Juanita McCurdy
June 3, 1927 - March 4, 2005

Juanita McCurdy, 77, of Silverton, otherwise known as “Nita” or “Grandma Nita” died on Friday, March 4, 2005, of ovarian cancer. She was diagnosed with cancer shortly before Christmas.
Juanita was born in Flagstaff, Ariz., on June 3, 1927, to Joe and Edna Lowry. Her family moved to California in 1933, where she lived in the town of Lemon Grove near San Diego. Even though she grew up during the Depression, she had a happy childhood. Her teenage years were spent during World War II, so memories of gas rationing and blackouts were mixed with those of high school proms and football games.
In 1948, she graduated from San Diego State College and married a young soldier named John (Jack) McCurdy. They spent two years in occupied Japan, where their son was born.
Juanita and John later had two daughters. The next several years were spent in a flurry of children’s activities, camping and boating trips. Juanita became a widow in 1974, when her husband died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 50. She never remarried .
Nita’s life revolved around children – her own and everyone else’s. As a young woman she taught Sunday school, and later worked as a teaching assistant, a Head Start preschool teacher, and an after school day care teacher. She was extraordinarily devoted to her kids and grandkids, and all their friends.
One of Nita’s lifelong passions was photography. From her first “Brownie” box camera to her fancy digital, she rarely went anywhere without taking photographs. She traveled to Hawaii, England, Norway and Alaska, snapping pictures every step of the way. She had her own color darkroom, and took many portraits of friends, relatives and children. In more recent years she discovered digital photography, and spent countless hours at her computer working on her pictures.
When she visited her daughter in Silverton, she fell in love with the area and decided to stay to help take care of her youngest grandkids. She moved to Silverton in 1992. After living most of her life in an arid climate, she loved the green hills, the creeks and the cooler weather of Oregon. For the last dozen or so years, Nita, along with her trusty camera, attended nearly every one of her grandsons’ soccer games, baseball games, swimming lessons and school events.
Survivors include brother Don Lowry, of Redlands, Calif.; son Michael McCurdy, of Montclair, Calif.; daughters Karen Garner, of Ontario, Calif., and Terry Woodall, of Scotts Mills; and grandchildren Eric Woodall, Jake Woodall, John Woodall, Matt McCurdy and Tamara McCurdy. We will miss her every day for the rest of our lives.
At Juanita’s request, no services will be held. Remembrances may be sent to the children’s charity of your choice, or to Boy Scout Troop 485 of Silverton.
