Hazel C. Reed

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Hazel C. Reed, 74, a resident of ManorCare and formerly of 2328 Community Center Road, died Saturday, July 4, 1998, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Nov. 23, 1923, in Ovett, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Lee and Ethel Cooley Cannon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover W. Reed, in 1985.

She was a 1944 graduate of Whitfield High School, Ovett.

She was a fruit packer with Mountain Brook Orchard in Edenville, Pa., for eight years. She also worked three years as a teacher's aide at St. Thomas Assembly of God Nursery School.

She was a member of Christian Life Assembly of God Church, Chambersburg.

She was a member of Norland Chapter of AARP.

She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Pittman of St. Thomas; one son, Daniel W. Reed of Chambersburg; two sisters, Nell Parkerson of Memphis, Tenn., and Bobbi Sandford of Seminary, Miss.; one brother, Theodore Cannon of Hattiesburg, Miss.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and companion, Harold Blattenberger of Mercersburg, Pa.

She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Christian Life Assembly of God Church, 1400 Warm Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Howard L. Beaver will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, St. Thomas.

Visitation will be at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Christian Life Assembly of God Church, 1400 Warm Spring Road, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

George D. Straley

MONTROSE, N.Y. - George D. Straley, 78, of Hudson Valley Health Care Center, and formerly of Chambersburg, Pa., died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at The Bronx Veterans Administration Center, Bronx, N.Y.

Born Feb. 12. 1920, in Mercersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late John E. and Mary E. Allison Straley.

As a young man, he worked as a truck driver for North-South Trucking Co. He was a licensed practical nurse and worked in various hospitals in New York City and did private duty nursing. He was last employed as a bus driver by New York Transit Authority.

He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Army. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a member of Burt Asper American Legion Post 46, Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg AMVETS 224 and Chambersburg Moose Lodge 842, all of Chambersburg.

He is survived by one daughter, Pamela Reeder of Port Royal, Pa.; one sister, Izzetta Cramer of Chambersburg; one brother, Walton L. Straley of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

Private services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to Charles Nitterhouse VFW Ladies Auxiliary Cancer Fund, 747 S. Fourth St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg.

Dora A.R. Ray

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Dora A. Rouzer Ray, 34, of 11969 Gehr Road, died Friday, July 3, 1998, at the home of her sister, Kathy Baker, in South Mountain, Pa.

Born Aug. 3, 1963, in Rochester, N.Y., she was the daughter of Sheldon S. and Doreen M. Feathers Rouzer of Bedford, Pa. She lived her early life in New York and later moved to Fort Loudon, Pa.

She was a 1981 graduate of Chestnut Ridge High School, New Paris, Pa.

She was employed by Regency Thermographers, Waynesboro, in data processing for seven years.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Michael V. Ray, whom she married on June 5, 1987; one daughter, Erin N. Ray, at home; one son, Kevin M. Ray, at home; two sisters, Kathy M. Baker of South Mountain and Dawn L. Moats of Waynesboro; one brother, S. Tom Rouzer of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Paul G. Talhelm

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Paul G. Talhelm, 73, of 8656 Brownsmill Road, died Monday, July 6, 1998, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Dec. 26, 1924, in Clay Hill, Pa., he was the son of the late Roy J. and Leah Gail Ryder Talhelm.

He was a 1942 graduate of Greencastle High School.

He was employed as a carpenter by Lanehart Construction of Greencastle, and then at Eagle Construction of Greencastle, retiring in 1988 with more than 35 years in construction.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II.

He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greencastle.

He was a life member of Harry D. Ziegler VFW Post 6319 and Frank Carbaugh American Legion Post 695, both of Greencastle.

He is survived by his wife, W. Lucille Bonebrake Talhelm, whom he married Oct. 14, 1950; a son, Michael W. Talhelm of Chambersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Helen L. Statler of Chambersburg and E. Marie Myers of Greencastle; two brothers, Chester R. Talhelm of Chambersburg and Wayne T. Talhelm of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a grandson; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 130 N. Washington St., Greencastle. The Rev. Perry S. Hanson will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. Military memorial services will be conducted by Harry D. Ziegler VFW Post 6319 at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Evangelical Lutheran Church, 130 N. Washington St., Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Shirley A. Taylor

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Shirley Ann Taylor, 61, of 1032 Orchard Drive, died Monday, July 6, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born May 16, 1937, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of Elsie V. Mort Ott Lamberson of McConnellsburg, Pa., and the late Frank G. Ott.

She was employed by Citizens Bank as a teller.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Chambersburg.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son, Kevin Taylor of Silver Spring, Md.; and a granddaughter, Madi.

She was preceded in death by an infant sister.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. Second St., McConnellsburg. The Rev. Karen Minnich-Sadler will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 2 to 9 p.m.

Roy L. Deardorff

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Roy L. Deardorff, 67, of 419 W. Catherine St., died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at his home.

Born Jan. 24, 1931, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Chamblers and Carrie M. Wolf Deardorff.

He was employed by Frick Co., Waynesboro, Pa. He was retired.

He is survived by a daughter, Marlene Bachtell of Chambersburg; three sons, Bernard E. Deardorff and Dale L. Deardorff, both of Chambersburg, and Leon C. Deardorff of Williamson, Pa.; a stepson, Daryl Wagner of Chambersburg; two sisters, Esther Nixon of Fayetteville, Pa., and Hazel Rowe of Waynesboro, Pa.; three brothers, Preston Deardorff and Robert Deardorff, both of Greencastle, Pa., and Russell Deardorff of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son and a brother.

Services will be Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be at the funeral home one hour prior to services Wednesday.

Bertha L. Zeigler

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Bertha L. Reed Zeigler, 79, of 262 Hawbaker Ave., died Monday, July 6, 1998, at Manorcare Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born April 17, 1919, in Mont Alto, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ida Kate Scott Reed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas A. Zeigler, in 1988. They were married in January 1935.

She was a member of Ringgold Church of Christ, Ringgold.

She is survived by four  daughters, Cathy Wishard of New Port Richey, Fla., Marilyn Bachtell of Hagerstown, Mary Creager and Shirley Shaffer, both of Waynesboro; one sister, Mary Barlup of Waynesboro; one brother, Harry Reed of Waynesboro; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Zeigler and Harry Zeigler; and one brother, Robert Reed.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Wilbur F. Besecker will officiate. Burial will be in Price's Church Cemetery near Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the family, in care of F&M Bank, 200 E. Main St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Harry H. Brechbill

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Harry H. Brechbill, 90, of 2500 Edenville Road, died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, at his home.

Born June 6, 1908, in Edenville, Pa., he was the son of the late Christian R. and Emma E. Hawbaker Brechbill.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Sleighter Brechbill, in 1970.

He was a farmer and furniture upholsterer.

He was a member of Old Order River Brethren Church, Chambersburg.

He is survived by his wife, Martha E. Wenger Brechbill; three  daughters, Martha Myers of St. Thomas, Pa., Evelyn Reese and Helen Meyers, both of Chambersburg; two sons, Kenneth E. Brechbill of St. Thomas and Harold Brechbill of Chambersburg; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, three brothers and one grandchild.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Salem United Brethren Church, 4349 Letterkenny Road, Chambersburg. Bishop Raymond Bricker, the Rev. Carl Meyers and Bishop Howard Meyers will officiate. Burial will be in Brechbill Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 6492 Lincoln Way West, St. Thomas, which will open at 2 p.m.

Janet L. Gilbert

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Janet L. Bumbaugh Gilbert, 62, of 2841 Railroad St., died Monday, July 6, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born March 18, 1936, in Pond Bank, Guilford Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry Edward and Emma Rhone Bumbaugh.

She attended schools in Pond Bank.

She attended the Fayetteville (Pa.) Church of God, Pond Bank Independent Church and Bible study at Pond Bank Mennonite Church.

She was a member of Pond Bank Improvement Association and National AARP.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Alfred E. Gilbert Sr.; two  daughters, Jean Johnston of Fayetteville and Trudy J. Harnish of Chambersburg; four sons, Terry E. Gilbert of Greencastle, Pa., Stanley A. Gilbert of Fayetteville, Alfred E. Gilbert Jr. and Duane A. Gilbert, both of Chambersburg; one sister, Betty L. Hardsock of Pond Bank; one brother, Rodney C. Bumbaugh of Pond Bank; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Martha E. Stoops Black, Hazel I. Rock, Jean E. Stevens and an infant sister; and two brothers, Robert L. Bumbaugh and an infant brother.

Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. George S. Mouer Sr., the Rev. Mervil R. Stambaugh and the Rev. Floyd E. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery near Quincy, Pa.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
