Dean joined the US Navy during WW II, serving from 1944- 46 in the Asian sector. As an Aviation Ordinanceman he received an Honorary Discharge with medals for his service: Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal.

He attended Southern Oregon College of Education from 1946-47 and Cal-Aero-Technical Institute in Burbank, California from 1947-49, earning an A & E Certificate in 1949.
