SWEET HOME - Clayton R. Baldinger, 82, of Sweet Home, died Sunday at Lebanon Community Hospital.

Glen Alford Long
Jan. 23, 1923 - July 17, 2000

Glen Alford Long, 77, of Dallas died July 17. He owned an interior design business in Albany for 30 years.

Rolla A. Blackford

Nov. 29, 1909 - April 22, 2001

Rolla A. "Slim" Blackford, 91, of Albany died Sunday.

Mr. Blackford was born in Dogwood, Mo., to Joseph and Belva (Walker) Blackford. He grew up and was educated in Springfield, Mo. He began work as a painter at age 16, and was a painter until his 1971 retirement.

He married Erma D. Bookout on July 13, 1937, in Springfield, Mo. They lived in Springfield and in Las Vegas and Salem. They moved to the Albany area in 1943, living in Adair housing while he worked for the Camp Adair engineers. In 1944 the Blackfords moved to Albany.

Mr. Blackford belonged to the Painters Union Local No. 724. He enjoyed being a husband, father and grandfather and liked horses and gardening.

Surviving are wife Erma; sons Linnie Townlin and John Blackford, both of Albany; sister Lucy "Janette" Webb of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandsons.

Brothers Charles and Joseph and sister Anna Williams died before he did.

Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at AAsum Funeral home. Mr. Blackford's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Pastor Thorten Gapen officiating. Burial will follow at Twin Oaks Memorial Garden.

Earl Edward Saari

Oct. 16, 1924 - Feb. 9, 2001

CORVALLIS - Earl Edward Saari, 76, of Corvallis died Friday at Heart of the Valley Care Center.

He was born in Minneapolis, the son of Toby and Alice (Barke) Saari. He spent his childhood in Minot, N.D., where much of his time was spent with his grandmother, Emma Barke. Later years were spent in Flint, Mich., with Alice and Grand Clark.

He served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific, including Guam and Iwo Jima. He was injured and returned to Minot, where he married Gwen Land Grotte Dec. 9, 1945.

Mr. Saari graduated from Minot State College and taught at Adrian High School in Adrian. He also taught at Bandon High School and Corvallis High School, teaching business and wood shop and serving as athletic director.

Fishing, ocean boating, woodworking, traveling and the joy of humor were among his hobbies.

Surviving are his wife, Gwen of Corvallis; daughters Cathy House of Boardman and Cindy Wilken of Keizer; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, in the Calvin Presbyterian Church in Corvallis. Burial with military honors by Corvallis American Legion Post 11 Honor Guard will precede the service, which begins at 1 p.m. in Oak Lawn Memorial Park cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Benton Hospice Service Inc. or to Corvallis High School Athletic Dept. in care of McHenry Funeral Home, 206 N.W. Fifth St., Corvallis, Ore., 97330.

Carl E. `Gene' Alwert
Dec. 11, 1933 - Oct. 6, 1999

SWEET HOME - Former Sweet Home resident Carl E. "Gene" Alwert, 65, of Portland died Wednesday.

He was born in Farina, Ill., to Carl Sr. and Catherine Alwert. The family moved to Coquille in 1937 and to Sweet Home in 1943. He graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1952.

He married Shirley Putnam July 18, 1953, in Sweet Home.

Mr. Alwert worked for the Oregon plywood mills and was a machinist for Cascade Corp. from 1955 until 1978, when he went to work for Nabisco. He retired as a Nabisco maintenance and repair supervisor in 1996.

Mr. Alwert enjoyed golfing, trout fishing, woodworking and all types of hunting.

Surviving are wife Shirley; sons Michael of Camas and Gary and James, both of Portland; daughter Teresa Hamberger of Camp Sherman; mother Catherine Bush of Sweet Home; brother William of Kodiak, Alaska; and eight grandchildren.

His father died earlier.

A celebration of Mr. Alwert's life will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel in Gresham.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Helen's Catholic Church in Sweet Home. Burial will follow at Sweet Home's Gilliland cemetery.

Contributions in Mr. Alwert's name may be made to the Portland Adventist Hospice or Home Health Program.

Warner McCollister
Feb. 7, 1922 - Oct. 4, 1999

SUBLIMITY - Warner C. McCollister, 77, of Sublimity died Monday of complications from leukemia.

Mr. McCollister was born in Canton, Mo., and served in the Navy during World War II.

He married Nellie Hartwig May 31, 1948, and they came to Oregon on their honeymoon. They settled in Sublimity on a 33 acre farm.

Mr. McCollister had worked for the Kintz and Hassler sawmill in Lyons and was a truck driver for Wilco Farmers of Stayton for 34 years.

He belonged to Cascade Foothills Square Dance Club of Stayton. In retirement he enjoyed farming, haying, truck driving and inventing gadgets for use on the farm.

Surviving are wife Nellie; daughters Kathy Scheibe of St. Paul and Carol Binkley of Salem and Jill Ziebert of Scio; son Tim McCollister of Lyons; brother Fredrick of Canton, Mo.; and sister Doris Brennan of Williamstown, Mo. There are eight grandchildren.

Private, family services are planned. Contributions in Mr. McCollister's memory may be made to the American Red Cross or the American Cancer Society.

David A. Mendenhall
Oct. 6, 1958 - Oct. 3, 1999

David A. Mendenhall, 40, of Albany died Sunday.

Born in Roseburg, he grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. Mr. Mendenhall married Debbie King Oct. 20, 1984, in McMinnville.

He was a log truck driver for more than 16 years and had worked for more than six years as a fuel truck driver for Younger Oil of Albany.

Surviving are wife Debbie; sons Randy, Zach, Joe and Fred, all of Albany; stepsons Nic DeHart of Albany and Jeff DeHart of Corvallis; brothers Richard of Florida and John of Ohio; parents Richard "Dick" and Mary (Gumpinger) Mendenhall of Independence; sister Teresa Harper of Sheridan; and grandson Bradly DeHart.

A private, family gathering was held.

Eugene L. Mitscher
Former Willamette Valley resident Eugene L. Mitscher, 71, died of cancer Sept. 17, 1999 in St. George, Utah. He had lived in Waldport before moving to Utah.

Mr. Mitscher served in the Army Air Corps and the Marine Corps 1st Infantry Division. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

He was known for his friendship and for living life fully.

Survivors include his wife Cordelia, their children and grandchildren.

William Leonard McCaw

William Leonard McCaw, 90, died Feb. 1 in Keizer. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jefferson Christian Church. Contributions in his name may be made to the church, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.

Annie Yoder
Oct. 5, 1916 - April 20, 2001

Annie Yoder, 84, of Albany, died Friday at home.

Mrs. Yoder was born and grew up in the rural area east of Albany. She was the daughter of Simon and Mary (Erb) Gerig. She attended Price and Grand Prairie grade schools and attended Heston College in 1939.

She married Glenn Yoder on March 31, 1940, in Albany, and they lived in Joetown, Iowa, returning to Albany in 1946.

Mrs. Yoder was a member of Albany Mennonite Church. A homemaker, she worked as a nurse's aide at Sunset Manor (now Albany Care Center) and at Albany General Hospital. She liked doing needlework and braiding rugs, and she received many awards at state fairs for her handiwork. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Surviving are husband Glenn; sons Richard of Estacada, Douglas of Albany and Donovan of Canby; daughter Deanne Gingerich of Salem; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Her sisters, Martha Eicher, Mary Nafziger and Agnes Boshart, preceded her in death.

A memorial service for Mrs. Yoder will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Albany Mennonite Church, with Pastors Dan Rehwalt and Lynn Miller officiating. A private graveside service was at Knox Butte cemetery.

Contributions in her name may be made to the Evergreen Hospice or the Albany Mennonite Church. They may be sent in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.

Margaret B. Stewart

Margaret B. Stewart, 84, of Corvallis died Tuesday. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 16 at DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Benton Hospice Service Inc. at P.O. Box 100, Corvallis, Ore. 97339.

Rose E. Savolt

March 18, 1912 - April 26, 2001

Rose E. Savolt, 89, of Sweet Home died Thursday at Twin Oaks Care Center.

She was born in Argentina to Russian emigrant parents Gotleib and Elizabeth Stieb. The family moved to Colorado during her first year, and she grew up on a farm there.

She married John Savolt on Dec. 31, 1945, in Iliff, Colo. They lived in Los Angeles until 1981, when they moved to Sweet Home. Mr. Savolt died in September of 1993.

Mrs. Savolt moved to the Wiley Creek Community and served on the activity and sunshine committees. She enjoyed participating in special events and outings and took part in the Alzheimer's Association walk in 1999.

Mrs. Savolt enjoyed being a homemaker and mother. She liked crocheting and other crafts and was fond of flowers. She belonged to St. Helen's Catholic Church in Sweet Home.

Surviving are daughters Lorraine McKenney of Midway City, Calif., and Alberta Sheroski of Hilton Head, S.C.; son Patrick of Sweet Home; sister Anna Lambreck of Sterling, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Son Alphonsus Joseph Savolt died in 1979.

Viewing will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. at St. Helen's Catholic Church, with Father Andrew Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Gilliland cemetery.
