Joseph O. Francis Jr.

The graveside service for Joseph Oliver Francis Jr., will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Vancouver, Wash.

Mr. Francis, 89, of Vancouver, formerly of Medford, died Saturday (Jan. 9, 1999) in Vancouver.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born July 6, 1909, in Deadwood, Calif. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1929.

On Sept. 30, 1951, in Reno, Nev., he married Florence Seat Hammers, who died in 1997. He moved to Vancouver in 1982.

Mr. Francis was a truck driver for Hughes & Dodd, Bob Gilbert, Steve Wilson and McFarland. He also owned and operated The Cheerio and The Breakfast House restaurants in the Rogue Valley in the 1950s and 1960s.

He enjoyed camping and fishing.

Survivors include his daughter, Joyce Pedersen, Vancouver; a brother, Ernie, Myrtle Creek; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Snook, in 1997, a brother, Alfred, and two sisters, Mary Sportsman and Lucille McNeil.

Arrangements: Evergreen Memorial, Vancouver.

Mildred Esther Silva

The memorial service for Mildred Esther Silva will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Faith Bible Church, 2200 Roberts Road, Medford. Pastor William Kezer will officiate.

Mrs. Silva, 86, of White City, died Thursday (Jan. 7, 1999) at Three Fountains Nursing Center, Medford.

She was born Mildred E. Carter on Jan. 3, 1913, in Fairview, S.D. She moved to the Rogue Valley from South Dakota 61 years ago.

On May 19, 1947, in Grants Pass, she married Frank B. Silva, who survives.

Mrs. Silva was a homemaker.

She attended Reese Creek Christian Center in Eagle Point.

Mrs. Silva enjoyed crocheting, camping and ceramics.

Survivors, in addition to her huband, include a son, William Gilman, Eagle Point; a daughter, Susan Muir, White City; three stepchildren, Irene Kruggel, Medford, Barbara Christopherson, Sacramento, Calif., and Betty Prather, Seattle; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Avis Kezer and Florence Gross, and three sisters.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Dorothy Joan Vincent

The funeral for Dorothy Joan Vincent will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church in Central Point. Father Jim Clifford of Shepherd of the Valley will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Vincent, 82, of Central Point died Friday (Jan. 8, 1999) at her home.

She was born Dorothy Joan Rose on March 26, 1916, in Providence, R.I. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Puntagorda, Fla., in 1990.

On Sept. 11, 1937, in Providence, R.I., she married Adrian M. Vincent, who survives.

Mrs. Vincent was member of the Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church. From 1957 to 1979, she and her husband owned and operated a gas station and garage in Providence, R.I.

Mrs. Vincent enjoyed boating, dancing and playing cards.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Ron Vincent of Central Point; two sisters, Mildred Noon of Seekonk, Ma., and Lillian Lemlin of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 3-7:30 p.m. today at Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Melbourne V. Williams

The funeral for Melbourne Van Buskirk Williams will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the First Assembly of God Church, 1108 W. Main St., Medford. The Rev. Vernon "Cap" Marks will officiate. Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Missouri Flat Cemetery.

Mr. Williams, 85, of Gold Hill, died Thursday (Jan. 7, 1999) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Life Ministries Fund, 1108 W. Main St., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born March 17, 1913, in Dryden, in Josephine County, a son of William and Lida Mae Van Buskirk Williams.

Mr. Williams was a fourth-generation Josephine County resident. His ancestral family homesteaded in Williams in the late 1870s, then moved to Deer Creek Valley in the late 1880s where they lived on a 160-acre land grant.

Mr. Williams was valedictorian of the 1929 class of Kerby Union High High School.

On July 1, 1935, in Grants Pass, he married Dorothy Inman, who survives.

Mr. Williams served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1950.

In 1948, he was ordained by a Polynesian church in Hawaii. He served as pastor of the Sunny Valley Community Church in the early 1950s.

Mr. Williams was a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and later a custodian at Grants Pass High School.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Monty G., Grants Pass, Joel D., Gold Hill, and Martin E., Hermiston; a sister, Vivian Henderson, Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie Goetz and Lillian Rigby; and a brother, George.

Friends may pay their respects from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday in the Assembly of God Church, Medford.

James L. Duncan

James L. Duncan, 58, of Gold Hill, died Jan. 1, 1999, at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

He was born Jan. 4, 1940, in Phoenix, Ariz.

Mr. Duncan moved to the Rogue Valley in the late 1950s and graduated from Eagle Point High School.

He was a machine operator and mechanic before his retirement.

In his earlier years Mr. Duncan raced cars. He also enjoyed playing cribbage.

Survivors include a son, Joe Cavin Jr., Medford; two daughters, Amanda Duncan, Central Point, and Lori Relling, Medford; his parents, Jim and Christine Duncan, Medford; a sister, Lyn Lewis, Chandler, Ariz.; four brothers, Bill, Redmond, Robert and Kenneth, both Prineville, and Richard, Reno, Nev.; and four granddaughters.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Ione G. McConnell

Ione Genevieve McConnell, 74, of Gold Hill, died Friday (Jan. 8, 1999) at her home. A private service was held.

She was born Ione Gibler on May 8, 1924, in Des Plaines, Ill. On July 14, 1949, in Las Vegas, Nev., she married James O. McConnell, who died in 1965.

She came to the Rogue Valley 19 years ago from San Pedro, Calif. She worked in tenant relations for the city of Long Beach housing department. She retired in 1980.

Mrs. McConnell enjoyed sewing, gardening and was an advocate for animals.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeanne McConnell, Benecia, Calif.; two sisters, Jean Ghio, Pismo Beach, Calif., and Lois Navik, Avon Park, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James R. McConnell, in 1971.

Ethel M. Nagle

The funeral for Ethel Mary Nagle will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Central Point Stake Center. Bishop L. Ron Wells of the Gold Hill Ward will officiate.

Mrs. Nagle, 68, of Central Point, died Thursday (Jan. 7, 1999) at her home.

She was born Ethel Nelson on Feb. 28, 1930, in Westwood, Calif. On Aug. 6, 1949, in Klamath Falls, she married Robert H. Nagle, who survives.

They moved to the Rogue Valley from Klamath Falls in 1954.

Mrs. Nagle was an LPN at Rogue Valley Hospital for two years, then worked at Providence Medford Medical Center for 14 years. She then worked for Kimberly Home Health until her retirement in 1995.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gold Hill Ward.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sons, Bruce Alan, Medford, Ronald Dean, Seattle, Wash., and David Wayne, Denver, Colo.; two daughters, Kathryn Mary Vanmeter, Bakersfield, Calif., and Jennifer Amanda Ricks, West Jordan, Utah; three sisters, Evelyn Magallenes, Christina Smith and Norma Jeane Bennett, all in California; and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert, in 1974.

Friends may pay their respects from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at Memory Gardens Mortuary.

Hildegard"Heidi" Mason

Hildegard "Heidi" Schaumberg Mason, 71, of White City, died Wednesday (Jan. 6, 1999) at her home. No service is planned.

She was born Dec. 2, 1927, in Kassel, Germany. On Dec. 14, 1951, in Germany, she married Luther Lee Mason, who survives.

A homemaker, she traveled the world and the United States for 20 years with her husband before coming the Rogue Valley in 1972.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Gary Mason, Clairmont, Fla.; a sister, Brunhilda Williams, Appleton, Wis.; and one granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Roy Ellis Knapp

The memorial service for Roy Ellis Knapp will be at 3 p.m. today in the Idle Wheels Mobile Home Estates clubhouse, 2252 Table Rock Road, Medford.

Mr. Knapp, 93, of Medford, died Jan. 2, 1999, at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Feb. 7, 1905, in Redlands, Calif.

Mr. Knapp served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a bus driver for 18 years with Asbury Bus Lines in Los Angeles, then a machinist for the aircraft company Menasco Manufacturing Co., until retiring in 1969.

After moving to the Rogue Valley in 1971, he was a Pinkerton security guard for two years at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

On Sept. 28, 1973, in Las Vegas, Nev., he married Nocolene "Nickie" M. Cheney, who survives.

Mr. Knapp was a member of the International Association of Machinists, Service Employees Union and the American Legion Post 114. He enjoyed traveling and building and fixing things.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Roy A., Eagle Point, and Robert E., Huntington Beach, Calif.; three daughters, Shawn B. Graham, Medford, Karen K. Ludwig, Phoenix, Ariz., and Dorothy M. Zimmer, El Monte, Calif.; a stepson, Darrell Graham, Medford; a stepdaughter, Darlene Jobe, Mephis, Tenn.; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Lydia E. Knapp, in 1971; a son, Donald E., in 1998; and a stepson, Roland Graham, in 1971.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
