Stuart O'Neil Austin

Stuart O'Neil Austin, 74, of Ashland, died Friday (April 3, 1998) in Medford. An Episcopal service will be held in the Austin family cemetery plot in Rochester, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ashland Public Library Building Fund, 410 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, OR 97520.

He was born June 28, 1923, in St. Regis Falls, N.Y. His ancestors came to America on the Mayflower.

He graduated from Johnstown, N.Y., High School. Mr. Austin graduated cum laude from Cornell University in 1947, receiving a bachelor of science degree in physics.

Mr. Austin joined General Electric's auditing staff, then later was a comptroller with Sperry Rand Corp. in New York and a comptroller and director of finance at ITT headquarters in New York City.

The family lived in Syracuse, N.Y.; Riverside and New Canaan, Conn.; Corona del Mar, Calif.; in Europe; and in Ashland, where he retired in 1987.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Austin enjoyed tennis, hiking and skiing.

Survivors include his wife, J. Ellen Gilson Austin, Ashland; four daughters, Rebecca O'Neil Austin Hounsell, Medford, Carolyn B. Austin, Riverside, Conn., Amy J. Heath Austin, Santa Cruz, Calif., and Laurie Ross Austin, Cortez, Colo.; a brother, Roger, Penfield, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral.

James Murray Bell

James Murray Bell, 88, of Medford, died Sunday (April 5, 1998) at his home. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 2, 1909, in Newton, Iowa.

Mr. Bell moved to the Rogue Valley in 1933 from Newton.

On Feb. 11, 1938, in Vancouver, Wash., he married Bertha Fallin, who died July 11, 1997.

Mr. Bell owned and operated Murray's Made-Rite Diner in Medford from 1940 to 1950. He ran Bell's Beverage Shop from 1950 to 1955, then was operations director for Tru-Mix until retiring in 1980.

He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 701, a life member of the Elks Lodge, and a Shriner.

Mr. Bell, an avid sports fan, also enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Billianne Thomas, Medford; a son, Richard Murray, Clackamas; three sisters, Grace Robison, Medford, and Lola Cowdery and Lois Gartland, both El Segundo, Calif.; a brother, Joe, Long Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Bert W. Winford

The memorial service for Bert W. Winford will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou Chapel, Medford. The Rev. John Braund of First Presbyterian Church of Phoenix will officiate.

Mr. Winford, 76, of Central Point, died Saturday (April 4, 1998) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Aug. 3, 1921, in Denison, Texas.

In 1946, in Yuma, Ariz., he married Mary Catherine Hawley, who survives.

During World War II, he was a machinist's mate first class in the U.S. Navy.

Beginning in 1949, Mr. Winford was a police officer for four years with the city of Oceanside, Calif., then a deputy marshal for four years.

With his wife, he owned and operated the Slim-ette Studio gym in Oceanside from 1955 to 1960.

Mr. Winford became a freelance photographer in 1963 with clients including the San Diego Union newspaper and KFMV-TV San Diego.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Linda Christine Savercool, Central Point; a son, Steven Michael, in California; two sisters, Lurlene Gandy, Hemet, Calif., and Mary Gwen, San Diego; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Evelyn Ruth Grimston

The memorial service for Evelyn Ruth Grimston will be at 10 a.m. Friday in First Presbyterian Church of Phoenix. The Rev. John Braund will officiate.

Mrs. Grimston, 88, of Phoenix, died Tuesday (April 7, 1998) at her home.

She was born Evelyn Miller on Nov. 20, 1909, in Lansing, Mich.

On Aug. 11, 1928, she married David Charles Ray, who died in 1954.

In 1955, in Saline, Mich., she married Walter Grimston, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Grimston moved to the Rogue Valley eight years ago from Prescott, Ariz.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Phoenix.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Smith, Ashland, and Barbara O'Dell, Michigan Center, Mich.; a brother, Albert Miller, Tryon, N.C.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and a grandson.

Lanore Elizabeth Clark

The graveside service for Lanore Elizabeth Clark will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Clark, 83, formerly of Medford and Ashland, died Tuesday (April 7, 1998) in Houston, Texas. Her home was in Houston.

She was born Lanore Groves on March 27, 1915, in Minneola, Kan.

On March 17, 1934, in Wichita, Kan., she married Harold Truman Clark, who died in 1989. They moved to Ashland from Corvallis in 1971.

Mrs. Clark was a member of the Church of Christ in Ashland and Medford.

Survivors include two sons, Truman Ross, Houston, and Wayne Royce, Malibu, Calif.; a daughter, Susan Beth Brown, Wharton, Texas; three brothers, Elbie L. Groves, Hanford, Calif., Carol R. Groves, Overland Park, Kan., and Donald M. Groves, in Hawaii; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Ruby Gertrude Lacy

The graveside service for Ruby Gertrude Lacy will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford. Bishop Claude Clason of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Ashland 2nd Ward will officiate.

Mrs. Lacy, 75, of Ashland, died Sunday (April 5, 1998) at Ashland Community Hospital.

She was born Ruby Gertrude Sullivan on Nov. 13, 1922, in Leslie, Ark.

On Feb. 25, 1946, in Reno, Nev., she married Virgil W. Lacy, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1946.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Ashland 2nd Ward, the Rogue Valley Genealogy Society, and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Her hobbies included needlepoint, candle making, and etching.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Alex, Medford; a brother, Cecil Sullivan, Oklahoma City, Okla.; two sisters, Dot Anderson, Tulsa, Okla., and Polly Mowdy, Oklahoma City; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Jean C. Archibald

Jean C. Archibald, 77, formerly of Medford, died Tuesday (March 31, 1998) in a Boise, Idaho, hospital. His home was in Boise.

A memorial service was held Saturday in St. Michael's Episcopal Cathedral, Boise.

He was born April 25, 1920, in Independence. The family moved to Roseburg where he grew up, then to Medford, where he graduated from Medford High School. In high school he was active in athletics.

Mr. Archibald graduated from Sacramento Junior College in California and attended Oregon State University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

On Feb. 28, 1943, in Medford, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Hardy, who survives.

During World War II, he was a radio operator in the U.S. Coast Guard.

After the war he returned to Medford where he worked for the California-Oregon Power Co.

In 1946, he began a career with United Airlines in Medford. In 1956 he was transferred to Boise as an assistant manager and retired a supervisor in 1980.

A sports enthusiast, for many years he coached Little League and men's fast pitch baseball, and was active in Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. Archibald was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Cathedral, the Retired United Airlines Employees Association, Oregon State Alumni Association, and a life member of the Elks Lodge.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Perry, Palo Alto, Calif.; a daughter, Paige Brown, Pocatello, Idaho; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements: Alden-Waggoner Chapel, Boise.

Dorothy Reed Mills

The graveside service for Dorothy Nesbeth Reed Mills will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Phoenix Cemetery.

Mrs. Mills, 84, of Ashland, died Sunday (April 5, 1998) at Ashland Community Hospital

Memorial contributions may be made to Ashland Community Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 98, Ashland, OR 97520 or to Ashland Fire Department, Rescue Unit, 455 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, OR 97520.

She was born Dorothy Reed on Dec. 2, 1913, in Lamoni, Iowa, a daughter of James and Sarah C. Reed. She moved with her mother and sister to the Rogue Valley in 1928, then to Ashland in 1934.

Mrs. Mills graduated from Ashland Senior High School and attended Southern Oregon Normal School for two years.

In 1937, she married John W. Mills. She was his partner in the plumbing business for more than 40 years. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Mills was a founding member of the Ashland Garden Club, a life member of Order of the Eastern Star and a charter member of Rogue Valley Miniature Club.

She also was an early volunteer for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and recently volunteered with the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation.

Survivors include two daughters, Patty Adams, Ashland, and Donna M. Lohman, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; two sons, Richard, Ashland, and John W., Hillsboro; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
