Ralph E. Black

Ralph E. Black, 85, of Central Point, died Monday (July 27, 1998) in Medford. A private service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Aug. 28, 1912, in Gazelle, Calif.

On April 24, 1933, in Yreka, Calif., he married Hazel Young, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1934.

Mr. Black was a log truck driver for Skeeters & Skeeters Logging.

He was a Christian, a member of the National Rifle Association, and enjoyed carpentry, bowling and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Kay Anderson, Central Point, and Wanda Decker, Applegate; two sisters, Wauneva Wakeman, White City, and Dorothy Davis, Phoenix; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Leonard; two sisters; three brothers; and a granddaughter.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Marvel Ruth Hefley

The memorial service for Marvel Ruth Hefley will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Eagle Point Community Bible Church, 27 S. Shasta Ave. Pastor Dick Bull will officiate. Interment will be in the Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Hefley, 70, of Eagle Point, died Monday (July 27, 1998) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eagle Point Community Bible Church, Library Fund, P.O. Box 192, Eagle Point, OR 97524.

She was born Marvel Christ on Nov. 21, 1927, in Olivia, Minn.

On Feb. 8, 1947, in Tustin, Calif., she married Bennie G. Hefley, who died in 1995. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1949 from Huntington Beach, Calif.

Mrs. Hefley was a member of Eagle Point Community Bible Church, Christian Women's Club, Bible Study Fellowship, Pear Blossom Doll Club and Antelope Creek Social Club.

Survivors include a son, Mark A., Eagle Point; a daughter, Martha J. Rummel, Trout Lake, Wash.; two sisters, Velva Christ, Malibu, Calif., and Lois Murray, Valinda, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.

Elgin V. Gattis

Elgin V. Gattis, 79, of Talent, died Sunday (July 26, 1998) at his home. Private interment will be in the Eagle Point National Cemetery.

He was born May 19, 1919, in Jacksonville, Texas.

On Nov. 14, 1945, in Gladewater, Texas, he married Mabel O. Allen, who survives.

Mr. Gattis was a bomber pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. While flying his 23rd mission, his plane was shot down over Germany. Mr. Gattis and his crew were captured and spent more than a year in a German prison camp.

Mr. Gattis moved to the Rogue Valley 38 years ago from Texas.

A carpenter, he worked for Medford Corp. for 20 years before retiring in 1980.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Doug, Medford; a brother, Charles, Fort Worth, Texas; and a sister, Murlene Swingler, Kilgore, Texas.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Herman Steeck

The memorial service for Herman Steeck will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford. The Rev. Marion Clarkson will officiate.

Mr. Steeck, 81, of Phoenix, died Friday (July 17, 1998) at his home.

He was born Jan. 24, 1917, in Florida.

Mr. Steeck was married to Margie Lane, who preceded him in death.

In 1968, in Reno, he married Dorothy Felt, who died in 1977.

Mr. Steeck moved to Medford in 1954 from Roseburg.

He owned and operated Steeck Electrical Co. in Medford and Roseburg before retiring in 1989.

He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Mr. Steeck was an avid gemologist and enjoyed photography.

Survivors include two stepsons, Brian Nelson, Central Point, and Craig Nelson, Salem; a stepdaughter, Martha Steeck, in Hawaii; a brother, Paul, Central Point; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Danny and John.

Harold Francis Elliott Jr.

Harold Francis Elliott Jr., 70, formerly of the Rogue Valley, died Friday (July 24, 1998) at Life Care Center in Coos Bay. A private service was held.

He was born April 14, 1928, in Staten Island, N.Y.

Mr. Elliott served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman apprentice from 1950 to 1954.

He moved to Southern Oregon in 1979, living in Grants Pass and Medford.

Mr. Elliott was a member of the Local 88 Tile Union in New York.

He enjoyed fishing and boating.

Survivors include a sister, Madeline Dean, Medford; and two nieces, Carolyn Sorahan, Los Gatos, Calif., and Karen Bandov, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.

Arrangements: Lundberg's L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Frederick Carl Straus

The memorial service for Frederick Carl Straus will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Medford Congregational United Church of Christ. A memorial service was held today in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Teton, Idaho.

Mr. Straus, 48, formerly of Central Point, died Saturday (July 25, 1998) of cancer in Teton, Idaho.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, head and neck cancer, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born July 14, 1950, in Central Point.

Mr. Straus attended Central Point schools and graduated from Oregon State University.

He served 2 years with the Peace Corps, teaching forestry practices in Costa Rica.

On July 30, 1988, in Baker City, he married Gretchen Martin, who survives.

During a career spanning 25 years with the U.S. Forest Service, he served posts in the Winema, Mount Hood and Wallowa-Whitman national forests. In Baker City, he was assistant rural county fire chief for 3 years.

Most recently he was a computer analyst in the supervisor's office at Targhee National Forest in Teton, where he also served on the planning and zoning committee.

Mr. Straus enjoyed restoring his historic home and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Kirsten Straus, Teton; his mother, Bertha Straus, Medford; a brother, David, Medford; and two sisters, Katherine Maloney, Portland, and Carol Lewis, Lake Oswego. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Straus.

Arrangements: Bidwell Funeral Home, St. Anthony, Idaho.

Mary Jane Dimick

Mary Jane Dimick, 98, of Central Point, died Saturday (July 25, 1998) at Hearthstone. A private service is planned.

She was born Aug. 9, 1899, in Rogue River, a daughter of John G. and Julia F. Lancaster White.

Mrs. Dimick was a lifelong resident of the Rogue Valley.

Survivors include two daughters, Maxine Ross, Central Point, and Florence Simmons, White City; a son, Donald B., Rogue River; a sister, Florence Bates, Walnut Creek, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; a son, Paul; three brothers; and four sisters.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

George James Boozer

The memorial service for George James Boozer will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Family Life Church, Ashland. The Rev. H. Bryant will officiate.

Mr. Boozer, 73, of Ashland, died Monday (July 27, 1998) at his home.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

Mary G. Blackwood

The memorial service for Mary Geneva Blackwood will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall, 3822 Crater Lake Ave., Medford.

Mrs. Blackwood, 86, of Medford, died Saturday (July 25, 1998) at Three Fountains Nursing Center.

She was born Mary Pettitt on Sept. 11, 1911, in Healdton, Okla. As a child she moved with her family to West Texas in a covered wagon.

In 1928, in Texas, she married Oscar Blackwood, who died in 1961. They moved to Central California, then to Medford in 1954.

Mrs. Blackwood was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses. She enjoyed writing poetry, singing and drawing.

Survivors include three sons, Doyle, Talent, Waymon, Aloha, and Dan, Brooklyn, N.Y.; three daughters, Wilta Vaughn and Bonnie Blackwood, both Bakersfield, Calif., and Lynn Mattheisen, Milwaukee, Wisc.; three sisters, Roxie Cook, Lubbock, Texas, and Ettie Herbert, Bakersfield; a brother, George Pettitt, Strathmore, Calif.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

A sister, Ava Brannum, Visalia, Calif., preceded her in death.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.
