Michael Vincent McGrath

Michael Vincent McGrath, a resident of Scott Twp. died Saturday, November 10, 2007 at home. He was the husband of Margaret Pierson McGrath and the couple was married for 58 years. Born in Jersey City, NJ,, he was the son of the late Daniel and Josephine Huff McGrath.

He attended Fordham University with an accelerated graduation due to a call to service for WWII. He was a decorated lieutenant of the Army Air Corps: The 324th Fighter Group serving in the North African and European Theatres piloting P47s. Michael grew up in New York City and was employed for 37 years at the Fidelity and Deposit Company of Baltimore, where he met his wife. He retired to his home and family in Connecticut in 1983 and cared for his grandchildren, and provided them a supplemental education unobtainable in the school system. He was an active participant of Our Lady Of Grace Church in Bantam, Ct. He and his wife moved into the home of his sons in Pennsylvania in 1996 and he embraced beautiful Pennsylvania from that moment. In all this time, he was a power of example for almost 50 years to other recovering individuals. He was a devoted husband and died peacefully at home with his family present. He was a source of joy and laughter to all who knew him. The family would like to express their gratitude to the VNA Hospice(CMC Scranton) of Lackawanna County and particularly to Amy Fulkerson, who made him a part of her family and gave us the gift of more time with him. They provided support and encouragement to the family and showed the real meaning of care. Originally a patient four years ago(Marion Community Hospital) he was so rejuvenated by their care enough to be discharged and to maintain the highest quality of life. In the last four years, he enjoyed hours sitting outside by the pool with his family and friends telling stories and singing old songs. He relished car rides anywhere and everywhere. In his recent, final experience in hospice, he was given the opportunity to spend his final days in great comfort, dignity and love in the embrace of his family and the incredible team at VNA. He was a communicant of Corpus Christi Church, Montdale.

Also surviving are three  daughters: Margaret McGrath, Justus, Patricia McPhee, Chittenden, VT., and Virginia Doherty, Morris, CT., and two sons Vincent, Justus and Daniel, Montrose, four grandchildren Daniel and Michael Lefebvre, Ghislane Hockensmith and Jacqueline Turro and two great grandchildren Alexa and Ryan McPhee.
