George B. Benedict

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - George B. Benedict, 74, of 6200 Mount Zion Road, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at Bee Bee Medical Center, Lewis, Del.

Born June 7, 1923, in Quincy Township, Pa., he was the son of the late John A. and Agnes R. Martin Benedict.

He was a 1943 graduate of Quincy High School.

He owned and operated the family farm near Quincy until 1983.

He and his family also owned and operated the Twin Kiss in Quincy from 1955 to 1972, the Quincy Car Wash from 1965 to 1985 and the American Recycling Business from 1981 to 1988.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Association, National AARP and Waynesboro Fish and Game Association.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet R. Gsell Benedict; one daughter, Julie A. Baker of Waynesboro; one granddaughter, Lori L. Cauffman of Hagerstown; one grandson, David M. Cauffman Jr. of Waynesboro; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Richard A. Seaks will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, near Quincy.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

John R. Hostetter

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - John R. Hostetter, 74, of 4981 Green Village Road, died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 25, 1924, in Greene Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Jacob R. and Emma B. Thrush Hostetter.

He was a member of Brethren in Christ Church and attended Mount Rock Brethren in Christ Church, Shippensburg, Pa.

He was a farmer. He originated the idea to form Chambersburg Farm Service, obtained financial banking from local farmers, established the business, served as its first secretary and treasurer, and was general manager for seven years. During his retirement, he was employed by Menno Haven, Chambersburg.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Kipe Hostetter, whom he married in 1946; one daughter, Joyce D. Cooper of Chambersburg; one son, Warren R. Grandstaff of Hagerstown; one sister, Emma Jane Hostetter of Chambersburg; three brothers, Samuel L. Hostetter and Paul J. Hostetter, both of Chambersburg, and Abraham N. Hostetter of Orlando, Fla.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. H. Frank Kipe, retired bishop of the Brethren in Christ Church, Pastor Lloyd Zimmerman of Mount Rock Brethren in Christ Church, and Chaplain Sam Troyer of Menno Haven will officiate. Burial will be in Air Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m., and Saturday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Robert M. Kendall

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Robert M. Kendall, 87, a resident of the extended care facility of Fulton County Medical Center, and formerly of McConnellsburg, died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center.

Born April 24, 1911, in Ayr Township, Fulton County, Pa., he was the son of the late Morrow McNaughton and Cleonia Pollock Kendall.

His wife, Hilda Carbaugh Kendall, died in 1996.

He worked all of his life at the family farm.

He was a member of McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of Dairy Herd Improvement Association, a lifetime member and officer of the Pennsylvania Farmers Association, a former school board member of the Central Fulton School Board, where he was a one-time vice president and president of the board. He sold one of his farms to a group of people in the community to be used as Great Cove Golf Course.

He is survived by five  daughters, Anna Harvey of Needmore, Pa., Nancy Richards of McConnellsburg, Betty Mills of Mercersburg, Pa., Linda Zawacky of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Joyce Long of Harrisonville, Pa.; six sons, Robert Kendall, Carl Kendall, Thomas Kendall and John Kendall, all of McConnellsburg, William Kendall of Everett, Pa., and Steve Kendall of Harrisonville, Pa.; 31 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Morrow "Shorty" Kendall and Harry "Bait" Kendall; two sisters; four brothers; and four grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Trent Hancock and the Rev. Belvy White will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the church today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Extended Care Facility of Fulton County Medical Center, South First Street, McConnellsburg, Pa. 17233; or to Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 11534, Harrisburg, Pa. 17108.

Arrangements are by Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, McConnellsburg.

Ellis D. Weigle

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Ellis Donald Weigle, 83, of 201 N. Potomac St., died Friday, May 22, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Aug. 29, 1914, in New Rochelle, N.Y., he was the son of the late Capt. Ellis Donald and Caroline Dietrichson Weigle.

He was a 1932 graduate of Scotland School for Veterans Children.

He was employed by Landis Tool Co. as an inspector for 38 years, retiring in 1972.

He served with the National Guard in the 104th Cavalry Division for three years.

He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Lewis Weigle of Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, Pa., whom he married Jan. 9, 1938; one daughter, Carolyn Mummert of Winchester, Va.; one brother, Ronald L. Weigle of West Haven Canyon Lake, Texas; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Allan Mummert will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Park Cemetery, Chambersburg, Pa.

Arrangements are by Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

John R. Hostetter

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - John R. Hostetter, 74, of 4981 Green Village Road, who died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, received financial backing from local farmers to establish Chambersburg Farm Service.

He is survived by a son, Warren R. Hostetter of Hagerstown.

Mary C. Eck

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Mary Catherine Eck, 70, formerly of 24 W. Main St., died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at Piney Mountain Home, Fayetteville, Pa.

Born Dec. 8, 1927, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Howard Elmer Sr. and Mae Catherine Cline Smith.

She was a 1946 graduate of Smithsburg High School.

She was a machine operator for Connie Sportswear for 13 years, retiring in 1978.

She was a member of Blue Mountain Church of God, Rouzerville.

She is survived by two  daughters, Shirley Ann Moats and Tina Lynn McFerren, both of Waynesboro; two sons, Daniel Eck of Waynesboro, and James Anthony Eck Sr. of Mont Alto, Pa.; three brothers, Howard Elmer Smith Jr. of Gettysburg, Pa., Harold R. Smith and Charles R. Smith, both of Waynesboro; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one granddaughter.

Services will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, corner of South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro. The Rev. Arnold E. Wagman will officiate. Burial will be in Park Lawns Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

John H. Cotton Sr.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - John Harold Cotton Sr., 66, of 7018 Kuhn Road, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Sept. 24, 1931, in Salisbury, N.C., he was the son of the late James Curtis and Nellie Mildred Lanning Cotton.

He spent his early life in Norfolk, Va., and Fayetteville, N.C.

He was employed as a computer technician at Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, Pa., retiring in 1987 after 34 years of service.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from October 1948 to January 1952.

He was a Protestant.

He was a member of Mercersburg Sportsman's Association.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Blanche Tosten Cotton, whom he married Dec. 6, 1950; a daughter, Karen Ann Hammond of Winchester, Va.; three sons, John Harold Cotton Jr. of Charlottesville, Va., Ronald Curtis Cotton of Chambersburg and Larry Stephen Cotton of Greencastle; two sisters, Peggy Jo Milliner of Pocahontas, Va., and Joan Maxine Parker of Irwin, N.C.; two brothers, James Curtis Cotton of Bossier City, La., and Ronald Craig Cotton of Miami; 11 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle. The Revs. Curtis E. Bryant and Currie Parker will officiate. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles M. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 in Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, Pa., from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Ellis D. Weigle

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Ellis Donald Weigle, 83, of 201 N. Potomac St., died Friday, May 22, 1998. His family requests that memorial donations be made to Otterbein United Brethren in Christ Church, 901 Park St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Carl T. Myers Jr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Carl T. "Ted" Myers Jr., 65, of Waynesboro, died Saturday, May 23, 1998.

He was the husband of Beulah A. Burns Myers.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Catherine M. Taylor

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Catherine M. Taylor, 85, formerly of 112 S. Main St. in Mercersburg, Pa., died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg.

Born Oct. 3, 1912, in Mercersburg, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Clara Carl Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles N. Taylor, in 1967.

She worked for a number of years as a clerk at the former Myers & Tritle Department Store, Mercersburg.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Mercersburg.

She is survived by one son, Larry C. Taylor of Mercersburg; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers.

A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave. in Mercersburg. The Rev. Michael K. Miller will officiate. Private burial in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg, will be at the convenience of the family.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the Presbyterian Church, 34 W. Seminary St., Mercersburg, Pa. 17236.
