Billie Opal Miller
The graveside service for Billie Opal Miller will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery. Pastor Dan McCulloch of the Medford Seventh-day Adventist Church will officiate.

Mrs. Miller, 88, formerly of Medford, died Friday (Oct. 25, 2002) in Upland, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born March 20, 1914, in Lexington, Okla., to Charles and Estelle Carr. On April 8, 1939, in Glendale, Calif., she married Hillman H. Miller, who died in 2000. They lived in the Rogue Valley for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Miller was a volunteer for the Salvation Army and the Veterans Affairs Domiciliary in White City.

She was a member of the Medford Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She is survived by a brother, George Carr, Lexington, Okla. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara; a sister; and three brothers.

Grace E. Shipley
The memorial service for Grace E. Shipley will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Royal Mobile Estates Club House in Jacksonville.

Ms. Shipley, 80, of Jacksonville, died Oct. 20, 2002, at Three Fountains Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Medford.

She was born Jan. 8, 1922, in Toronto.

Ms. Shipley worked in scientific research with radio isotopes at U.C. Berkeley Cal Lab from 1968 to 1975. She moved to the Rogue Valley 15 years ago from Paradise, Calif. Locally, she owned and operated Mai-Tai's, making neckties in Jacksonville from 1990 until her retirement in 1998.

She was a member of the Jacksonville Quilters and Sojourner.

Ms. Shipley was a familiar sight in Jacksonville, driving her golf cart around town. She enjoyed wood carving, sewing and painting.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Brie Mahar, Phoenix, and Russ Bohall, Portland. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susie Lanfear, on Sept. 18, 2002.

Martha 'Bobbie' Sikes
The memorial service for Martha "Bobbie" Sikes will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eagle Point National cemetery. The Rev. James Larson will officiate.

Mrs. Sikes, 88, of Eagle Point, died Friday (Oct. 25, 2002) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Mission for Children, Carmen Serdan, Mexico, c/o Applegate Christian Fellowship, P.O. Box 1090, Jacksonville, OR 97530.

She was born May 30, 1914, in Alamorgordo, North Mexico, to Thomas and Helen Boatwright. She married Dan Hutchinson, and later divorced. In January 1941, in Colorado Springs, Colo., she married Clifford "Kip" Sikes, while he was stationed in the military. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1949 after he returned from the military. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Sikes was a homemaker. She enjoyed her family.

Survivors include three sons, Don Hutchinson, Rogue River, Dick Hutchinson, Eagle Point, and Randy Sikes, San Diego; a daughter, Sharron Morgan, Eagle Point; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter; seven sisters; and a brother.

Kay O. Smith
Kay O. Smith, 86, of Gold Hill, died Monday (Oct. 28, 2002) at her home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Parkway, Portland, OR 97201.

Mrs. Smith was born May 16, 1916, in San Diego, to Albert and Adelaide (Lauterbach) Walker. On Dec. 31, 1934, in Pasadena, Calif., she married Linmore Smith, who died in 1976. They moved to the Rogue Valley 52 years ago from Pasadena, Calif.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and agate collecting.

Survivors include a niece, Vera Wentz, San Diego. She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Ruby Laura Davis
The memorial service for Ruby Laura Davis will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Southwest Medford Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Don Farnsworth will officiate.

Mrs. Davis, 72, of Medford, died Friday (Oct. 25, 2002) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Southwest Medford Church of the Nazarene, 1481 S. Columbus Ave., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Nov. 3, 1929, in Bismarck, N.D., to Paul and Adena Gross. She moved to Portland in 1948 from Denhoff, N.D. In October 1951, in Anchorage, Alaska, she married Paul Davis, who died in 1985.

Mrs. Davis worked in payroll accounting for Columbia Steel Casting Company, retiring in 1994. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1995.

She was a member of the Southwest Medford Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Davis enjoyed hiking and camping, crocheting, cooking and reading.

Survivors include three daughters, Tina Bork and Linda Davis, both Medford, and Paula Cotton, Anchorage, Alaska; a son, Dean, Medford; a brother, Darwin Gross, Portland; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Duncan; two brothers, Harry and Ronald Gross; and a sister, Adeline Froeber.

Gerrold V. Bailey
Gerrold V. Bailey, 69, of Medford, died Oct. 22, 2002, in Medford. Private inurnment will be held at Hill and Dunn cemetery in Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the U.S. Marine Corps League or Toys for Tots, c/o Bud Cullmer, Toys for Tots coordinator, 6634 Domino Road, Central Point, OR 97502.

Mr. Bailey was born April 10, 1933, in Atascadero, Calif., to Arthur and Laura Bailey. He moved to the Rogue Valley in the early 1940s from California.

He was a freelance artist.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Mr. Bailey enjoyed stamp collecting and was a volunteer for the Southern Oregon Historical Society.

Survivors include a daughter, Druscilla Holly, San Francisco; two brothers, Roy, Medford, and Richard A., Sacramento, Calif.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Andrew.

Donna J. Schneider
Donna J. Schneider, 62, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (Oct. 27, 2002) at Three Rivers Community Hospital after a brief battle with lung cancer. A private service will be held.

Mrs. Schneider was born Feb. 21, 1940, in Sommerville, Mass. On Sept. 9, 1962, she married William L. Schneider, who preceded her in death.

They moved to Grants Pass in 1976, where she worked for Litton Guidance and Controls Systems, General Instrument and most recently for Get-N-Go Market.

Survivors include a daughter, Caprice Sentelle, Elm Creek, Neb.; two sons, David Dunning, Ravenna, Neb., and Donald Dunning, Bonita, Calif.; two brothers, Frank Leard, Tustin, Calif., and Edwin Leard, Grants Pass; six granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley, Grants Pass.

Olive Mae Wait Manley
Olive Mae Wait Manley, 94, of Corvallis, formerly of Medford, died Monday (Oct. 28, 2002) in Corvallis. The service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Manley was born Feb. 11, 1908, near Shabbona, Mich., to Daniel W. and Luella J. (Smith) Wait. The family moved to Port Huron, Mich., in 1920 for 10 months, then to a farm near Sandusky, Mich., where she graduated from high school in 1924. After attending Ypsilanti Normal School, now Eastern Michigan University, for one year and a summer, she taught school in a rural, one-room school near Sandusky for two years.

She then taught in small-town schools until 1931, when she married Everett T. Manley, who died in 1962. They moved to Lincoln Park, Mich., where they lived until they moved to Medford in 1946.

In 1950, Mrs. Manley began teaching for School District 6 in Central Point. She taught elementary school until 1956, when she and her family returned to Sandusky, Mich., for three years. In 1959, she and her husband returned to Central Point, where she resumed teaching until her retirement in 1972.

During that period, she also completed her bachelor's degree at what is now Southern Oregon University in Ashland.

She was affiliated with the Retired Teachers Association and the First Methodist Church in Medford.

Survivors include a son, Edward E., Corvallis; a daughter, Barbara Manley Steel, Morgantown, W.Va.; a brother, Haward S. Wait, Wallace, N.C.; and one grandchild. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Arrangements: DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel, Corvallis.

Freda C. Rising
The committal service for Freda C. Rising will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Eagle Point National cemetery. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn will officiate. A celebration of her life will follow at the home of Don and Judy Livingood, 6311 Hillcrest Road, Medford.

Mrs. Rising, 82, of Medford, died Friday (Oct. 25, 2002) in Medford.

She was born Dec. 15, 1919, in Howpow, Pa., to William Earl and Helen Estella (Rafter) Martin. On May 28, 1949, in La Grange, Ohio, she married Howard G. Rising, who survives. They moved to Medford in 1966 from Anaheim, Calif.

Mrs. Rising worked in retail sales and layaway/credit for The Broadway in Anaheim, Calif., and for J.C. Penney in Medford.

She enjoyed her family, reading, ballroom dancing and needle crafts.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Judy Livingood, Medford, and Karen Endsley-Loll, Central Point; a stepson, Glenn Rising, Oberlin, Ohio; a brother, Glenn Martin, Buffalo, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lea Rae Loll; and a granddaughter, Merry Denison.

Lucy Marie Snyder
A Mass of Christian Burial for Lucy Marie Snyder will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Anne Catholic Church in Grants Pass. The Rev. Gregory Moys will officiate.

Mrs. Snyder, 93, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (Oct. 27, 2002) at an adult foster care home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, 220 S.W. H St., Grants Pass, OR 97526, or Lovejoy Hospice, 939 S.E. Eighth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

She was born Oct. 26, 1909, in St. Marys, Pa. On May 28, 1938, in St. Marys, Pa., she married John 'Jack' Snyder, who died in 1996. They moved to California in 1943 from Pennsylvania.

Mrs. Snyder was a hostess at J.W. Robinson's in California. She retired in 1978. She moved to Cottonwood, Ariz., in 1984, and to Grants Pass in 1992.

She was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, St. Anne Altar Society and the Oregon Council of the Bird.

Mrs. Snyder enjoyed people and making them laugh.

Survivors include a son, Dennis G., Ashland; a daughter, Jackie Hall, Grants Pass; a sister, Ruth Fritz, St. Marys, Pa.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Pastor John Gomez
A celebration of the life of Pastor John Gomez will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Joy Christian Fellowship in Medford. Pastor Steve Schmelzer will officiate.

Pastor Gomez, 48, of Medford, died Thursday (Oct. 24, 2002) in Glide.

Memorial contributions may be made to Armor Bearers of Joy Christian Fellowship, 2715 Table Rock Road, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Oct. 18, 1954, in San Antonio, to Daniel and Anita (Taylor) Gomez. On Nov. 29, 1975, in Santa Ana, Calif., he married Gwen Biswell, who survives.

Pastor Gomez was the associate pastor of Joy Christian Fellowship in Medford.

He enjoyed fishing, reading and praying for people.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Andrea Gomez and Sarah Nagy, both Medford; his mother, Anita Gomez, Fullerton, Calif.; three brothers, Daniel, Hominy, Okla., Ray, Moreno Valley, Calif., and Roger, Garden Grove, Calif.; a sister, Sandra Gomez, Fullerton, Calif.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel.

David Eugene VanMeter
The memorial service for David Eugene VanMeter will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Lake Almanor Community Church in Chester, Calif.

Mr. VanMeter, 55, Medford, formerly of Chester, Calif., died Friday (Oct. 25, 2002) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 13, 1947, in Salinas, Calif., to Chester and June VanMeter. On Oct. 30, 1928, in Chester, Calif., he married "Danese" Beverly Baker, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley from Chester, Calif., to retire.

Mr. VanMeter was co-owner with his son, Corey, of VanMeter Ag, a logging company in Chester, Calif.

He attended the Assembly of God in Chester.

Mr. VanMeter enjoyed fishing, hunting, his children and his work.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, David VanMeter Jr. and Corey VanMeter, both Susanville, Calif., and JonThompson Jr., Medford; two daughters, Shannon Lucero, Medford, and Shelly VanMeter, in Washington; a brother, James, Westwood, Calif.; two sisters, Becky Williams, Susanville, Calif., and Marilyn Rolland, Rocklin, Calif.; and 13 grandchildren.
