Martha Westbrook
August 21,1905 - December 19, 2006

Martha Westbrook, 101, of Sweet Home died Tuesday in her home.

Martha Matilda (Archerd) Westbrook was born August 21, 1905 in Kimball, South Dakota to Robert Wayne and Flora Etta (Hovey) Archerd. She was the third child of nine.

She moved to Alsea, Oregon at the age of eleven, Falls City in 1945, and to Sweet Home in 1970. She also lived in several other small towns. Martha met Walter Westbrook at a dance, and they married April 5, 1925 in Falls City. They had eleven children, of which three died at birth. Martha also had three step children.

Martha was a member of Hwy. 20 Church of Christ in Sweet Home and was always there unless she was out of town or too ill to attend. She attended her last service there on Dec. 17, 2006.

She is survived by brother, Wayne Archerd of North Bend; daughters, Ina Dunaway of Sweet Home, Wilma Denue and husband, Junior, of Blodgett, Marie Lamb of Fairbanks, Alaska; sons, Harold Westbrook of Sweet Home, and Floyd and Wayne Westbrook of Blodgett; 52 grandchildren; 131 great grandchildren, 122 great great grandchildren and 3 great great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband, Walter; daughters, Verla Johnson, Annetta Burser, Virginia Montegomery-Cooper; sons, Robert and baby boy Westbrook; and step sons, Walter and Aazel Cate.

Viewing will be Tuesday, December 26, from 4:00-7:00 pm at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel. Services will be held 1:00 pm Wednesday December 27, at Hwy. 20 Church of Christ, 3025 Hwy. 20. Burial will follow at Gilliland Cemetery. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

Dennis Henthorne
January 25, 1954 - December 20, 2006

Dennis Henthorne, 52, of Albany died Wednesday. He was born to Samuel and Birtha (Peadon) Henthorne in Lebanon.

Dennis grew up in Sweet Home and graduated from Sweet Home High School. Dennis was a realtor for a while, but mostly worked in plywood mills until back problems forced him to quit. Dennis loved to fish and hunt.

He is survived by sisters, Leola Weld of Albany, Shirley Steenhout of Oklahoma, and Drew Baldwin of Portland; brother, Sam Henthorne of Sweet Home; daughter, Angela Wade of Clinton, UT; and significant other, Vivian “Jean” Lantis of Albany.

Memorial Service will be at 2:00 pm December 30 at Heatherdale Trailor Village in the Rec Room, 950 SE Airport Road, Albany. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

Kenneth Carl Elavsky
July 9, 1924 - December 82, 2006

Kenneth Carl Elavsky, 82, died Sunday, December 24, 2006. He was born July 9, 1924 in Minnesota, the son of Mike and Mary (Profant) Elavsky.

He entered the U.S. Navy as a young man during WWII and served in the South Pacific aboard the U.S. Smalley. He came west after the war, married, and had a family. Kenneth worked on railcars in Portland, Oregon. He eventually became an independent scrap metal worker. Kenneth came to Sweet Home about two years ago to be closer to family.

Kenneth enjoyed Portland Wrestling, nature, and the outdoors.

He is survived by his children, Linda Mulvanny of Sweet Home and Karen Grosnicoles of Gresham, Oregon; two brothers, Mike Elavsky and Ray Elavsky; sister, Mary Oloson; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one soon to be great, great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Elavsky; one sister; and one brother.

A memorial gathering will take place at 1:00 pm Saturday, January 27, 2007 at the Skyline Inn in Sweet Home. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Hazel I. Sutter
January 14, 1914 to September 1, 2006

Hazel I. Sutter, 92, of Sweet Home, Oregon passed away on Friday at the Twin Oaks Care Center in Lebanon, Oregon.

She was born in West Port to Charles and Lena (Lydvikson) Heim. She married Jake Sutter in West Port. Jake worked in the mill there until it closed. He later found work in Lebanon, and then in Sweet Home. Hazel always found work in whatever town Jake's job took them. While in Lebanon and Sweet Home, Hazel worked at Gilbert's and Grove's, and later at White's Electronics, retiring in her 70's. Jake passed away in 1961. Hazel had been a member of the Sweet Home United Methodist Church since 1947. She was very active and close with her church family.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Alice Young, and brother, Charles A. "Sunny" Heim.

Her service will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 8, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Sweet Home, Oregon.

Steven Frentress
August 27, 1960 - August 31, 2006

Steven Frentress, 46, of Sweet Home died Thursday. He was born to Thomas and Cosette (Wyneger) Frentress in Roseburg.

He lived in Myrtle Creek, Oregon for four years, passing through Reedsport and starting school in Eugene. He later moved to Sweet Home and graduated from Sweet Home High School. After graduation, Steven entered the US Navy and traveled the world as West Admiral Chef for eight years. When he left the Navy, he moved to California and worked with Home Depot for eleven years. While in California, Steven met Shelley Johnson. Together, they moved to Sweet Home to be closer to his parents.

Steven is survived by life partner, Shelley Johnson; parents, Thomas and Cosette Frentress; brother, Jay Frentress of Eugene; sisters, Jan Banks of Newton, Kansas and Cindy Person of Lebanon, Oregon; nephews, Jessy Person, Chris and Jeff Banks; and niece, Erica Banks.

Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

Gladys Pearl Roberts
August 29, 1919 to September 11, 2006

Gladys Pearl Roberts, 87, formerly of Sweet Home, passed away Monday at the Mennonite Home in Albany, Oregon. She was born in Perry, Oklahoma to Frank and Alberta (Masters) Smelser.

As a young child, her family moved to the town of Willamina in the Grand Ronde area of Oregon. She graduated from high school in Willamina, and then continued to beauty school in Salem. Upon graduation, she opened a beauty shop in Willamina. She later met and married Jack Roberts.

The couple moved to Sweet Home, and together with Jack’s brother, Wayne, they opened Robert’s Bro’s Grocery. Two years later, Gladys and Jack opened Robert’s Men’s Clothes in Sweet Home, which they operated for nearly 30 years.

Gladys had many talents and left behind many dear and close friends. She was active in the Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls, the Sweet Home Evangelical Church, and was also a 4-H leader. She enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends, and painting.

She is survived by sons, Richard of Philadelphia and Donald (and Andrea) of Seattle, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Roberts, in 1979 and brothers, Richard and Russell Smelser.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Willamette Manor in Lebanon, the Mennonite Village in Albany, and to the many friends who contributed to her loving care.

The funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday at the Sweet Home Evangelical Church. A reception will follow the service in the church hall. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Kaye Dietz
March 25, 1958 to September 17, 2006

Kaye Phyllis Dietz, 48 of Foster died Sunday, September 17. She was born to Roy and Phyllis (O’Rilley) Pruitt in Paradise, CA.

Kaye worked in Senior Services for 12 years. She was a very giving woman with her door open to anyone. She and her husband raised their five children together in a home that strongly believed in the principles of their faith. Kaye worked and worshipped at the Resurrection Church in Foster.

She is survived by husband, Wayne Dietz of Foster; sons, Alonzo Martinez of CA, Theodore Dietz of Ontario, Bruce Dietz of Idaho, Jonathan Pruitt of Foster; daughters, Caroline Dietz of Sweet Home, Jenifer Dietz of Foster and 12 grandchildren.

Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Wendell Eads
March 28, 1930 to September 30, 2006

Wendell Eads, 76, of Sweet Home died Sunday, September 30. He was born to Harry and Gladys (Chewning) Eads in Baker, Oregon.

In 1967 Wendell married Miriam Zoffel, and they had a son. Through the years he travelled all over Europe.

He is survived by his wife, Miriam Eads of Sweet Home; son, David Hutton of Churchville, Maryland; sisters, Billie Denver of Lebanon, Karan Wright of Lebanon, Robbin Strubber of Portland, LaNae Conley of Scappoose; and brother, Harry and his wife Evelyn Eads of Mexico.

Wendell was preceded in death by his sisters, Katheryn Buxton and Marion Anderson.

A burial and service will be conducted at Arlington Cemetery. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
