Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

George Lee Gordon
George Lee Gordon, 64, of 6201 Charlestown Road, Mercersburg, died at 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 in his home. His death followed a brief illness.

Born Feb. 5, 1944 in Cove Gap, he was the son of the late Frank E. and Gertrude (Hull) Gordon. He was a life long resident of the Mercersburg area.

Mr. Gordon attended James Buchanan High School, Mercersburg.

He served in the United States Army.

Mr. Gordon was employed as a subcontractor for the Public Opinion, Chambersburg, delivering newspapers for over 30 years. He also owned and trained thoroughbred racehorses.

He was a member of Harry Lackhove American Legion Post 517, Mercersburg and Charlestown HPBA.

He is survived by his long time companion, Shirley "Sis" Eutzy of Mercersburg; three  daughters, Marie Shriner of New Cumberland, and Meletia Shriner and Denise McFadden, both of Middletown, Pa.; three sons, Frank Gordon II of Fort Loudon, Jeff Bryan of Red Lion and Brian Eutzy of Mercersburg; a number of grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Frances Richard of N.C., Shirley Knight of Mercersburg, Betty Naugle of St. Thomas and Tina Witmer of Fort Loudon; three brothers, Harold Gordon, Howard Gordon and William "Buck" Gordon, all of Mercersburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth "Esther" Gordon; and three brothers, Leonard Gordon, Calvin Gordon and Paul Gordon.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 South Washington St., Greencastle, with the Revs. John Semple and Norman Hege officiating.

Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery, Mercersburg, with military graveside honors conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Franklin & Fulton County Unit, 384 Floral Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Kathleen "Kitty" M. Hartman
Kathleen "Kitty" M. Hartman, 88, a resident of the Penn Hall Nursing Center since July 2008 and formerly of Greencastle, died at 4:10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 in the nursing center.

Born Aug. 25, 1920 in Quincy, she was the daughter of the late Albert S. and Della (Myers) Snyder.

She retired in 1982 from the former Stanley Co. of Chambersburg.

She and her husband, William R. Hartman, were married on June 7, 1941. He died Sept. 30, 1994.

Mrs. Hartman was a member of The Brethren Fellowship Church of Chambersburg.

She was a graduate of the former Quincy High School.

Mrs. Hartman enjoyed traveling and being with her family.

She is survived by a son, William (husband of Rozenna) Hartman Jr. of Hanover; a daughter, Susan (wife of Roy Jr.) Daugherty of Chambersburg; three sisters, Margaret Alleman of Florida, Mildred Geesaman of Colorado and Lois George of Shady Grove; two brothers, Earl Snyder of Chambersburg and Robert Snyder of Shady Grove; three grandchildren, Michele Hostetter, Tricia Murray and Daniel Hartman; and four great-grandchildren

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Schnabel; one brother, Harold Snyder; and one great-granddaughter, Chanel Beard.

Services were held the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 30 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Manny Diaz officiating.

Burial followed in the Brown's Mill cemetery, Kauffman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the building fund of The Brethren Fellowship Church, 339 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Violet Marie Bushey Davison
Violet Marie Bushey Davison, 101, of Chambersburg, died late Thursday night, Feb. 23, at Magnolias of Chambersburg. She was the husband of the late Joseph Frederick Davison Jr., who preceded her in death March 28, 1977.
Born July 7, 1910, in York Springs, she was a daughter of the late George Nicholas and Emma Elizabeth Leer Bushey.
Mrs. Davison graduated Shippensburg Teachers College and taught just out of college in a two-room schoolhouse in Idaville. Later she helped on the family farm and enjoyed gardening and caring for the animals. Additionally, as the selfless person she was, she was the caregiver to many family members.
She was a member of Greencastle Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are three children, Sandra Sue Davison Lum of Chambersburg, Barbara Ann Davison Clever and husband Brad of Chambersburg and J. Frederick Davison III, DMA, and wife Dottie of Pasadena, Calif.; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; former son-in-law, Donn P. Lum of Chambersburg; and a niece and a nephew.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Davison was preceded in death by four siblings.
A memorial service was held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at her church, Greencastle Presbyterian Church, 57 W. Baltimore St. with her pastor, Rev. Taylor R. Camerer, officiating.
Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran Care and Hospice, Inc., 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Doris J. “Dorie” Barnhart
Doris J. “Dorie” Barnhart, age 82, of 61 Wilhelm St., Greencastle, died at 8:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 in her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born May 19, 1927 in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Seibert and Lucy (Deck) Myers.
She married Blaine K. Barnhart Sept. 28, 1946 in Hagerstown, Md.
Dorie worked at the former Wogan's Drug Store, now Rite Aid, in Greencastle.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greencastle, a former auxiliary member of the Rescue Hose Co. 1, Greencastle Sportsman Association and Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post 6319 of Greencastle.
Dorie served on the local election board, enjoyed playing cards, square dancing with the Whirley Birds Square Dance Club in her younger years and spending time with her family.
She attended Greencastle High School and was a member of the Greencastle-Antrim Loyal  daughters.
Surviving family, in addition to her husband, are one daughter, Cindy (husband Greg) Oberholzer, Greencastle; two sons, Douglas (wife Valerie) Barnhart, Greencastle and Timothy (wife Kim) Barnhart, Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Jane Beaver, Greencastle; and one brother, Donald E. Myers, Greencastle.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Isabel Cunningham and Anna Snoke; and three brothers, George Myers, Robert Myers and Ray Myers.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18 from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, with Pastor Stacy Crawford officiating.
Burial will be in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in her memory to the Lutheran Home Care and Hospice, 2700 Luther Dr., Chambersburg, PA 17202 or to the First United Methodist Church, 45 N. Washington St., Greencastle, PA 17225.

Leslie M. Sellers
Leslie Monroe Sellers, age 92, of 1093 Milnor Road, Greencastle, was promoted to his heavenly home early Monday morning, Jan. 2, 2012, after a brief illness at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, W. Va.\
Born May 9, 1919, at Kauffman Station, near Greencastle, he was the son of the late Monroe George and Anna Catherine (Whitmore) Sellers.
He was always interested in aviation and took flight lessons from Dick Henson at Municipal Airport at age 15. After graduating from Greencastle-Antrim High School in 1937, he spent a year in the Army Air Corps at Langley Field (1937-1938). Afterward, he entered Aero Industrial Technical Institute in Glendale, Calif., graduating in 1939 as an Aircraft Master Mechanic. He worked at Vultee Aircraft in Downey, Calif., until 1941. He applied for Air Force Cadet Training. Meanwhile, he returned to Hagerstown, Md. and worked at Fairchild Aircraft Corporation. He entered the United States Army Air Force in 1943 and received his wings and 2nd Lieutenant commission in 1944. Leslie was co-pilot of a B-24 Liberator Bomber in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. His plane was hit Sept. 11, 1944, during a mission to Magdeburg, Germany, and that eventually led to his “Missing in Action” status. He was liberated on April 9, 1945, and returned from overseas on V-E day, May 8, 1945. He arrived home on his birthday, May 9. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.
After becoming a civilian, he worked at Fairchild Industries for several years. He also worked as an electrician and car salesman in the local area. He retired from Grove Manufacturing Company, Shady Grove, in 1981.
He was a former member of the Hollowell Brethren in Christ Church for 18 years, then a member of Cutting Edge Ministries where he was a member of the Adult Bible Class and an elder. He was a charter member of the Hagerstown Chapter of the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship, serving in several offices.
He served as a volunteer at Mount Hope Prison Ministry, Hagerstown, for 23 years and a volunteer at Western Maryland Hospital for several years. He served as an advisor for the Hagerstown Chapter of Women's Aglow Fellowship for 10 years. He was also a member of Morris Frock, Post 42, American Legion and a member of the local AARP.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Billie Jeanne Sellers; one daughter, Cynthia Jeanne Miller, and her husband, William Jonathan Miller, both of Greencastle; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Miller, of Herndon, Va.; and one nephew, William Neal of Williamantic, Conn.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Miriam Catherine Neal; and one grandson, Jonathan (“Jon”) Andrew Miller.
The family requests the omission of flowers.

There will be no viewing; however, a visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 at the Harold M. Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle.
There will be a private burial service in Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6 at Hollowell Brethren in Christ Church, 14807 Hollowell Church Road, Waynesboro, officiated by Pastor Brett D. McKoy of Cutting Edge Ministries, Hagerstown.

Ross E. Bricker
Ross E. Bricker, 75, of Greencastle, died at 11:57 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born July 26, 1936, in Clear Spring, Md., he was a son of the late Ray F. and Susan Mills Bricker.
Mr. Bricker was a machinist, and was last employed at PME Machine Co. of Greencastle. He retired in 2000.
He attended Macedonia United Brethren Church.
Ross enjoyed woodworking.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara V. “Dolly” Mayhugh Bricker, whom he married June 1, 1960; three sons, Ross E. Bricker Jr. of Mechanicsburg, Kermit R. Elliott of Greencastle and Kevin L. Bricker of Utah; a daughter, Kris A. Nichols of Chambersburg; three grandsons, two step grandsons, one step granddaughter, three great granddaughters, one great grandson; and a sister, Dorothy Bard of Chambersburg.
Ross was preceded in death by siblings, Richard “Dick” Bricker and Gladys Musselman.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 5 at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg, with Reverend Gayle L. Ruble Sr. officiating.
Burial will be at Brown’s Mill cemetery, Kauffman.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.

Margaret “Peggy” Catherine Appleby Kemmler
Margaret “Peggy” Catherine Appleby Kemmler, 83, of Burnt Cabins, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, in Penn Hall Nursing Center, Chambersburg.
Born July 19, 1928, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of Fred B. Appleby and Ethel Workman Appleby. She grew up in Mount Union, surrounded by her extended family. She spoke fondly of these years, working behind the soda fountain of the family pharmacy and assisting in the war effort by selling war bonds at school and knitting socks for the Red Cross to send to our soldiers. She developed a great interest in the history of Mount Union and worked very actively in the Mount Union Area Historical Society, serving as secretary until shortly before her death. She also continued the tradition of charitable knitting, by knitting sweaters for refugee children sponsored by the Methodist church in Greencastle.
Peggy graduated from Susquehanna University in 1949 with a Bachelors degree in English and History. She married Charles William “Bill” Kemmler in August 1949. In 1955, after completing his college education and two tours in the U.S. Navy, Bill and Peggy settled in Greencastle and were hired as teachers for the Greencastle-Antrim School District. Peggy taught senior and freshman English until 1983. She always said that she was blessed to have taught in an ideal teaching environment. The closeness and camaraderie shared by the faculty under Principal Jim Martz was unique. She developed close friendships that continue today and are celebrated with monthly N.O.W. dinner meetings. Greencastle and its people held a special place in her heart.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Union and continued to sing in the choir until this fall. She had a life-long love of music and felt honored to have had the opportunity to sing with the Mercersburg Community Chorus for several seasons. Peggy was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed biographies and history of the World War II era. She had a great love of the work of William Shakespeare and was a member of the Shakespeare Society of Mount Union, which met monthly to read and discuss his works. Gardening at her beloved Decorum and genealogy research were other favorite pastimes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Fred B. Appleby Jr.
Peggy is survived by son, William Bruce Kemmler and his wife, Bonnie, of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter Ann Kemmler Mathews and her husband, Trent Mathews, of Chambersburg; five grandchildren, Alexis Kemmler Simpson, wife of Tom, Charles Kemmler; Benjamin Clousher, husband of Angela; Nathaniel Mathews and Zachary Mathews; and three great grandchildren, Blake and Will Simpson, and Madison Blair Clousher. Peggy is also survived by cousin, Josephine Appleby Shaw of Massachusetts; sister-in-law, Betty Appleby of Mount Union; and several nieces and nephews.
Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 at Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle.
A memorial service and visitation with the family will be conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21 by Heath Funeral Home at Mount Union Presbyterian Church, Shirley and Division Streets, Mount Union.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Union Area Historical Society, Attention: Beverly Tilson, P. O. Box 118, Mount Union, PA 17066.

Hilda L. Cordell
Hilda L. (Kiser) Cordell, 76, of 8861 Molly Pitcher Highway, Greencastle, died unexpectedly at 12:26 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2006 in the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Sept. 24, 1929 in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Thelma (Grove) Kiser.

Mrs. Cordell was a 1947 graduate of Greencastle High School.

She was a homemaker and in her earlier years she was employed at the former Stanley Company of Chambersburg.

Mrs. Cordell was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Greencastle, where she was a member of the Nurture and Outreach Committee and member and former president of the Fellowship Sunday School Class.

She was a volunteer at the Quincy United Methodist Home.

Mrs. Cordell enjoyed gardening and caning.

She and her husband, Donald R. Cordell, were married Sept. 3, 1949 in the former Evangelical United Brethren Church, Greencastle.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Sandra E. Domer of Chambersburg; two sons, Larry D. Cordell and Brian R. Cordell, both of Greencastle; a sister, Jean Wingert of Victorville, Calif.; two brothers, Donald Kiser of Greencastle and Lowell Kiser of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held the morning of Monday, March 20 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Stacy Crawford officiating.

Burial was in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Building Fund of the First United Methodist Church, 45 N. Washington St., Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Mary K. (Shaffer) Henninger
Plane Mary K. (Shaffer) Henninger, 87, a resident of The Village Of Laurel Run, Fayetteville, and formerly of State Line, Pa. died at 2:10 a.m. Thursday, April 27, 2006 in the nursing home.

Grace H. Leis
Grace H. Leis, 56, of 14549 National Pike, Clear Spring, Md. died early Tuesday morning, April 25, 2006 in her home.

Mary C. (Miller) Wilson
Mary C. (Miller) Wilson, 98, of 11138 Worleytown Road, Greencastle, died at 4:17 p.m., Friday, April 28, 2006 at her home. She had been in failing health for several months.

Erika Stouffer
Erika Stouffer, 65, of 5135 Buchanan Trail West, Greencastle, died early Wednesday morning, April 26, 2006 in her home.

Ruth B. Klimas
Ruth (Bright) Klimas, 85, of 12241 Carol Ave. Greencastle, died at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 2006 in her home.

Drew Michael Taylor
Drew Michael Taylor, three and one-half year-old son of Randy and Marcie Taylor, 402 Richwalter Ave., Shippensburg, and brother to Lauren Elizabeth Taylor, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006 in the Children's Hospital of King's  daughters, Norfolk, Va.

Janette C. Saylor
Janette C. (Stevens) Saylor, 85, a resident of the Shook Home, Chambersburg, for the past three years and formerly of Linden Avenue, Greencastle, and a 25-year resident of 3767 Mercersburg Road, Mercersburg, died at 9:40 p.m. Saturday June 24, 2006 in the nursing home.

Jean Diffenderfer Walker
Jean Diffenderfer Walker, 87, of Longmont, Col., died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007 at her home. Born Feb. 29, 1920 in Camden, N.J., she was the daughter of Franklin and Elizabeth A. (Guy) Diffenderfer. Mrs. Walker graduated from Wilson College with a bachelor's degree in teaching in 1941.

Goldie Mae Christophel Gearhart
Goldie Mae Christophel Gearhart, 84, of 937 Concord Street, Hagerstown, Md., died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 in Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown. She had been in failing health since October 2007. Born Feb. 12, 1923 in Antrim Township, she was the daughter of the late Nelly May Mickley. She lived at her Hagerstown home for the last 15 years.

Mary E. Gayman
Mary E. Gayman, 83, of Greencastle, died at 4:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 in the Waynesboro Hospital. Born Jan. 19, 1924 in Antrim Township, she was the daughter of the late Henry S. and Hattie Crunkilton) Gayman. She worked for the former J.J. Alleman Electric Co. of Greencastle and retired from the former Corning Glass Works also of Greencastle.

Larry G. Shaffer
Larry G. Shaffer, 56, of 164 N. Allison St., Greencastle, died at 9:42 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008 in Julia Manor Health Care Center of Hagerstown, Md. He had been in declining health for the past few years. Born Oct. 24, 1951 in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late G. William and Arabelle M. (Benchoff) Shaffer.

Doris J. Dreyer
Doris Jean Dreyer, 80, of 450 Colonial Dr., Greencastle, died unexpectedly early Tuesday morning, April 22, 2008 in her home. Born Oct. 1, 1927 in Bedford Valley, she was the daughter of the late Henry Lloyd and Gladys Elizabeth (Cross) Zembower.

Ruby J. (Lamoreaux) Smith, 74, a guest of Menno Haven Nursing Home, Chambersburg, formerly of Elder Ave., Waynesboro, died at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2008 in the nursing home. Born Feb. 5, 1934 in Phillipsburg, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Francis Lamoreaux and Victoria (Hite) Pin...

Herbert L. Zeger
Herbert L. Zeger, 87, of 7748 Brown's Mill Road, Chambersburg, died at 10:40 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2008 in the Shook Home of Chambersburg. Born July 8, 1921 in Fort Loudon, he was the son of the late David S. and Ruth (Neikirk) Zeger.

Raymond B. Laubs
Raymond B. " Father Raymond" Laubs, 82, of 1072 Milnor Road, Greencastle, died at 11:55 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, in the emergency room of the Waynesboro Hospital. His death was unexpected and attributed to natural causes.
