Eugene Robert Martin
Dec. 16, 1927 — Oct. 6, 2004

Eugene Robert Martin, 73, of Sweet Home died Wednesday at Lebanon Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center.

He was born in Spiro, Wash., to Daniel Norton and Gladys (Byrd) Martin.

Eugene served in the U.S. Navy, and worked as a log truck driver.

He married Mary Barnes. She died in 2001.

Eugene is survived by daughters Joyce Neal and Judy Sylvester, both of Lebanon; sister Shirley Bradley of Mill City; three grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

One brother preceded him in death.

No services are scheduled at this time. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Theodore M. Porter
June 9, 1908 — Oct. 12, 2004

Theodore "Ted" Marion Porter, 96, of Milwaukie died Tuesday in Milwaukie.

He was born in Goshen, Wash., the son of Marion and Harriet Porter who had been homesteaders in Winthrop, Wash. Ted attended schools in Winthrop and Monroe School System.

As a young man, he worked in timber related jobs for 13 years. He came to Oregon in 1940.

On Aug. 8, 1942, he married L.C. Buhite in Portland. They lived in the St. Johns area of Portland until moving to Milwaukie 11 years ago. L.C. died June 8, 1998.

Ted was a millwright for 20 years at the Old Portland Woolen Mills. After its closure in 1960, he was with B.P. Furniture until his retirement in 1973.

Ted was widely known for his pocketknife art wood carvings. Many pieces have been given to museums, family and friends.

He is survived by daughter Gloria Schneider of California; stepsons Dick and Elmo Marquette, both of Portland; stepdaughter Patricia Kahn of Milwaukie; sisters Pearl Allen of Washington and Rose Jones of Indiana, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Providence cemetery near Scio.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Shrine Hospitals for Crippled Children in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, OR 97355.

Adella Wood
March 25, 1921 — Oct. 31, 2004

Adella Mathilda Nord Wood, 83, of Albany and Coronado, Calif., died Sunday in Coronado. She suffered a stroke and died of complications during surgery.

Adella was born in Wolverton, Minn. She was the 14th child of Charles and Julia (Eklo) Nord, Swedish and Norwegian immigrants who were pioneer farmers in the Red River Valley. Raised on the family farm, Adella was active in 4-H and graduated from Wolverton High School in 1938.

Raising chickens to put herself through nursing school at Trinity Hospital in Minot, N.D., Adella received her degree as a registered nurse in 1943. She served as an Army nurse during World War II and was stationed at Schick General Hospital in Clinton, Iowa, until her honorable discharge as a second lieutenant in March 1946.

Adella moved to the West Coast where she met her husband, European Theater veteran Jack H. Wood, in the hospital emergency room of Puyallup, Wash., where she was working. They were married in Wolverton on Dec. 27, 1947.

They moved to Astoria in 1951 where Adella was Director of Nursing at Columbia Memorial Hospital, and Jack served as the Clatsop County Agricultural Extension agent. Adella was active in their congregation at Trinity Lutheran Church, and was a 10-year 4-H Club leader.

In 1970, the family moved to Columbia, Mo., where Adella earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Missouri. She graduated from the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center in 1975 with a master's degree in nursing.

In 1972, they found themselves in Albany where Adella began teaching in the nursing program at Linn-Benton Community College. She became chairman of the Nursing Department in 1978.

Retiring in 1980, Adella continued to work as a nursing consultant in the lab and volunteered with teaching and testing nursing students. She was very active in Faith Lutheran Church of Albany, serving as the parish nurse and as a Stephen Minister. She was also an active member of PEO and a 50-year member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Adella and Jack traveled extensively with Rural Route Tours and the Friendship Force, a goodwill ambassador program. Her travels included a final trip to Europe that concluded the week before her death. Adella was preceded in death by Jack in February 1990.

Survivors include her sons, Gregory B. Wood of Seattle, and John E. Wood and his wife Karen of Coronado; daughter Julianne C. Wood-Rethwill and her husband Craig Rethwill of Portage, Mich,; sister Judith C. Nord of Fargo, N.D.; grandchildren Conner and Brooks Rethwill, and Kristiana and Jack Wood; and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed greatly by all who had the honor of knowing her.

Funeral services in Coronado were held today at Humphrey Mortuary. Albany services will begin with viewing at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church, followed by a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Laurie Lofsvold officiating. The funeral will conclude at Willamette Memorial Park with the U.S. Army and American Legion Posts 10 and 51 rendering military honors.

Memorial contributions in Adella's memory are suggested to Faith Lutheran Church and the Oregon State University 4-H Club Foundation, directly or in care of AAsum Funeral Home.

Ruth Lavern Chitwood
Nov. 27, 1928 — Dec. 1, 2004

Ruth Lavern Chitwood, 76, of Albany died Wednesday.

She was born in Royal, Ark., to James Odle and Ruby (James) Duckett.

Ruth married Marion "R.B." Chitwood on Sept. 1, 1943 in Independence. He died Aug. 15, 2003.

Family and friends were very important to Ruth.

She is survived by her sons, Wayne Chitwood of Lebanon and Dwight Chitwood of Oakridge, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Andreason's Cremation & Burial Service in Springfield is handling arrangements.

Waymon A. Buerge
July 7, 1912 — Dec. 8, 2004

Waymon A. Buerge of Salem died Wednesday.

He was born in Mena, Ark.

He moved to Santa Monica, Calif., and spent most of his childhood there.

He moved to Oregon and owned Albany Dental Lab.

After retiring, he enjoyed working with rocks he had collected.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Lillian; daughters Bonnie Rich Hamiston, Mary King and Christine Partridge; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Alliance Church on Fifth and Gaines N.E.

Contributions may be sent to the charity of choice or Salem Alliance Church in his memory.

Gary Wallace Pratt
Sept. 25, 1934 — Nov. 24, 2005

Gary Wallace Pratt, 71, died Thursday, Nov. 24, at his home in Waldport (Bayshore) after an extended illness.

He was born in Centralia, Wash., to Betty Marie Shawver and Wallace Raymond Pratt. In 1944, Gary and his family moved to Yakima, Wash., where he received his education.

He married Marilyn Wurl on Nov. 24, 1954, in Yakima.

Gary was involved in auto sales from 1954 to 1961 in Yakima. He moved to Corvallis in 1961, where he remained in auto sales until 1978. His extensive training and experience led him to achieve many top sales awards as the sales manager/general manager of Kerns Motor Company, Signer Motors, Paul’s Auto Workstat and Slauson Ford, Independence. He was owner/manager of two small used car lots, and owned and operated Kimo’s Drive Inn on Ninth Street during 1972 and 1973.

He moved to Waldport (Bayshore) in 1978 and in 1980 began a new career in real estate with Waldport Realty. He retired in 1998. While at Waldport Realty, he was recognized as top producer many times and was well known along the Oregon Coast.

Gary loved hunting, fishing, crabbing, camping and spending time at his cabin, “Pratt’s Place,” on the Alsea River. In his later years, he enjoyed watching western movies and football on TV, and having visitors and phone calls.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Marilyn; daughter Pam Burright and husband Kent of Corvallis; son Jeff Pratt and wife Debbie of Corvallis; grandchildren Kevin Burright, Kristy Burright and Tammy Pratt; great-grandchildren Brittney and Brody; brother Lane Pratt and wife Shirlee of Olympia, Wash.; sister Myrna Halverson and husband Joe of Whitehall, Mont.; a large extended family, and numerous friends. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Savior Lutheran Church (just north of the bridge), 38 Bayview Road, Waldport. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 2458, Waldport, OR 97394, or the Seal Rock Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 220, Seal Rock, OR 97376.

Edith Roepke
Feb. 3, 1922 - June 4, 2004

Edith Mae Roepke, 82, a former 53-year resident of Albany, died Friday morning at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene.

Born in Springfield, Mo., to parents John Washington and Gertrude Leona (Root) Cooksey, Edith was proud of her father's American Indian heritage.

After attending school in Springfield, she married Charles Louis Roepke on June 25, 1941, in Springfield.

Late during World War II, the Roepkes moved with their toddler son to San Diego, where their two girls were born. The family moved in 1950 to the Knox Butte area, where they bought their home of over 50 years.

Edith worked at Britton's Department Store in Lebanon, then at PayLess and JC Penney's in Albany before working for years at the Mayfair-Erickson Market on Pacific.

She was a member of Calvary Community Church, where she enjoyed working with the youth and singing in the choir.

Edith loved her family, and liked nothing better than cooking for them and friends. She won first prize at the Linn County Fair for her lemon meringue pie and was famous for her peanut butter fudge. She also enjoyed sewing and bowling.

In October, Edith and Charles moved to an assisted living facility in Eugene.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Charles of Eugene; son Charles M. Roepke of Albany; daughters Nancy Shields of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Ann Witkin of Eugene; brother Jim Cooksey of Lancaster, Calif.; sisters Louise Shepard of Topeka, Kan., Leona Beeves of San Diego, Betty Williams of Springs, Texas, and Hazel Truax and Franny Orsborn, both of Albany; and 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Edith was preceded in death by brothers Richard Cooksey, who died at age 3, Marion McKenzie, Walt Cooksey and LeRoy Cooksey; and sister Helen Scott.

Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at AAsum Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Community Church, 35674 Knox Butte Road, followed by vault interment at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the youth program at Calvary Community Church and to the Alzheimer's Association.

Pearly LaVern Jameson
Jan. 29, 1944 - July 12, 2004

Pearly was born in Little Rock, Ark., the daughter of James and Velva (Burlison) Morris.

She was a member of Kings Circle Assembly of God. She loved the ocean and her family.

Pearly is survived by daughters Tina Henderson, Andrea Liddell and Sarietha Skelton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; mother Velva Morris; brothers Tim Morris, Jim Morris and Victor Morris; sisters Joy Tidwell, Ellen Stewart and Virginia Sater.

She was preceded in death by her father, and son John Henderson.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Jefferson cemetery. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Nicolaas Kamlade
May 2, 1928 - July 13, 2004

Nick Kamlade Sr., passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday.

Nick was born in Waubrugge, Netherlands and moved to New Zealand after World War II.

One year later, he arranged for his "rose for every season," Anna Schots, to come and they were married in 1953.

While in New Zealand, they were blessed with two sons, Nick Jr. and Terry.

America beckoned and they immigrated to California in 1958 where he worked milking cows. Again, they were blessed with a daughter, Debbie.

It was also at this time in their lives that Nick gave his life to Jesus Christ.

God also gave them a desire to own a dairy. Nick found his home in Oregon at a dairy named "Morning Mist Dairy," and they were blessed once more with a daughter, Lisa.

Nick is now in his eternal home with Christ Jesus and his grandson, Tyson.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; children Nick Jr., Terry, and Debbie King of Jefferson, and Lisa Boer of Kenmore, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; sister Leis Herlaar of Voorschoten, Netherlands; and brother Maarten Kamlade of Russel, New Zealand.

A celebration of life will be at noon Friday at Sunnyslope Christian Reformed Church in Salem. A private burial will be held.

Memorial contributions can be made to the church, 197 Hrubetz Road S.E., Salem.

Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom in Salem is handling arrangements.
