Mary Elizabeth Wright

Mary Elizabeth Wright, 93, of Ashland, died Sunday (Dec. 21, 1997), in Ashland. A private service was held Jan. 3 in Eugene.

She was born Mary Rose on Jan. 5, 1904, in Fort Worth, Texas, and grew up on a ranch outside of Harrisburg.

In 1928, she married Oscar Flaten in Grand Prairie, Alberta, where they ran a trading post. In 1938 they bought a sheep ranch outside Cottage Grove.

Mr. Flaten died in 1945.

In 1947, she married Clyde Wright, who died in 1970.

After living in Eugene for many years, she moved to Ashland in 1990.

Mrs. Wright was a direct descendant of Jacob Gillespie and Walker Young, early-day settlers of Eugene.

She had traveled overseas and enjoyed golfing, bowling, and Oregon history.

Survivors include four grandchildren, Marshall Kinkead and Mary Gardiner, both Ashland, Bradley Flaten, Dallas, Texas, and Howard Kinkead, Rock Springs, Wyo.; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Ashley Flaten and Bird Flaten; and a daughter, Robirda Kinkead.

Arrangements: Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Charles S. Rothwell

The graveside service for Charles Sheldon Rothwell will be at 2 p.m. today in the Scenic Hills Cemetery, Ashland. Bishop Claude Clason of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will officiate.

Charles, 17, of Ashland, died Wednesday (Jan. 7, 1998) at his home.

He was born April 9, 1980, in Ashland.

Charles was a student at Ashland High School.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2nd Ward in Ashland.

Survivors include his mother, Francee Rothwell, Ashland; his father, Sheldon M. Rothwell, Ashland; grandparents, Gloria Bounds, Ashland, Helene Rothwell, Talent, and Bud Rothwell, Salem; and great-grandmothers, Madeline Taylor, Talent, and Katie Chef, Seattle.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Albert L. Thomas

Albert L. Thomas, 91, formerly of Central Point, died Tuesday (Jan. 6, 1998) at his home in Springfield. A private interment will be in the Jacksonville Cemetery. Pastor Dave Humphreys will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rambling Rogues, Liz Drew, 333 Mountain View, No. 23, Talent, OR 97540.

He was born Aug. 31, 1906, in Infield, Ill., and grew up in Illinois and Missouri.

On Jan. 1, 1936, in Overland, Mo., he married H. Lavone Sprenger, who died Aug. 10, 1996. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1959.

Mr. Thomas worked in home building and general construction for many years.

He was a former member of the Medford Twirlers square dance group and an honorary member of the Rambling Rogues square dancers.

Survivors include three sons, Kent N., Central Point, Terry D., Springfield, and Albert L. Jr., Mission Hills, Calif.; a sister, Esther Harrison, Martinez, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services, Medford.

Douglass A. Lesser

The memorial service for Douglass A. Lesser will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the home of Lloyd and Ruth Thornton, 1922 Canyon Ave., Medford.

Mr. Lesser, 67, of Medford, died Tuesday (Jan. 6, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Jan. 4, 1931, in East Orange, N.J.

On March 6, 1973, in Hayward, Calif., he married Theresa Cihak, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1994 from Hayward.

Mr. Lesser retired as manager of Physics International.

A member of the Medford Baseball Boosters Club, he enjoyed the Southern Oregon Timberjacks. A stamp collector, he also was a member of the Friends and Friendship Club.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Doug, Half Moon Bay, Calif., and Keith, Bennington, Vt.; a daughter, Leila DeEugenio, Glassboro, N.J.; his mother, Beatrice Lesser, Medford; and eight grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services, Medford.

William Glen Stubbs

The service for William Glen Stubbs will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Chapel. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Stubbs, 82, of Central Point, died Sunday (Jan. 4, 1998) at his home.

He was born March 20, 1915, in Harrison, Ark.

During World War II, Mr. Stubbs served in the U.S. Army in the European-African Middle Eastern Theater, participating in two campaigns. He was a M-1 rifle sharpshooter.

On Nov. 24, 1948, in Helena, Mont., he married Eleanor Ellen Arnold, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1955 from Kalispell, Mont.

Mr. Stubbs, a front end loader operator, worked for Timber Products for 22 years, retiring in 1977.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Montana, and was a member of the International Woodworkers Of America.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, William L., Denver, Colo., and Calvin, Libby, Mont.; a daughter, Ginnie Gregory, Seattle; three brothers, Donald J., Medford, Henry Lee, Creswell, and Paul J., Econdido, Calif.; three sisters, Naomi James, Post Falls, Idaho, Elverna McDonnell, Portland, and Dorothy Taylor, Lakewood, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at Hillcrest Chapel.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Doris Jeannette Queen

The memorial service for Doris Jeannette Queen will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Pythian Hall, 2301 Upper River Road loop, Grants Pass. Pastor Steve Shaw will officiate.

Mrs. Queen, 77, formerly of Medford, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 1998) at Three Rivers Community Hospital, Washington Campus, in Grants Pass. Her home was in Merlin.

She was born Doris Jeannette Rose on Feb. 4, 1920, in Rushville, Neb., and grew up in the Merlin and Medford areas.

On Aug. 18, 1943, in Medford, she married Cyrus Queen, who died in 1972. She lived in Bakersfield, Calif., for many years.

Mrs. Queen was a dental nurse.

She was a member of the Vineyard Christian Fellowship and the Pythian Sisters in Grants Pass.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Ryan, Merlin; three brothers, Jim Rose, Medford, Ray Rose, Grants Pass, and Lyle Rose, Tigard; two sisters, Temple Gibson, Medford, and Dora Tatham, Fresno, Calif.; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Lundberg's L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Frances Eva Tonn

The memorial service for Frances Eva Tonn will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Central Point. Pastor Dwayne Brown will officiate. Private inurnment will be in Phoenix Cemetery.

Mrs. Tonn, 88, of Central Point, died Friday (Jan. 2, 1998) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Crater Foundation, Frances Tonn Scholarship Fund, 451 N. Second St., Central Point, OR 97502.

She was born Dec. 27, 1909, in Sams Valley, a daughter of Owen T. and Margaret A. Wilson.

On May 28, 1934, in Medford, she married Harry Tonn, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Tonn began teaching for the Central Point School District in 1929. She taught at Sams Valley Elementary School for many years, retiring in 1962.

She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Central Point Grange, and First Presbyterian Church in Central Point.

Mrs. Tonn enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a son, Harvey L., Central Point; a brother, Dean Wilson, Haines, Alaska; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Dunn; three brothers, Steve, John and Russell Wilson; and a sister, Betty Dusenberry.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Ada Gertrude Jones

Ada Gertrude Jones, 90, formerly of Ashland, died Monday (Jan. 5, 1998) in Vale. A family service will be held later.

She was born Ada Gertrude Dunn on Sept. 29, 1907, in Burns.

On Oct. 22, 1925, in Baker City, she married Theodore Jones, who died in 1972. They moved to Ashland in 1934 from Burns. Mrs. Jones moved to Vale 10 years ago.

Mrs. Jones sold women's apparel door-to-door for several years. Later, she managed apartment buildings that she owned.

She was a member of the Neighbors of Woodcraft Lodge in Ashland, where she was president four times.

Survivors include a son, Michel Edward Jones O'Hara, Central Point; a brother, Arther James Dunn, Paisley; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Christine and Mary Moore; and three brothers, William, Sam and Ralph Dunn.

Arrangements: Lienkaemper Funeral Chapel, Vale.
