Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Mrs. Ruth Grace Stine Wachter
Mrs. Ruth Grace Stine Wachter, 100, of Frederick, died on Sunday, July 12, 2009, at the Vindobona Nursing Home in Braddock Heights. She was the wife of the late Clyde C. Wachter Sr.

She was born in Middletown on Oct. 27, 1908, and was a daughter of the late George Henry and Fannie Cramer Stine.

Mrs. Wachter had worked for the Sanitary Laundry and JCPenny, both in Frederick, and was a homemaker for many years. She loved to sew and made much of her own clothing. Mrs. Wachter was a long-time member of the Frederick Church of the Brethren and the Home Builders Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Wachter is survived by one son, Clyde C. Wachter Jr., and wife, Mary, of Braddock Heights; three grandsons, Gary W. Wright, Robin O. Wachter and Chad J. Wachter; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She will also be remembered by a special friend, Carolyn A. Marx of Frederick, and a former daughter-in-law, Eva Wright. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Dixon, Virgie Moser and Myrtle Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, with the family receiving friends one hour before the service. The Rev. Sandi Evans Rogers will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick, MD 21701.

Richard T. Swope
Richard T. Swope, 87, a resident for the past several years of the Reeder's Memorial Home in Boonsboro, Md. and formerly of 316 N. Mulberry St., Hagerstown, Md. died at 9:25 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 in the nursing home.

Born May 17, 1920 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Herbert and Jennie (Cordell) Swope.

Mr. Swope retired from the Maugansville Lumber Co. and had also worked at the former Stickel & sons Feed Mill.

He was a member of the State Line United Methodist Church, where he had been a member of the adult Sunday School class.

Mr. Swope was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

In his earlier years he enjoyed bowling.

His wife, Ethel Louise (Smith) Swope, died Aug. 22, 1995.

He is survived by two sons, Larry R. Swope of Smithsburg, Md. and Melvin L. Swope of Waynesboro; five sisters, Verna Brandenburg and Evelyn Downs, both of Hagerstown, Betty Burger of Greencastle, Wilda Syan of Laurel, Md. and Catherine Wallace of Texas; one brother, Bennett Swope of Ashley, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah J. Trumpower.

Services were held the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 6 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Dwaine Krebs officiating.

Burial was in the Rest Haven cemetery, Hagerstown.

Melvin B. Carbaugh
Melvin B. Carbaugh, 89, a resident of Chester River Manor, Chestertown, Md., and formerly of 12068 Cool Hollow Road, Greencastle, died at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, in the nursing home. He had been in failing health for the past two years.

Born Nov. 13, 1918 in South Mountain, he was the son of the late Oscar A. and Anna (Eichholtz) Carbaugh.

Mr. Carbaugh graduated from Quincy High School with the Class of 1936. He later attended Temple University, Philadelphia.

He and his wife, the late Esther Jane (Fortney) Carbaugh, were married Aug. 6, 1938 in Hagerstown, Md. They lived in the Waynesboro area until 1959, when they moved to Glen Burnie, Md. They moved to Greencastle in 1982. Mrs. Carbaugh died Sept. 17, 1998. Mr. Carbaugh moved to Church Hill, Md., to live with his daughter in August 2006. He entered the nursing home in February 2007.

In his early life, Mr. Carbaugh worked in construction in Harrisburg. He later worked for Landis Tool Company, Waynesboro, and Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing, Hagerstown. He was last employed as a Procurement Manager for Westinghouse of Glen Burnie from 1959 until his retirement in October 1982.

He was a member of the Waynesboro Country Club and the Seventh Day Adventist Church, both of Waynesboro.

Mr. Carbaugh enjoyed playing golf, bowling and was an avid bird watcher.

He is survived by two  daughters, Nancy J. Wolfenbarger of Landenburg and Tana R. Williams of Church Hill; four sons, Lonny B. Carbaugh of Waynesboro, Orrin L. Carbaugh of Waynesboro, Allen Jay Carbaugh of Greencastle and Perry G. "Pete" Carbaugh Sr. of Waynesboro; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two greatgreat grandchildren; one brother, Dale Carbaugh of New Holland; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Nelson Eugene Carbaugh.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro with Pastor Dave Woodruff officiating.

Burial will follow in Strang's cemetery, South Mountain.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15 in the funeral home.

Lewis K. Bitner
Lewis K. Bitner, 88 of 12005 Koons Road, Waynesboro, died at 9:20 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2008 in the Waynesboro Hospital. He had been in declining health the past year.

Born June 26, 1919 in Greencastle, he was the son of the late Robert B. and Avis G. Bell) Bitner.

He and his wife, Evelyn I. Barnett) Bitner were married Feb. 27, 1946.

Mr. Bitner was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle, where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class and served as a treasurer of the Sunday school.

He was employed by the former Leonard Fry Stone Quarry in Zullinger, and last was superintendent for Martin Marietta, Pinesburg, Md. stone quarry.

He attended Antrim Grove and Greencastle schools.

Mr. Bitner was a United States Army Veteran of World War II serving in Europe, Africa and the Middle East theaters.

He was a member of the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373 of Greencastle and a member of the national AARP.

Mr. Bitner enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by a daughter, Emma L. Berger of Waynesboro; two sons, Robert L. Bitner of Greenville, N.C. and Roger W. Bitner of Greencastle; a brother, Arthur Bitner of Waynesboro; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Walter "Pat" Bitner, and three sisters, Julia Green, Anna Jumper and Leah "Peg" Swisher.

Services were held the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 8 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greencastle, with Revs. Martin H. Horn, Donald Bohn and Joseph Baer officiating.

Burial with military graveside honors provided by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post 1599 Honor Guard was in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Louis W. "Bill" Kohler
Louis W. "Bill" Kohler, 74, of 11835 Orchard Lane, Waynesboro, died at 12:07 a.m., Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, in his home following a battle with leukemia.

Born October 1, 1933 in Allentown, he was the son of the late Henry A. and Sarah L. "Sally" (Rose) Kohler. He and his family moved to the Waynesboro area in 1937.

Mr. Kohler was a graduate of Waynesboro High School with the Class of 1951. He later received his Bachelor of Science Degree in History and Social Studies from Shippensburg State College in 1961 and his Master's Degree in Education in 1969.

He served in the United States Army Signal Corps from Oct. 3, 1956 until Aug. 28, 1958.

He and his wife of 47 years, Mrs. A. Marie "Dolly" (Knepper) Kohler, were married June 24, 1960 in Waynesboro. They moved to their present residence in 1999.

Mr. Kohler began his working career as a paperboy for the Washington Times Herald from 1946 to 1950. He later was employed as a clerk for Ervin's Stationary, Waynesboro, from 1950 to 1951 and at Linde's Sunoco in Baltimore, MD from 1951 to 1952. From 1952 to 1955, he took his trade at Landis Tool Company, Waynesboro. He began his teaching career in Social Studies in the Chambersburg Area School District from 1961 to 1966 and later at Waynesboro Area Senior High School from 1966 until his retirement in 1993. He also was employed part time at the front desk for Waynesboro YMCA from 1962 to 1965 and worked as a painting contractor in the local area for many years. He was last employed part time for Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Mr. Kohler coached Waynesboro Area Little League teams, served as basketball coach for both Waynesboro Area Senior High School and East Junior High School, also of Waynesboro. He also was the voice of the Waynesboro Indians football team for over 30 years.

He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, where he served as Sunday School teacher and was a member of Crider Men's Sunday School Class.

Mr. Kohler also was a member of sons of the American Legion Squadron 15 and Eagles Club, Inc, both of Waynesboro. He was a member of Pennsylvania State Education Association, National Education Association and served as President of Waynesboro Area Education Association. He served on the Board of Directors for Franklin County Teachers Credit Union for a number of years and on Waynesboro Area Human Services Council for 11 years. He also was a member of national AARP

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Warner of Waynesboro; three sons, William K. Kohler, James A. Kohler and Bradley A. Kohler, all of Waynesboro; six grandchildren; one step-grandson; one brother, Allison B. "Allie" Kohler of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joanna Kohler in 1935; a stepgrandson, Kevin Bumbaugh; and a son-in-law, John William "Bill" Fridinger.

Services were held the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 12 in Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, with the Revs. Mark Shover and John L. Rauch officiating.

Burial followed in Green Hill cemetery, Waynesboro.

Arrangements were handled by Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Rev. Amos Lloyd Kipe
Rev. Amos Lloyd Kipe, 83, of 125 Maple Ave., Greencastle, and formerly of 11937 Gehr Road, Waynesboro, died at 1 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008 in his home.

Born April 11, 1924 in the Washington Township area of Franklin County, he was the son of the late George H. and Katie M. (Varner) Kipe. He spent most of his life in the Waynesboro area.

Rev. Kipe received his G.E.D. and became an ordained minister of the Brethren in Christ Church Conference in April 1980.

He and his first wife, the late Verna Belle (Lohman) Kipe, were married Sept. 1, 1945 in Waynesboro. They moved to their Gehr Road address in 1962. She died Oct. 11, 1996. He and his second wife, Dorotha P. (Witmer) Parmer Kipe, were married May 23, 1998 in Greencastle. He moved to his current residence following their marriage.

Rev. Kipe was first employed for Wayne Tool Company, Waynesboro, in the early 1940's. He later worked as a chauffer for Montebello State Hospital in Baltimore, MD from 1958-1960. From 1960 until his retirement in 1989, he was employed as a tool inspector for Landis Machine Company, Waynesboro. During this time he also served as Pastor of Iron Springs Brethren in Christ Church, near Fairfield, PA in Hamiltonban Township from 1965-1980.

He was a member of Antrim Brethren in Christ Church, Greencastle.

Rev. Kipe was also a member of the Wittington Hunting Club, Waynesboro Fish and Game Association and was a life member of the National Rifle Association.

In addition to his second wife, Rev. Kipe is survived by one brother, George D. Kipe, a resident of Menno Haven Nursing Home, Chambersburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, David Kipe, John Kipe and Ralph "Candy" Kipe.

Services were held the morning of Monday, Feb. 4 in Antrim Brethren in Christ Church, Chambersburg, with the Pastor Dwayne Potteiger and Ky Searcy, officiating.

Burial followed in Green Hill cemetery, Waynesboro.

Arrangements were handled by the Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

Mary Jean Stair
Mary Jean (Skipper) Stair, 78, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, and formerly of 7903 Stonebridge Road, Greencastle, died at 3:21 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, in the nursing home. Born July 31, 1929 in Bedford, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Vivian L. (Kline) Ski...[cut off]

Joyce Ann (Dreyer) Wyckoff, 58 of 19748 Longmeadow Road, Hagerstown, Md. died at 6:40 A.M. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008 in the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, Md. Charlotte R. (Main) Beaver, 78, of Greencastle, died at 4:04 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, in the Waynesboro Hospital. She was born Oct. 10, 1929 in Frederick, Md. She and her husband of over 60 years, Roy C. Beaver Sr., a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, were married June 7, 19...[cut off]

Beulah L. Horst
Beulah L. Horst, 88, of 244 Village Square Menno Haven. Chambersburg, and formerly of Paramount, Md. died at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born Jan. 5, 1920 in Clear Spring, Md. she was the daughter of the late Abram S. and Gertrude (Gehr) Horst.

Arnold B. "Arnie" Shafer
Arnold B. "Arnie" Shafer, 69, of 154 Salem Road, Chambersburg, died unexpectedly at 9:36 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008 in the emergency room of the Chambersburg Hospital. Born March 12, 1938 in Cumberland, Md. he was the son of the late A. Burton and Louise H. (Martin) Shafer.

Donald E. "Don" Cordell
Donald E. "Don" Cordell, 81, a resident of the Health Care Center at Cross Keys Village - The Brethren Home Community in New Oxford, and formerly of 15 Regency Circle, Gettysburg, died at 5:10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 in the health care center.

Born Jan. 27, 1927 in Kauffman, he was the son of the late Harry C. and Anna (Goetz) Cordell.

He was sales manager of petroleum equipment for the Northeast Regional Area of the Fill-Rite Division of Tuthill Corporation of Ft. Wayne, Ind. He also was a former funeral director, having worked in Philadelphia and Gettysburg.

Mr. Cordell was a member of the Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church near Gettysburg, where he served as an elder and on the home ministry team.

He was a 1944 graduate of Greencastle High School and 1949 graduate of the former Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia.

Mr. Cordell also served on the Board of Trustees of the Eisenhower Historical Society and was a former member of the Fairfield and Gettysburg Lions Clubs.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He and his wife, Virginia M. "Ginny" (Martin) Cordell, were married Jan. 30, 1948. She died on July 1, 1998.

He is survived by three  daughters, Donna Ruth Genoese of York, Diane Lynne Cordell of Berlin, N.J. and Holly C. Martin of Gettysburg; a companion, Joan Bryce of Gettysburg; four grandchildren, Erminio E. Genoese, Antonino D. Genoese, David S. Martin and Elizabeth N. Martin.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Cordell and Vivian Hollinger.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1 in the Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church, 1865 Knoxlyn Road, Gettysburg, with Rev. Dale Williams officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery near Gettysburg.

There will be no public viewing.

The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to the cemetery restoration fund of the Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church, 1865 Knoxlyn Road, Gettysburg, Pa. 17325.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home of Greencastle.
