Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

George W. Detzel

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - George W. Detzel, 73, of 23 Sanibel Lane, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at his home.

Born Oct. 6, 1924, in Sterling, Colo., he was the son of the late William and Catherine Schrow Detzel.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Detzel, in 1967.

He was employed by Erie Ordinance Depot in Ohio for 24 years. Upon its closing, he transferred to Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg for eight years and retired in 1974.

He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

He was a member of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW; Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion; Landis-McCleaf Detachment Marine Corps League; AMVETS Post 224; and was a charter member of the Catholic War Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy G. Hayden Detzel; four sisters, Katherine Ulrich of Chicago, Deloris Winters of Dixon, Ill., Mary Criscione of Niles, Ill., and Geraldine Grau of Walbridge, Ohio; four brothers, Jack Detzel of Twin Lakes, Wis., John Detzel of Miami, Larry Detzel of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Marlyn Detzel of Gibsonburg, Ohio; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Ambrose H. Eckinger will be celebrant. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., where a rosary will be said at 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Gerald J. Peffert

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Gerald J. Peffert, 91, of Chambersburg, and formerly of Naples, Fla., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at the Shook Home.

Born Aug. 30, 1906, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Gerald A. and Margaret Irene Smith Peffert.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret E. Hoffman, in 1996.

He attended New York University, the American Institute of Banking at Dartmouth College and Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.

He was employed by New York State Banking Department, Manufacturers Hanover Trust and Irving Trust companies. He frequently represented his industry before city, state and federal regulatory bodies. He retired in 1966 as executive vice president of the Dime Savings Bank of New York.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Naval Reserves and served in the 1930s. He also was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served from 1940 to 1946.

He was a member of Moorings Presbyterian Church, Naples.

He is survived by niece Linda D. Hoffman of Amityville, N.Y.; and nephews, the Rev. Stephen Hoffman of Chambersburg and John B. Hoffman of Brunswick, Maine.

Burial will be in George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, N.J., following a memorial service.

Memorial donations may be made to the Shook Home, 55 S. Second St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Virginia L. Fortney

NEEDMORE, Pa. - Virginia L. Fortney, 72, a resident of Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia, Pa., and formerly of Needmore, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at Woodland.

Born Oct. 28, 1925, in Mount Union, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Edith Gussler Snow.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Fortney, in 1988.

She retired from Sagner Inc., McConnellsburg, Pa.; and earlier had worked at L. Grief and Co., Mount Union.

She was a member of Walnut Grove Church of God, RD, Three Springs, Pa.

She is survived by one daughter, Deborah DeShong of Needmore; two sons, John Yetter of Fort Littleton, Pa., and James Fortney of McConnellsburg, Pa.; two sisters, Dorothy Stuck of Lewistown, Pa. and Matilda Cypher of Mount Union; one brother, Edward Snow of Unadilla, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Snow; and one sister, Ida Snow.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown, Pa. The Rev. Kenneth Cornelius will officiate. Burial will be in Clear Ridge Cemetery, RD, Hustontown.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation also will be Saturday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Eugene P. Cresswell

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Eugene Paul "Gene" Cresswell, 56, of 12 W. Third St., Apt. 2E, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.

He was born Dec. 9, 1940, in Huntingdon, Pa.

He was employed by Waynesboro Record Herald in newspaper delivery.

He had been a member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in Waynesboro for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife, Martha V. Holmes Cresswell, whom he married Feb. 28, 1996; five sons, Steven Cresswell and Jason Cresswell, both of Huntingdon, Preston Shaw and William Shaw Jr., both of Waynesboro, and Lester Fritts of Hagerstown; two sisters, two brothers; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gene Cresswell.

Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Samples Manor Cemetery, Harpers Ferry Road, Sharpsburg. Pastor Jaye Bartle will officiate.

Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Donations to assist the family may be sent to Virginia V. Cresswell, 12 W. Third St., Apt. 2E, Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Christopher L. Clouser

RENFREW, Pa. - Christopher L. "Chris" Clouser, 19, of 359 Rader School Road, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Butler Memorial Hospital, Butler, Pa.

Born Sept. 6, 1978, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of Carl L. Clouser of Renfrew and the late Donna L. Cook Clouser, who died Nov. 8, 1997.

He was a 1997 graduate of Seneca Valley High School.

He was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to his  Father, he is survived by one sister, Traci J. Clouser of Renfrew; maternal grandparents, Stanley and Wilma Curtis of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; paternal grandparents, Richard and Pauline Clouser of East Waterford, Pa.; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Mark A. Hagy will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles S. Daley

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Charles S. Daley, 75, of 240 Orchard Circle, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Born Jan. 15, 1922, in Greencastle, he was the son of the late Charles R. and Edna B. Dentler Daley.

He worked as a route salesman for Capitol Bakers in Chambersburg, Pa., from 1943 to 1955. From 1956-1963 he operated Daley's Sunoco Service Station in Greencastle and owned and operated Hagerstown Kitchen Cabinets in the early 1960s. Earlier he worked for Greencastle Cannery and Omwake and Oliver Elevator in Greencastle.

He was a police officer in Greencastle, and was chief of police from 1973 until his retirement in 1979.

He was a member of Greencastle Church of the Brethren.

He was a member of Rescue Hose Co. No.1, Greencastle, Harry D. Zeigler Veterans of Foreign War of Greencastle, and Fraternal Order of Police Tri-County Lodge No. 76.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel E. Pittman Daley, whom he married June 6, 1942; four  daughters, Patricia A. Clower of Bunker Hill, W.Va., Barbara Stoner of Clarksville, Tenn., Ginger E. McDonough of Greencastle, and Susan M. Black of Melbourne, Fla.; three sisters, Mildred Plum and Viola Plum, both of Greencastle, and Lorraine Helfrick of Waynesboro, Pa.; two brothers, Ellis F. Daley of Greencastle and Russell E. Daley of Waynesboro; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Kenneth Daley; an infant daughter, Nancy Lou Daley; one brother, Alvin Daley; and two sisters, Janet Barnhart and Hazel Bowser.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Charles A. Schroer will officiate. Burial will be in Shank's Church of the Brethren Cemetery, near Greencastle.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Paul E. Horn

QUINCY, Pa. - The Rev. Paul Edward Horn, 85, a resident of Quincy Village, and formerly of Harrisburg, Pa., died of a stroke Sunday, Nov. 23, 1997, at Quincy United Methodist Home.

Born March 17, 1912, in York, Pa., he was the son of the late Marcellus and Susan Prowell Horn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy A. Yeakel Horn, in 1986.

He was a graduate of William Penn Senior High School, York, and of York Collegiate Institute in 1936. He was a 1940 graduate of Lebanon Valley College, Annville, Pa., with a bachelor of arts degree and a 1943 graduate of United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, with a master of divinity degree.

He received honorary doctor of divinity degrees from Albright College in Reading, Pa., in 1959, and from Lebanon Valley College in 1966.

He served as minister at the Scotland, Pa., charge of the United Brethren Church from 1943 through 1948. He served at Shippensburg Messiah Evangelical United Brethren Church from 1948 through 1953 and at Memorial Evangelical United Brethren Church in Washington, D.C. (now Silver Spring, Md.), from 1953 through 1961. Prior to retiring in 1980, he served at Stevens Memorial United Methodist Church in Harrisburg from 1973 through 1980.

He held various offices in the church conference, including superintendent of the Pennsylvania Conference from 1961 to 1965; superintendent of the Susquehanna Conference from 1965 to 1969; and council director of the Central Pennsylvania Conference from 1970 to 1973. His charge conference membership was at First United Methodist Church, Chambersburg, Pa.

He was manager and member of the board of directors of Camp Penn, Old Forge, Pa., from 1947 to 1953; trustee of Lebanon Valley College from 1952 to 1979; trustee emeritus, trustee of United Theological Seminary from 1962 to 1989 and life trustee from 1989 until recently; and trustee of Quincy United Methodist Home from 1961 to 1988, where he was president from 1968 to 1988.

He was a member of Centennial Lodge 14 F.&A.M., Washington, D.C.

He is survived by three  daughters, M. Patricia Nelson of Allentown, Pa., Christine L. Wintrode of Fairfax, Va., and Paula A. Nichols of Espanola, N.M.; nine grandchildren; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by one brother, George Horn.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 29, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 225 S. Second St., Chambersburg. The Rev. Donald Nolder and Bishop Joseph H. Yeakel will officiate.

The family will receive friends after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Benevolent Fund of Quincy United Methodist Home, P.O. Box 128, Quincy, Pa. 17247; or the Horn Scholarship Fund, c/o Lebanon Valley College, Annville, Pa. 17003.

Arrangements are by Cumberland Valley Crematory, Waynesboro, Pa.
