Peggy Broyles
Madras resident Peggy June Broyles died March 22, 2003, at the age of 63.
Mrs. Broyles was born Nov. 10, 1939, in Twinbridges, Mont., to parents Edward and Carrie (Tayer) Smith. She moved to Oregon as a small child, and grew up in The Dalles. On May 30, 1979, she married James Broyles.
She had recently relocated to Madras from Pensacola, Fla. She was a homemaker most of her life, and did work as a secretary for the Baptist Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, James Broyles; one brother; one sister; five sons; three daughters; 16 grandchildren; and one-great-grandchild.
At her request, no formal services were held. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras

Rosalie Jean Kinonen
Madras resident Rosalie Jean Kinonen died March 25, 2003, at the age of 73.
Mrs. Kinonen was born April 4, 1929, in Portland to parents Allen and Leona (Merle) White. She was raised in Portland and graduated from Girls Polytechnic High School there.
She married Ebner E. Kinonen on Jan. 21, 1967, in Portland. The moved to the Seattle area, then to Huntsville, Ala., Redmond, Wash., and then to Madras 12 years ago.
She worked in food service, was a great baker and gardener, and an expert seamstress. She made and sold shirts and polar fleece jackets.
Survivors include her husband, Ebner Kinonen of Madras; son. Gerald Hanley of Fall City, Wash; daughters, Julie Hession of Tigard, Debra Tolva of Seaview, Wash., and Kathleen Taylor of Portland; brothers, Robert White of Palm Desert, Calif., and Vernon White of Portland; and sister, Dorothy Paris of Lake Oswego; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lindy Jean Kinonen.
No funeral services were held.. Arrangements were under the direction of Autumn Funerals of Redmond.

Glenn Cochran
Culver resident Glenn LeRoy Cochran died Dec. 11, 2002, at the age of 89.
Mr. Cochran was born March 20, 1913, in Bridgeport, Neb., to parents William and Amanda Cochran. On May 13, 1936 he married Letha Robinson in Ellensburg, Wash. He served in the U.S. Navy and following his service worked as a mechanic for Auto Car Corp.
Survivors include his son, Mike Cochran of Culver. He was preceded in death by his wife, Letha, two brothers and one sister.
A graveside service was held Dec. 16, at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Leah Dylen
Terrebonne resident Leah May Dylen died Nov. 12, 2002, at the age of 87.
Mrs. Dylen was born May 16, 1915, in Kootenai, Idaho, to parents Don and Amy Bell (Verback) Miller. On May 18, 1934, she and Mel Moe were married in Newport, Wash. She worked as a waitress at The Stag Restaurant in Madras for 25 years, retiring in 1975. On March 31, 1991, she married Axel Dylen in Yuma, Ariz. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.
Survivors include sons, Don and Marge Moe and Wayne and Kathy Moe, all of Madras, Gene and Betty Moe of Crooked River Ranch, and Gary Moe of Culver; brothers, David Miller of Kootenai, Idaho, Lyle and Ann Miller of Chicago, Ill., Jerry and Shirley Miller of Thompson Falls, Mont.; sisters, Ina and Jackson of Kootenai, Idaho, Ila and Veron Liles of Coquille, Leigh and Pat Shadel of Hayden Lake, Idaho; sister-in-law, Wilma Miller of Kamiah, Idaho; special friends, Niki and Larry Alderman of Madras, and Dr. John and Jill Pavlicek of Bend, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both her husbands.
The memorial service was delayed until this month and will be held at 11 a.m., Dec. 21, at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel in Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, or Meadow Wood Speech Camp in care of the Madras Elks Lodge.

Dwight O. Macy
Longtime Culver resident Dwight O. Macy died Dec. 10, 2002, at the age of 85.
Mr. Macy was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Fairfield, Iowa, to parents Harlan and Clara (Roberts) Macy. He attended elementary and high school at Green Leaf Academy, in Greenleaf, Idaho, where he met his future wife, Marie Rhoads, when he was in the eighth grade. He later attended the University of Idaho, where he lettered in wrestling for three years, and graduated in 1940.
On Aug. 19, 1940, he and Marie were married in Greenleaf, Idaho. He taught agriculture classes 2 1/2 years, then began farming in Homedale, Idaho. In 1947, the Macys moved to a farm in Culver, which developed into Macy Ranches. He and other farming partners formed Round Butte Seed and Round Butte Potato Growers and Shippers. Mr. Macy served in the Oregon Potato Commission for 17 years, National Potato Council, and was International Market Chairman of the Potato Board, the Jefferson County Co-op Board, was a member of the Cattleman's Association, and was on the Deschutes Valley Water Board for 49 years.
Besides farming, the Macys were active in the school and community. They were charter members and held initial church meetings in their home while the Metolius Friends Church was being formed, Mr. Macy served many years on the Culver School Board, was a 4-H leader for 32 years, was a member of the Grand Greenleaf Friends Academy No. 1540, and served as an honorary member for the George Fox University Board of Directors (trustees) until age 75.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marie Macy of Culver; sons, Ed and Richard Macy, both of Culver, and John Macy of Redmond; daughters, Reata Young of Redmond, and Renae Charlton of Salem; brother, Mahlon Macy of Newberg; 15 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and four sisters.
A memorial service was held Dec. 14, at the Metolius Friends Church, and burial was at Grey Butte cemetery. Memorial contributions have been suggested to George Fox Evangelical Seminary Macy Scholarship, in care of George Fox University, P.O. Box 6189, Newberg, OR 97132; or to Greenleaf Friends Academy, P.O. Box 368, Greenleaf, Idaho, 83626. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

James McCullough
Madras resident James McCullough died Dec. 13, 2002, at the age of 76.
Mr. McCullough was born April 18, 1926, in Canton, Okla., to parents Archie and Ruby (Linnville) McCullough. He was a World War II veteran and served with the Navy in the Pacific. On Feb. 16, 1945, he married his wife Violet in Ellensburg, Wash. He was employed with United Grocers in Portland for over 20 years, retiring and moving to Madras in 1987.
He was a member of the Madras Elks Lodge, Madras IOOF Lodge, and enjoyed camping, fishing and his yard.
Survivors include his wife, Violet McCullough of Madras; daughter, Joy Wilson of Ellensburg, Wash.; brother, Jake McCullough of Springfield; sister, Josie Gilkey of Centralia, Wash., and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son and one brother.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Madras Elks Lodge. Inurnment will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home.

Robert Williams
Warm Springs resident Robert Wayne "Wyno" Williams died Dec. 13, 2002, at a Redmond care center at age 44, due to a brain tumor.
Mr. Williams was born Jan. 13, 1958, in Madras to parents J. Silas and Lenora (Wilkinson) Williams. He was raised and lived in Warm Springs.
Survivors include his father, J. Silas Williams; sisters, Peggy Williams, Louise Katchia, Cassie Katchia, Regina LeClaire, Denise LeClaire, Lorna LeClaire, Martha Heath, Roberta Heath; brothers, Richard Wolfe, John Katchia, Lyle Katchia, William Katchia, Marlon LeClaire, Wallace Le Claire, Johnson Heath; uncles, Douglas, George and Jack; and numerous other uncles, aunts, grandmothers, nieces and nephews.
A dressing ceremony was held at the Agency Longhouse Dec. 16, with Shaker service and Washut and prayer service that evening. Burial was at the Agency cemetery in Warm Springs on Dec. 17. Arrangements were under the direction of Autumn Funerals of Redmond.

Hazel Ames
Madras resident Hazel Louise Ames died June 20, 2004, at the age of 87.
Mrs. Ames was born May 13, 1917, in Iuka, Kan., to parents Wesley and Loah (Caulk) Parker. She married Marvin Ames on Dec. 23, 1934 in Colorado. They moved to Madras to farm when the irrigation water arrived.
She worked as a cook for the Jefferson County School District 509-J, and she was a member of the First Christian Church, Rebekah Lodge, and Mountain View Hospital Auxiliary.
Her special interests included quilting, crafts, fishing, traveling, camping, and dancing. She lived part-time in Bend.
Survivors include her son, Raymond Ames of Madras; daughter, Lanora Courtain of Madras; brothers, Earl Parker of Mission, Texas, and Dave Parker of Trail, Ore.; sister, Mary Helen Wagner of Waynesville, Mo.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one child, two brothers and four sisters.
A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., June 24, at Bel-Air Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., June 25, at the First Christian Church in Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mountain View Hospital Auxiliary.

Erwin Brown
Metolius resident Erwin Dwayne "Bud" Brown died June 16, 2004, at Mountain View Hospital. He was 66.
Mr. Brown was born May 18, 1938, in Yakima, Wash., to parents Clausie and Dorothy (Hullinger) Brown. He served in the U.S. Air Force. On June 16, 1962, he married Janice Jedlicka in Omaha, Neb.
He was employed as a system analyst for Johnson Control Company.He was very involved in Little League Baseball, and served as a past president of North Kitsap Babe Ruth League, as well as serving as a baseball coach for 20 years. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Brown of Metolius; children, Paul Brown of Madras and Melody Harned of Forest Grove; grandchildren, Hayley Harned and Megan and Justin Brown; brothers, Reuben and Russell Brown of Yakima, Wash., and Dwayne Brown of Seattle, Wash.
A private family service will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Pfc. Thomas Tucker
Private first class Thomas Lowell Tucker died June 16, 2006, while on duty in Iraq. He was 25.
Thomas was born May 5, 1981 in Prineville to parents Wes and Meg Tucker. In 1983, the Tuckers moved to Madras, where Thomas attended all 12 years of school.
In grade school and junior high, he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball until an injury sidelined his sports activities.
Musically talented, he was an accomplished piano player and played trombone in the Madras High School pep band. In high school he took metals classes from teacher Jerome Mannenbach and was a member of the school's VICA vocational club, which built electric cars. He worked at Cliff's Auto Repair through the school-to-work program, and continued to work there and at Bright Wood Corporation after graduating from MHS in 1999.
Later, Thomas worked as a landscaper and framer throughout Central Oregon. In July 2005, he joined the U.S. Army and graduated from boot camp on Nov. 18. He was deployed to Iraq on Feb. 21, 2006.
Survivors include his parents, Wes and Meg Tucker of Madras; sister, Tayva Tucker of Prineville; nephews, Tanner Ebersole and Tyson Ebersole; grandparents, Esther Tucker of Arizona, Tom and Vivian Tucker of Mt. Vernon, Ore., and John and Carolyn Chandler of Prineville; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lowell and Pearl Hansen, and two aunts.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 1, at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center in Redmond. His father said that service will be for the nation and Central Oregon. A graveside service for family members and the Madras community will follow at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park cemetery. A reception will be held afterwards at Madras High School. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to the "Bring Tommy Home Fund," which has been set up at Columbia River Bank in Madras. The funds will be used to help Pfc. Thomas Tucker's classmates construct a permanent memorial in town, and the remainder will go to fund a local scholarship in his name, his parents said.
They noted the fund name was chosen when he was still missing in Iraq, before his death was confirmed. The Tuckers also said that funeral expenses have been taken care of by the military.

Debra Lynn Herringshaw
Culver resident Debra Lynn Herringshaw died March 29, 2003, at her home at the age of 44. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, April 11, at Culver Christian Church.

Steve Riley
Madras resident Steve Riley, the father of Phil Riley, passed away June 27, 2004. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 1, at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel, followed by a gathering at Living Hope Christian Center.

Arthur Bierly
Former Madras resident Arthur Ray Bierly died June 16, 2006, at St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., at the age of 58.
Mr. Bierly was born Feb. 18, 1948, in Klamath Falls to parents Amos and Loree (Buckingham) Bierly. He grew up and attended school in Madras. Following high school, he obtained a degree in marketing from Oregon State University.
On Nov. 29, 1975, he married Rae Wilson in Longview, Wash. They moved to Woodland, Wash. in 1976, and lived there 25 years before moving to Sparks, Nev. They had recently moved to Vancouver, Wash.
Mr. Bierly was employed as a heavy equipment part salesman at Evergreen Parts and Equipment at the time of his death.
He was a high priest of the Woodland Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and at his church was a Scout Master and worked with youth in the DARE program. He was also a member of Bishop Rick at the church and served in many other capacities. His other interests included collegiate wrestling and running sports.
Survivors include his wife, Rae Bierly of Vancouver, Wash.; mother and stepfather, Loree and Clayton Fox; sons, Chris, Aaron, and Mathew, all of Vancouver; daughters, Janet Eyres of Tall Timbers, Md., Debra Williams of San Jose, Calif., Angela Bierly of Los Angeles, Calif.; brothers, Kenneth Bierly of Salem, Rufus Bierly of Portland; sisters, Carol Bond of Long Beach, Wash., and Anita Lee of Salem; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held June 22, at the Woodland Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Arrangements were under the direction of Woodland Funeral Home.
