Charles E. Carson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Rev. Charles Edgar Carson, 81, of 115 Beechwood Lane, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at his home.

Born Nov. 29, 1916, in Uniontown, Pa., he was the son of the late Sidney Andrews Carson Sr. and Mae Elizabeth Cochran Carson.

His first wife, Maxine Burley Carson, died in 1987.

He graduated from Greensburg, Pa., public schools, Hartford, Conn., Seminary Foundation in 1945, and Princeton, N.J., Theological Seminary.

After a pastoral ministry from 1948 to 1951 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg, Pa., he entered Presbyterian Administrative Services. He was executive of the Presbytery of Washington, D.C., was on the Presbyterian Board of National Missions of United Presbyterian Church "U.S.A." and the Presbyterian General Assembly, both in New York City. He retired as executive of the Synod of the South in Atlanta.

After retiring he held six interim pastorates in Tennessee, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

He received a doctor of divinity degree from Tusculum College in Tennessee in 1975.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Deer Carson, whom he married April 21, 1990; a daughter, Martha Anne Hitchens of Chambersburg; two sons, Charles Andrew Carson of Mason Neck, Va., and Thomas Christian Carson of Ellenwood, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Susan Erwin of Chambersburg; a stepson, John Douglas Engstrom of Virginia; a sister, Helen Tappert of Philadelphia; nine grandchildren and six stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring, 221 N. Main St., Chambersburg. The Revs. William H. Harter, Linda B. Harter and William Murphey will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Family Life Center, Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring, 221 N. Main St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home.

Peter Misiak

SOUTH MOUNTAIN, Pa. - Peter Misiak, 80, of South Mountain Restoration Center, and formerly of Philadelphia and Norristown, Pa., died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at the center.

Born May 26, 1918, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Stanley and Catherine Wzyn Misiak.

He is survived by a sister, Helen York of Philadelphia; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Misiak.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday at Griffith Chapel at South Mountain Restoration Center. The Rev. Joseph Caroline officiated. Burial will be in Our Lady of Grace Cemetery in Pendell, Pa., on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Arrangements are by Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Gloria J. Wagaman

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Gloria Jean "Jeanie" Wagaman, 42, of 408 S. Carlisle St., died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Born Dec. 14, 1955, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of Ruby G. Welsh Wagaman of Greencastle and the late Robert C. Wagaman. She lived her early life in Five Forks, Pa.

From 1983 to 1989, she managed Carsons Motel, Chambersburg, Pa. She was employed as a desk clerk by Econolodge in Greencastle from 1989 until the present.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, John D. Stoner; one son, John D. Wagaman of Mercersburg, Pa.; a number of foster sons; three sisters, Wanda K. Wagaman and Dianne E. Henning, both of Waynesboro, and Kathy L. Bumbaugh of Chambersburg; one niece; one nephew; and cousins.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Menno Sollenberger will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, near Quincy, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Jack G. Handshaw Sr.

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Jack G. Handshaw Sr., 64, of 328 W. Main St., died Friday, July 17, 1998, at his home.

Born Nov. 7, 1933, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel and Catherine Gilbert Handshaw.

He retired in 1990 from Shively Motors, Chambersburg, where he had been employed as a salesman for 15 years. Prior to that, he had been employed by J.C. Penney and Sears, both in Chambersburg.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and served with the U.S. Army. He received the Purple Heart.

He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Fayetteville.

He was a member of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Chambersburg, and Chambersburg Club.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Brown Handshaw, whom he married on Jan. 14, 1955; one son, Jack G. Handshaw Jr. of Fairfield, Pa.; one sister, Jane Atherholt of Waynesboro, Pa.; and stepmother, Ruth Handshaw of Waynesboro, Pa.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Julia Barkdoll; and maternal grandmother, who raised him, Grace G. Nute.

A memorial service will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Richard B. Cartwright will officiate. Burial will be private.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 225 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Mark W. Wagaman

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Mark W. Wagaman, 66, of 6575 Backlane, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at his home.

Born Nov. 9, 1931, on Manheim Road, Quincy Township, Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late William H. and M. Ruth Baker Wagaman. He lived all of his life in Quincy Township.

He was a graduate of Quincy High School.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War.

He was employed by ACME Markets in Waynesboro as a meat cutter. He then worked at Superthrift in Waynesboro and Thurmont, Md. He retired in 1995.

He was a member of Grace Brethren Church, Waynesboro.

He was a member of Eagles Club Inc., where he served as vice president; Order of the Owls Nest 1073; Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, both of Waynesboro; Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 842, Chambersburg, Pa.; and National AARP.

He enjoyed coaching Little League and Pony League baseball from 1960 to 1970.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth E. Keckler Wagaman, whom he married on Aug. 24, 1953; three  daughters, Catherine M. Katavich of Gilroy, Calif., Connie J. Geesaman and Laurie A. Wagaman, both of Waynesboro; one son, Edward E. Wagaman of Vienna, Va.; three sisters, Esther Christman, Helen Shetler and Eva Sweeney, all of Mont Alto, Pa.; one brother, Glen Wagaman of Chambersburg; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Wagaman and Floyd Wagaman; two infant brothers; and one infant sister.

Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Roger K. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, near Quincy.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Leslie E. Sandiland

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Leslie E. "Les" Sandiland, 46, of 867 Blueberry Lane, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at his home.

Born Oct. 24, 1951, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of Leslie E. Sandiland Sr. of Fenelon Falls, Ontario, and the late Irene O'Brien Sandiland.

He was employed as a parts manager by Ingersoll-Rand in Shippensburg, Pa.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Chambersburg.

In addition to his  Father, he is survived by his wife, Diane Rogers Sandiland, whom he married on April 22, 1972; one daughter, Crystal A. Sandiland, at home; one son, James E. Sandiland, at home; one sister, Wanda I. Sandiland of Toronto; and one brother, Allen E. Sandiland of Edmonton, Ontario.

A memorial service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 58 S. Second St., Chambersburg. The Rev. Richard A. Randall will officiate. Burial will be private.

There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Charles A. Eberly

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Charles A. Eberly, 72, of 5849 Mountain Road, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Dec. 31, 1925, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Esther Eberly Fleagle.

He was a self-employed trucker having worked for Chicago Express, Daily Express and George Transfer, where he had been employed as a terminal agent for 17 years. After retiring from George Transfer, he and his wife operated Mountainside Crafts out of their home.

He was a member of Mount Olivet United Brethren Church, Chambersburg.

He bowled with various leagues in the Chambersburg area for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Friese Eberly, whom he married on Sept. 30, 1944; two  daughters, Raina E. Eberly of St. Paul, Minn., and Regina K. Brindle of Chambersburg; one son, Roger L. Eberly of Chambersburg; one half sister, Della Claar of Chambersburg; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one stepfather, Clarence Fleagle.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Stan V. McCammon will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

There will be no viewing; however, the family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to Mount Olivet United Brethren Church, Building Fund, 8205 Fort McCord Road, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Phyllis I. Faust

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Phyllis I. Faust, 68, of 2060 Edgar Ave., died Saturday, July 18, 1998, of multiple myeloma at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.

Born June 16, 1930, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Edward Lee Rice and Ruth Dearing Rice Brandenburg.

She attended Martinsburg High School.

She retired from Fairchild Aircraft around 1960 after 11 years of service. She then worked for the federal government at Letterkenny Army Depot. She served 10 years in the ammunition surveillance division and the rest of her 32-year tenure as a production controller at the District TMDE, a tenant activity for the 4-star U.S. Army Material Command based in Huntsville, Ala. She helped to support five mobile teams, eight TMDE support centers, area calibration labs and internal calibration labs. In 1993, she became the first woman to receive the Commander's Award in the TMDE Support Center.

She was a longtime member of the Church of the Brethren, where she was a Sunday school teacher and Cradle Roll director.

She is survived by her husband, Robert E. Faust; two  daughters, Debra Stouffer and Robin Faust-Hambright, both of Chambersburg; two sisters, Daisy P. Hite of Martinsburg and Donna E. Payne of Napa, Calif.; two brothers, Harry C. Rice of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Thomas D. Rice of Martinsburg; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Gloria Jean Rice.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Church of the Brethren, 260 S. Fourth St., Chambersburg. The Rev. Kenneth Gibble and the Rev. Donald Fogelsanger will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service Wednesday.

A light lunch will be served at the church following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Church of the Brethren, 260 S. Fourth St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
