Mary A. Monroe
Feb. 17, 1914 - April 17, 1999

LEBANON - Mary A. Monroe, 85, of Lebanon died Saturday at the Albany Mennonite Home.

Born in Okarche, Okla., to Albert and Etta (Meredith) Berntsen, she married Reed Burton Monroe May 29, 1932, in Wichita, Kan.

The Monroes moved to Oregon in 1941 and lived in Albany, Sweet Home and Lebanon. Mr. Monroe died June 22, 1964.

Mrs. Monroe is survived by daughters Barbara Partridge of Eugene and Marilyn Titus of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; sons Robert of Lebanon and Richard of Parker, Colo.; and nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery.

Theresa M. Christley
November 19, 1925 - May 21, 2007

Theresa M. Christley, 81, of Sweet Home passed away Monday, May 21, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital. She was born on Nov. 19, 1925 in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania; the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Calao) DeCecio; fifth of their seven children.

She married Bob Christley June 10, 1944, after he returned home from WWII. They settled in Fontana, California where they raised four children; Bobby, Linda, Claire, and Laurie. A devoted Catholic, she believed in the power of prayer and always kept the Lord close to her heart.

She worked for many years at Keizer Steel in Fontana in the clerical field. Upon her retirement in 1983, Bob and Theresa moved to Sweet Home and spent the remainder of their lives together enjoying their family.

Theresa, “Dolly,” was a pillar of strength and support to all she knew. She will always be remembered for the constant love, care, and commitment she showed to her family and all the others she touched. Her love was never-ending and will always be carried on in all of our hearts.

Her legacy will live on within her daughters, Linda and Laurie, and husband, Les; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by son, Bobby; daughter, Claire and husband Bob.

The love of one will live on in the hearts of many forever...

Viewing will be Thursday, May 24, from 4-7 at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. Graveside service will be Friday at 11 am at Gilliland cemetery. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

Margaret Cason
Aug. 27, 1914 - April 17, 1999

TANGENT - Margaret Cason, 84, of Tangent died Saturday at Albany Care Center.

She was born in Steamboat Springs, Colo., to William and Lillian Penrose. She grew up in Colorado, lived in Santa Ana, Calif., and moved to Albany in 1939. She had lived in the area since.

Mrs. Cason especially enjoyed her family.

Surviving are sons Harry of Jefferson and Kenneth of Seattle; daughter Mondalee Lengkeek of Tangent; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A brother and two sisters died earlier.

A private, family graveside service will be at Willamette Memorial Park, with Pastor Jerry Christenson officiating.

Contributions in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.

Jessie Oleta Haney
Oct. 5, 1907 - April 17, 1999

BROWNSVILLE - Jessie Oleta Haney, 91, of Brownsville died Saturday at home.

She was born at Irish Bend, north of Monroe, to Hugh and Selma (Benson) Herron. She attended elementary school in Irish Bend and graduated in 1925 from Monroe High School. She attended Oregon State College and earned her teaching certificate from Oregon College of Education in Monmouth.

After teaching two years at Irish Bend, she attended the University of Washington in Seattle, studying fine arts. She kept house for brother Dr. Ralph Herron in Brownsville.

She married Emory Nye in 1933 in Corvallis. They lived in Newport until 1951, when they moved to Brownsville. Mr. Nye died in 1989.

She married Leo A. Haney Nov. 1, 1991, in Brownsville.

Mrs. Haney had served in the Oregon Women's Ambulance Corps in Newport during World War II.

She was an artist who enjoyed painting dogs and portraits of Eskimos. She belonged to St. Mary's Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are husband Leo, and three nieces and a nephew. Brother Ralph Herron died Aug. 9, 1984.

At Mrs. Haney's request, there will be no services. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Jessie Virginia Igo
Jan. 29, 1934 - April 16, 1999

CORVALLIS - Jessie Virginia Igo, 65, died Friday at Heart of the Valley Care Center in Corvallis.

She was born in Tracy, Minn., to Robert and Maude (Shultz) Reed. She grew up in Watertown, S.D., and moved to Eugene in 1962.

She married Lonnie "Joe" Igo Jan. 27, 1978, in Eugene, where they spent many years. Mrs. Igo moved to Corvallis two years ago.

She belonged to the Moose and Eagles lodges.

Surviving are husband Joe; sons Eugene "Gene" Cordell of Albany and Robert Cordell of Marshall, Mo.; daughters Virginia Seese of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Pamela Ewalt of Muscatine, Iowa; and brothers Dick Reed of Watertown, S.D., and Eugene Reed of Florida. There are 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Daughter Linda Weltch, brother Bud Reed and sisters Betty Feidon and Beverly Curry died earlier.

Private family services will be held. There will a reception in her memory from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Gene Cordell, 5115 Santiam Highway S.E., Albany. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mary Novak
May 2, 1904 - April 16, 1999

LEBANON - Mary Novak, 94, of Lebanon died Friday.

She was born in Lindsay, Neb., and attended Nebraska schools.

She married William Novak and they operated a hardware store in St. Paul, Minn. He died in 1960.

Mrs. Novak moved to Oregon. Until age 89, she worked as a housekeeper and cook in Portland and the Willamette Valley. She belonged to St. Pious X Catholic Church of Silverton.

Surviving are brothers Alphonse Schaecher of Mount Angel and Leo Schaecher, of Oregon City.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Unger Funeral Chapel, 229 Mill St., Silverton. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Pious X Catholic Church.

Mrs. Novak's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with burial following at Calvary cemetery in Mount Angel.

Contributions in her name may be made to St. Thomas Becket Academy of Veneta, in care of 18153 Powers Creek Loop Road N.E., Silverton, Ore. 97381.

Bonita J. Shanks
April 23, 1940 - April 17, 1999

LEBANON - Bonita J. Shanks, 58, of Lebanon died Saturday at Albany Care Center.

She was born in Lebanon, the daughter of Burl and Ione (Gregson) Shanks. She attended school at the Opportunities Center in Albany.

She worked at Oregon Freeze Dry through an Opportunities Center work program.

Miss Shanks belonged to and liked participating in the Lebanon First Baptist Church. She especially enjoyed working with AWANA and other youth groups. She participated in 4-H cooking and knitting and had shown her work at the Oregon State Fair.

She was active in Special Olympics, taking part in the baseball throw and bowling. She enjoyed needlework and made many embroidered pillow cases for friends.

She is survived by mother, Ione Shanks of Lebanon. Her father died March 31, 1995.

Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Huston-Jost Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Herb Anderson officiating.

Contributions in Miss Shanks' memory may be made to The Arc or to the Lebanon First Baptist Church, in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, Ore. 97355.

Dennis E. Evans
Oct. 23, 1951 - April 17, 1999

SCIO - Former Scio resident Dennis E. Evans, 47, died Saturday at his home in Bend.

He was born in Atchison, Kan., to Andrew and Anna Evans. He grew up and attended schools in Scio.

He and wife Carol were married five years ago in Scio.

Mr. Evans was a recreation machinist for the Forest Service at the Newberry Crater in the Deschutes National Forest.

He was an avid fan of the outdoors and enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and motorcycling. He was known for his talents as a story teller.

Surviving are wife Carol; mother Ann of Huron, Kan.; children Jennifer Nichols of Baker City, Laurel Bunch of Baker City, Scott Bunch of Bend and Stanley Kennedy of Lake Oswego; brothers Kenneth of Everest, Kan., and Andrew Jack of Scio, sisters Anna Kirkham of Cummings, Kan., Vivian Hamilton of Huron, Kan., Rosie Nolan of Turner, Donna Harter of Albany and Dorothy Sferlazza of Dallas. There are 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Niswonger, Reynolds & Tabor Funeral Home, 105 N.W. Irving St., Bend. A celebration of the life of Mr. Evans will be held all afternoon Thursday at the family home in Bend.

Wilma P. Kay
Dec. 15, 1904 - April 15, 1999

Wilma P. Kay, 94, of Albany died Thursday at home.

She was born in Wyeth to Charles and Viola (Gorton) Gray. She was married to Arthur Lovell and they later divorced. She married David Kay Oct. 10, 1940, in Stevenson, Wash.

The Kays spent most of their life in the Columbia Gorge at Cascade Locks. They were avid fans of salmon and steelhead fishing and enjoyed sport hunting in Eastern Oregon. Mr. Kay died March 3, 1990.

Mrs. Kay, a homemaker, had moved to Albany to be near her son. She belonged to the Rebekah Lodge and the Methodist Church of Cascade Locks.

Surviving are grandchildren Marilee Sapp and Mark Lovell, both of Albany, Marsha Thomas of Bend and Melissa Rex of Portland; sister Ida Woodward of Portland; and 11 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Her son, Norman Lovell, died in 1997.

Private, family services will be held. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Robert L. Dill
May 27, 1911 - April 15, 1999

Former Albany resident Robert L. Dill, 87, of Medford died Thursday at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Mr. Dill was born in Eugene. He grew up in Lawrence, Kan., and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1934.

He married Mary E. Hughes on Aug. 28, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They lived in Albany before moving to Medford in 1961.

Mr. Dill was an executive for the Boy Scouts of America in Washington and Oregon for six years. He worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for 34 years before retiring May 31, 1976.

He was a member and past president of the Telephone Pioneers Association. In Albany he was a past president of the Lions Club and a member of St. Johns Lodge AF&AM. In Medford he belonged to the Rogue Valley Knife and Fork Club and the First Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Dill taught church school classes was a church school superintendent in Albany. He also taught church school classes in Medford.

Surviving are wife Mary; daughter Susan Wilson of Arlington, Va.; brother William of St. Louis, Mo.; and a grandson.

A memorial service for Mr. Dill will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Medford First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Joyce DeGraaff officiating.

Grace Caroline Ivers
March 6, 1922 - April 16, 1999

Grace Caroline Ivers, 77, of Albany died Friday.

Mrs. Ivers was born in Laurium, Mich. to F. Paul and Gertrude (Hoatson) Petermann. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Church in Laurium. Her family moved to Eugene in 1937, where she studied nursing at the University of Oregon.

During World War II Mrs. Ivers worked for the telephone company at Camp Adair. She married Edward Ivers in Benton County in 1947.

Mrs. Ivers was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary and Benton County Farm Bureau.

She is survived by her husband; sons William Ivers of Beaverton and Robert Ivers of Albany; daughters Karen Eddy of Fairbanks, Alaska, Beverly Woodward of Portland, Pauline Ivers of Waldport and Rebecca Walts of Albany; brother David Petermann of Barstow, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Her parents and two brothers died earlier.

Visitation is today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at AAsum Funeral Home, 805 Ellsworth Street S.W. in Albany. A service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2515 Queen Ave. S.E. in Albany.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Evergreen Hospice or Holy Cross Lutheran Church building fund in care of the funeral home.
