James Edward Bouvard

James Edward Bouvard, 67, Brookings, died April 27, 2002, at his home of natural causes.

Mr. Bouvard was born Dec. 2, 1934, in Wichita, Kan., to Robert and Rose Isom Bouvard.

He grew up in San Jose, Calif. In 1951, he joined the U.S. Air Force, and served until 1955. Following his military service he studied biology at San Jose State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1959.

After college he married Linda Hogue and they raised three children together. They were later divorced.

Mr. Bouvard was a government employee for most of his working career. In California, he worked for Livermore Labs and the National Park Service. After moving to Oregon, he was employed by the Oregon Public Health Department for 30 years. He assisted the department in a variety of positions, most recently as a nursing home inspector. He retired in 1992.

He met his second wife, Annie Wade, in 1993 and they moved to Brookings the following year. They were married Aug. 13, 1995. He was a member of the Sydney Croft Masonic Lodge and the Hood River Elks. Mr. Bouvard was also a long-time and active member of the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife, Annie of Brookings; son, Wesley R. Bouvard of Stockett, Mont.; daughters, Terra K, Bouvard Fairview; Kelly D. Sparks of Antioch, Calif. Also surviving are three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, at the Eagle Point National cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Judith Ellen Swanson

Judith Ellen Swanson, 60, Anchorage, Alaska, died April 27, 2002, at her home as a result of complications from heart problems.

She was born April 26, 1942, in Preston, Idaho.

Mrs. Swanson was a 1960 graduate of Brookings-Harbor High School and attended business school in Portland.

She and her husband, Jerry, were married Feb. 11, 1961, in Reno, Nev., and had lived in Anchorage since 1985. Mrs. Swanson briefly lived in Anchorage in 1945 to 1946 when her father worked for Tucker and Peterson Machine Works.

She was a homemaker and operated a day care out of her home for the past four years.

Mrs. Swanson was a long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi, Preceptor Delta Chapter in Anchorage and was a member of Quota International of Anchorage. She was a member of The Order of Eastern Star Satellite Chapter of Brookings and of the Anchorage Baptist Temple in Anchorage.

Mrs. Swanson loved life, family, and her day care children. She was always active with arts and crafts, loved music, mostly spiritual and county western, listening to her radio scanner, working on crossword puzzles, and using her computer for e-mail and browsing. She enjoyed both telling and reading good jokes. Hobbies also included cooking, photography and bowling.

She loved doing things for others and will be remembered and missed by family and friends.

Survivors include husband; sons, Brian and Bruce; mother, Edith Fox of Woodburn; brothers, Jerry Fox of Gresham and Richard Fox of Portland; grandson, Zyon Swanson; twin granddaughters Sierra and Darion Swanson of Medford; and Savannah of Port Orchard, Wash.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Craig, in 1963, and her father, Fred Fox, in 1992.

Memorial services were at Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary in Anchorage Thursday, April 27. A service will be planned in Medford at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family asks for memorial donations directed to Dogs for the Deaf, c/o Quota Club of Anchorage, 7810 Crescent Hill Circle, Anchorage, AK 99507 or Anchorage Center for Families/Healthy Families, Anchorage, 3745 Community Park Loop, Anchorage, AK 99508.

Larry Allen Mason

Larry Allen Mason, 50, Harbor, died April 27, 2002, at his home of natural causes.

He was born March 5, 1952, in Whittier, Calif., to Robert E. and Dolores "Dee" Mason.

Mr. Mason was raised in Whittier and later attended Pasadena City College. He was employed as a dental lab technician until ill health forced his retirement. He lived in Harbor for 10 years.

Survivors include mother, Dee Sloan of Whittier; brother, Michael Mason and wife Debbie of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; nieces, Breezy and MacKenzie Mason; nephew, Garrett Mason; stepsister, Mari McCall and her husband Guy of Long Beach, Calif.; and stepbrother, Stephen Sloan and his wife, Cathy, of Irvine, Calif.

A private service of remembrance will be scheduled at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Foster L. Wright

Obit dated: August 7, 2002

Foster L. Wright, 62, died July 1, 2002, at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland.

He was born Sept. 23, 1939, in California. He grew up in Northern California and Southern Oregon, but recently lived in Gold Beach and Brookings.

He worked briefly at the Port of Brookings Harbor and enjoyed the ocean and fishing.

Mr. Wright was a long-distance runner who continued to run after being severely burned. He ran in the Avenue of the Giants Run last spring.

He is survived by sons, Lewis F. Wright and Laurence Wright; daughters, Rebecca Wright, Nancy Simmons of California and Hilary and Emily Wright of Wyoming.

A memorial service will be at Gold Beach Church of Christ Friday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. with Jerry Dean officiating.

Lois Virgnia M. Coldwell

Obit dated: August 7, 2002

Lois Virginia M. Coldwell, 78, of Brookings, died Aug. 3, 2002, at Sutter Coast Hospital of natural causes.

She was born Nov. 8, 1923, in Oakland, Iowa, to Edith and Howard Miller. She grew up and received her early education in Oakland and Neola and attended Business College in Omaha, Neb.

She married Blaine M. Coldwell in Davis, Calif., in 1943. They moved to Talent in 1947, eventually settling in Ashland.

Mrs. Coldwell worked for the Ashland School District and Southern Oregon State College Health Center for 20 years. After retiring in 1982 she moved to Brookings.

She enjoyed salmon fishing, cross stitching, crocheting and sewing. She also liked reading and trying new recipes. She volunteered at the Brookings Visitor Center.

She was involved in the Elks Club and traveling with the Brookings Ramblin RV'ers.

She is survived by her husband; son and daughter-in-law, Ross A. and Bobbe Coldwell of Ashland; daughter and son-in-law, Michel A. and Steve Jones of Goldendale, Wash.; son, Jay H. Coldwell of Medford; daughter and son-in-law, Dana L. and Edwin R. Gilman of Klamath Falls, and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Clifford Miller.

A memorial service will be Thursday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m. conducted by Rev. Jerry Brickley at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield St.

An inurnment service will be Friday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. at Eagle Point National cemetery, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Carol Jean Zimmerman

Obit dated: August 3, 2002

Carol Jean Zimmerman, 47, Brookings, was found murdered in her home on July 26, 2002.

She was born Dec. 18, 1954, in Sussex, Wis., to Wilmer and Agnes Zimmerman.

She married Michael Rosenbaum in her early 20s and opened an Italian restaurant. She worked in Louisville, Colo., and later began her own house cleaning business.

Mrs. Zimmerman moved to Brookings and worked part-time for the Department of Motor Vehicles. She then accepted a full-time job at the DMV in Florence, then returned to Brookings when a full-time DMV position was available.

She was an avid photographer of black and white photographs and enjoyed the sea and lighthouses.

She also enjoyed hiking, cooking, entertaining, decorating, gardening and making gifts for her friends.

She was an active member of Star of the Sea Catholic Church and belonged to the Ladies Altar Society. She attended classes on the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Mrs. Zimmerman is survived by her daughter, Sarah of Colorado; sister, Helen of Sussex, Wis.; Ruth of Milwaukee, Wis.; Patti of St. Louis, Miss.; brothers, Willy of Hartland, Wis.; Jerry Zimmerman of Tomah, Wis.; Michael Zimmerman of Sussex, Wis.; Joey Zimmerman of Butler, Wis.; and grandchildren, Noah, Gabriella and Hope of Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services will be held Aug. 5, 2002 at the Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Brookings with Rosary at 10 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Etta "Pat" Pathena Reece

Obit dated: August 3, 2002

Etta "Pat" Pathena Reece, 68, Brookings, died at her home following a long illness.

She was born Aug. 22, 1933, in Stafford County, Kan., to Marion and Emma Reece. She was raised in Garden City, Kan., and graduated from Garden City Senior High School. After high school, she served in the Marine Corps for three years.

She moved to California and worked testing electronics for Datum Electronics until her retirement in 1994. She moved to Brookings in 1995.

Ms. Reece enjoyed yard work, antique shopping and home repairs.

She is survived by her sister, Lola and her husband, Frank Romine, of Garden City, Kan.; niece, Debbie and her husband Bruce Mullins, Mount Vernon, Ind., and friend, Joyce Crawford, Brookings.

A memorial service was Aug. 5, 2002, at Redwood Memorial Chapel. An inurnment will take place in Valley View cemetery in Garden City, Kan., at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Florence Givler

Obit dated: August 3, 2002

Florence Givler, 68, of Harbor died July 16, 2002.

She was born Aug. 19, 1933, in Springfield, Mass.

She married Sherman Givler on Sept. 1, 1951.

She is survived by her husband; sons Glen, Harbor; David, Florida; grandson Trenton and many friends.

Services were handled by Port Orford Funeral Service.

Arnold Kale Clawson

Obit dated: July 27, 2002

Arnold Kale Clawson, 77, of Brookings, died July 22, 2002, in his home from complications of heart disease.

He was born Jan. 20, 1925, in American Fork, Utah, to Arnold N. Clawson and Thora West Clawson.

He graduated from University of Utah in Salt Lake City with a degree in business administration.

He was a naval aviator in World War II and in Korea. He served more than 19 years in active and reserve duty.

Mr. Clawson was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, boater and fisherman. He owned a resort in West Yellowstone, Mont., for 27 years before retiring to Brookings in 1998.

He was a member of the American Legion for more than 50 years, serving three times as commander of Post 78. He was also a member of the local V.F.W. and Elks Lodge 1934.

He is survived by his wife, Terry Clawson of Brookings; unofficially adopted daughter Colleen Kearns McCann of Seattle; sons, Arnie Clawson of West Yellowstone, Mont., and Scott Clawson of Careywood, Idaho; brother, Dow W. Clawson of Sandy, Utah; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, six nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Clawson; and son, Michael Clawson, who was lost at sea during Vietnam.

Inurnment will be in Salt Lake City.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
