keno; a son, Gregory, San Diego; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Robert Delmar Pech

Robert Delmar Pech, 77, of Central Point, died Saturday (Feb. 20, 1999) at his home. Private interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

He was born Aug. 8, 1921, in Medford, a son of Henry G. and Louise (Dalke) Pech. He lived in the Rogue Valley all of his life.

On Aug. 30, 1948, in Reno, Nev., he married Henrietta "Billie" Kettler, who survives.

Mr. Pech was a rancher. He and his wife owned and operated the ranch where he was born.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a sister, Lorraine Harrison, Central Point.

Hugh George Calkins

Hugh George Calkins, 66, of Gold Hill, died Monday (Feb. 22, 1999) at his home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504, or to a favorite charity.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1933, in Wheeling, W.Va.

On April 4, 1958, in Albuquerque, N.M., he married Ellen J. Speer, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1980 from Winthrop, Wash.

Mr. Calkins was a teacher. He taught in New Mexico and on Guam.

He was a charter member of the Rogue Riviera 4 O'clock Club.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, A. Kay Beattie, Thornton, Colo.; Lori A. Ostrom, Monroe, Wash.; and Karen L. Calkins, Kenmore, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

`Bill' A. Hannaford Jr.

The memorial service for William A. "Bill" Hannaford Jr. will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, at Spring Lake in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Mr. Hannaford, 56, of Santa Rosa, formerly of Medford, died on Feb. 16, 1999, in Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital of cancer.

He was born on Feb. 4, 1943, in Medford, a son of William A. and Goldie B. Hannaford. He graduated from Medford High School in 1961, and attended San Francisco State College and Stanford University, where he studied music. He received a degree in psychology from the University of Oregon.

Mr. Hannaford was a music teacher and a musician. He performed with various jazz groups, and with the Southern Oregon Symphony.

He enjoyed writing jazz compositions, and was proficient on many instruments, including trombone, bass guitar and fiddle, and the antique helicon baritone horn. He also enjoyed tennis.

Survivors include his companion, Dianne Noonan, Santa Rosa, Calif.; his mother; three sons, Gabriel, Adamen, and Daniel, all of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a daughter, Hosanna Hannaford, Santa Rosa; a stepson, Emanuel Ash, Santa Rosa; a brother, Elmer Ray, Medford; and a sister, Myrna R. Sendelbach, Medford.

Arrangements: Neptune Society of Northern California, Santa Rosa, Calif.

Mary Ann Lehre

Mary Ann Lehre, 75, of White City, died Saturday (Feb. 13, 1999) at East Evans Creek Road in Sams Valley. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Mary Ann Austin on Sept. 18, 1923, in Potasky, Mich. She married Louis C. Lehre, who preceded her in death. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Benson, Ariz., in 1998.

Mrs. Lehre was a homemaker until her children were grown, after which she drove 18-wheel trucks. For the last five years, before retiring, she was a self-employed taxi driver.

She enjoyed reading, the outdoors, driving and hiking.

Survivors include a son, Ronald, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; five daughters, Patricia Lehre, Amarillo, Texas, Barbara Gilliland, Oakhurst, Calif., Kathleen Smith, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Nancy Price and Laura Mills, both of Fresno, Calif.; a brother, Henry Austin, Brutus, Mich.; a sister, Addie Kelly, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; 23 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; and a daughter, Linda Lehre.
